Topics covered include random walk, percolation, self-avoiding walk, interacting particle systems, uniform spanning tree, random graphs, as well as the Ising, Potts, and random-cluster models for ferromagnetism, and the Lorentz model for motion in a random medium. Schramm–Lowner¨ evolutions (SLE) arise in various contexts. The choice of topics is strongly motivated by modern applications and focuses on areas that merit further research. Special features include a simple account of Smirnov’s proof of Cardy’s formula for critical percolation, and a fairly full account of the theory of influence and sharp-thresholds. Pickel Let F(G) denote the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of the group G . Two groups G and H are said to have the same finite quotients if F(G) = T(H) . We construct infinitely many nonisomorphic finitely presented metabelian groups with the same finite quotients, using modules over a suitably chosen ring. These groups also give an example of infinitely many nonisomorphic split extensions of a fixed finitely presented metabelian. group by a fixed finite abelian group, all having the same finite quotients. Let F(G) denote the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of the group G . We say groups G and H have the same finite quotients if F(G) = F(fl) . Many examples have been given of nonisomorphic groups with the same finite quotients ([77], [5H, [4], [9], [72]). In each of these examples the groups are polycyclic and the number of nonisomorphic groups with the same finite quotients is finite. In fact, it has been shown ([70]) that for the class of nilpotent-by-finite groups, the number of isomorphism classes of groups with the same finite quotients must always be finite. In this paper, we construct infinitely many nonisomorphic finitely presented metabelian groups with the same finite quotients. Since metabelian groups are residually finite ([7]) and satisfy the maximal condition for normal subgroups ([6]), it seems that rather stringent conditions must hold in order that the number of groups with the same finite quotients be finite. -

CORNELL UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS ANNUAL REPORT 2005–2006 The Department of Mathematics at Cornell University is known throughout the world for its distinguished faculty and stimulating mathematical atmosphere. Close to 40 tenured and tenure-track faculty represent a broad spectrum of current mathematical research, with a lively group of postdoctoral fellows and frequent research and teaching visitors. The graduate program includes over 70 graduate students from many different countries. The undergraduate program includes several math major programs, and the department offers a wide selection of courses for all types of users of mathematics. A private endowed university and the federal land-grant institution of New York State, Cornell is a member of the Ivy League and a partner of the State University of New York. There are approximately 19,500 students at Cornell’s Ithaca campus enrolled in seven undergraduate units and four graduate and professional units. Nearly 14,000 of those students are undergraduates, and most of those take at least one math course during their time at Cornell. The Mathematics Department is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, a community of 6,000 students and faculty in 50 departments and programs, encompassing the humanities, sciences, mathematics, fine arts, and social sciences. We are located in Malott Hall, in the center of the Cornell campus, atop a hill between two spectacular gorges that run down to Cayuga Lake in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State. Mothers in Science
The aim of this book is to illustrate, graphically, that it is perfectly possible to combine a successful and fulfilling career in research science with motherhood, and that there are no rules about how to do this. On each page you will find a timeline showing on one side, the career path of a research group leader in academic science, and on the other side, important events in her family life. Each contributor has also provided a brief text about their research and about how they have combined their career and family commitments. The certificate of incorporation of the Institute was signed on the 20th day of May, 1930. The first academic appointments, naming Albert Einstein and Oswald Veblen as Professors at the Institute, were approved two and one- half years later, in initiation of academic work. The Institute for Advanced Study is devoted to the encouragement, support and patronage of learning—of science, in the old, broad, undifferentiated sense of the word. The Institute partakes of the character both of a university and of a research institute j but it also differs in significant ways from both. It is unlike a university, for instance, in its small size—its academic membership at any one time numbers only a little over a hundred. It is unlike a university in that it has no formal curriculum, no scheduled courses of instruction, no commitment that all branches of learning be rep- resented in its faculty and members. It is unlike a research institute in that its purposes are broader, that it supports many separate fields of study, that, with one exception, it maintains no laboratories; and above all in that it welcomes temporary members, whose intellectual development and growth are one of its principal purposes. -

Fraenkel Abstract So far the game of Domineering has mainly been investigated by combinatorial-games re- searchers. Yet, it is a genuine two-player zero-sum game with perfect information, of which the general formulation is a topic of AI research. In that domain, many techniques have been developed for two-person games, especially for chess. In this article we show that one such technique, i.e., transposition tables, is ÿt for solving standard Domineering (i.e., on an 8×8 board). The game turns out to be a win for the player ÿrst to move. This result coincides with a result obtained independently by Morita Kazuro. Moreover, the technique of transposition tables is also applied to di erently sized m × n boards, m ranging from 2 to 8, and n from m to 9. The results are given in tabular form.
