Press Release Curators’ Series #5. Bouvard and Pécuchet's Compendious Quest for Beauty. Exhibition dates: 05.04.12 – 09.06.12 Opening Reception: 04.04.2012 from 6.30 pm Mark Manders. Figure with Book and Fake Dictionaries 2009. David Roberts Collection, London Chris Sharp and Simone Menegoi are the fifth guest curators invited by D.R.A.F. to be part of the Curators' Series. The title for the exhibition is taken from Gustave Flaubert's last, unfinished novel where two Parisian copyists Bouvard and Pécuchet meet, become dear friends, and stoke each other's curiosity to know the world and its rational, post- Enlightenment ways better. They become autodidacts of a dozen different orders, teaching themselves everything from agriculture to medicine. However, despite their best intellectual intentions, any application of the often contradictory knowledge they recklessly accumulate almost always results in confusion, failure or disaster. Yet success is not entirely elusive. One moment a given principle works, whereas in the next it doesn’t. This in turn leads them to continually cry in vain, Où est la règle? (Where is the rule?), as if the clarity and understanding of the supposedly knowable world promised by the Age of Reason were but a farce. In a time when any one individual can access and amass vast and even arcane stores of information, Flaubert's hapless antiheroes seem to be both prescient harbingers and symbols of our era. Their headlong approach can also be said to implicitly describe a good portion of what takes place in contemporary art today, in which we are faced with an obscure and at times questionable expertise on a bewildering multiplicity of subjects.

Maccarone Is Pleased to Announce an Exhibition of New Works by Eli Hansen
Maccarone is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Eli Hansen. Displaying a laboratory of hand-blown glass, CFL and LED light bulbs, plastic and chopped wood locally sourced from the artist's surroundings in Upstate New York, Hansen crafts a narrative of regionalism, subterranean laboratories, the idiosyncrasy of hand and the spectral presence of a storyteller. These ethereal components congregate in the dimly lit gallery space, simulating an environment of codependence. In the penumbral light exists the murky sensation that a protagonist has been there, abandoning the audience to contemplate who will stop the chemistry set from bubbling over, or pick up the shards of a shattered beaker. In both wall pieces and freestanding sculpture, irregularities emerge from glass blown so precisely it could be mistaken as mass- produced. Hansen effectively abstracts the ready-made; though functional, it is in the surfaces' subtle warps that the hand of the artist is revealed. The objects' inconsistencies force the viewer to reconsider Hansen's process, submitting to an immersive experience where the irregularities seem as confident and unhinged as a hallucinatory vision. Coupled with rough-hewn objects of refuse, Hansen seeks to complicate the division between the clean and the gritty. From found objects and scrap bits emerges an aesthetic of need. The do-it- yourself ethos underscores the artist's commitment to the handmade and a vernacular of the basement laboratory. Hansen's tables of scavenged wood form a stage upon which interloped glass characters tell us a story. Proof of the human comes into play with the vessels' anthropomorphic forms replete with cinched waits, potbellies and slender necks.

Oscar Tuazon's
Oscar Tuazon’s (b. 1975 in Seattle) expansive constructions engage with both exterior and interior spaces; they enter into a dialogue with existing architecture, burst its structures, and create new spaces—visible as well as invisible. His work focuses on, among other things, the subject of physical labor and the developmental process involved in an artwork. This is immediately apparent in his pieces that range between sculpture and architecture, as well as in his choice of materials— oftentimes wood, metal, stone, and concrete. Tuazon’s works combine concepts of Land Art with the principles of Minimalism and post- Minimalism and as such link the conception of something abstract with an actual construction; this is marked by extreme physical challenges in the installation phase as well as by continually shifting spatial conditions. The presentation of Oscar Tuazon’s work in the Museum Ludwig is not being shown in the exhibition spaces but, rather, extends throughout the museum’s entire main staircase. On all four levels, visitors will encounter architectural components of a private residence; on the basement level the lower staircase landing is extended into a type of garage door, an intervention that was realized for the new presentation of the collection Not Yet Titled and now announces the current exhibition. The architectural fragments distributed throughout the staircase represent a counter-argument to the existing museum architecture: private and public, institutional space are contrasted with one another and engage in a direct dialogue. As part of his artistic practice Tuazon investigates the history of art since the late 1960s. The content of his art builds on the work of artists such as Carl Andre, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, and Gordon Matta-Clark, and newly situates the discourse on space, material, and labor in contemporary art.

Jack Robins Abstract Through a series of large-scale installations, this project has sought to challenge and reactivate the established logic and institution of the gallery. The installations consisted of constructed interventions comprising abstracted spatial conventions. Focussing on physical aspects of specific gallery spaces, the works aimed to provoke audience members to reassess their physical and psychological positions in relation to the use, history and context of gallery situations. The interrogation of diverse gallery spaces then determined a series of liminal environments in which autonomous sculptural objects and installations were made to exist in dialogue. The project built upon the historical legacy of Minimalism, and took up strategies drawn from the Conceptual Art movement, specifically the work of Sol Lewitt, Bruce Nauman and Michael Asher.

Rat Hole Gallery Is Pleased to Present Sex Booze Weed Speed, a Two
Rat Hole Gallery is pleased to present Sex Booze Weed Speed, a two-person show of works by Oscar Tuazon and Gardar Eide Einarsson on view from December 17, 2010 until February 20, 2011. For this exhibition, the artists will create a site-specific installation conceived specially for the gallery space. Tuazon (American, b.1975, lives and works in Paris) creates large-scale sculptures and installations that investigate the physical space and contain references to and elements of Minimalist sensibilities, do-it-yourself aesthetics, and formal architectural practices. His work is often characterized by a sense of tension and aggressiveness that challenges the traditional notions of architecture but also possesses a sense of adaptability that leverages his fascination with alternative architectural movements and improvised usage of building materials such as cement, wood, glass and metal. Much of the materials he uses in his work are scrap or salvage he scavenges himself, which the artist then transforms into a work having an elegant simplicity and raw beauty that reverberates with the physical space around it. Underlying a distrust of architectural orthodoxy is a deep insight to the discipline and a distinct perspective of the visual language of structure, line, and form. For this exhibition at Rat Hole Gallery, Tuazon will work on-site to create sculptural works that push the physical boundaries of the exhibition space. Einarsson (Norwegian, b.1976, lives and works in Oslo, New York, and Tokyo) is known for his minimalist black and white works, often large format paintings, photographs or sculptures, that address themes of authority, order, disorder, crime, and other references to a “control society.” Many of his works are based on pre-existing images, which the artist discovers in a variety of ways, such as through obscure Internet sites, administrative questionnaires, bumper stickers, comics, underground publications, and the book covers of alternative literature whose design takes after post-war abstract painting.

Taking their titles from the various materials employed to make each of the sculptures, Tuazon seeks to underline a matter-of-factness with his most recent sculptures while also maintaining a certain sense of reciprocity. The sculptures are defined by their mutual dependence or interaction with other objects in order to assume their meaning or function. They're fragments or components that are simultaneously complete and incomplete; sculptures that assume some tasks; objects that have some work to do. Each of the objects, while apparently a complete, formally resolved object – a thing fulfilling its role as a sculpture – inflect at the same time towards the mundane, the functional, the human. Ariana Reines & Oscar Tuazon PUBIC SPACE 25 February – 9 April 2016 Modern Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new sculptures made in collaboration between poet Ariana Reines and sculptor Oscar Tuazon. The exhibition comprises new works inspired by herms: sculptural forms of ancient Greek origin that are publicly sited, with a head and sometimes a torso atop a plain pillar with genitals. Ariana Reines is a poet and playwright who lives and works in New York, NY, USA. She was born in Salem, MA, USA in 1980. She earned a BA from Barnard College, New York, NY, USA, and completed graduate work at Columbia University New York, NY, USA, and the European Graduate School, Leuk-Stadt, Switzerland, where she studied French literature, performance and philosophy. She has taught at Columbia University, the European Graduate School, NYU, Tufts, and The New School. In 2009 she was the Roberta C. Holloway Lecturer in Poetry at the University of California-Berkeley, CA, USA. Reines’ books include The Cow (2006); Coeur de Lion (2007); Mercury (2011); The Origin of the World (2014) and A Sand Book (2016).
