Grade 8 Reach Ahead Program

“Discovering the Workplace”

March 1, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians of Students entering Grade 9:

We are excited to once again offer a unique summer program to help students currently in Grade 8 to transition to Secondary School. This program is a high school credit course titled, “Discovering the Workplace” (course code GLD2O), and will focus on present and future opportunities in the workplace and careers. It is designed to reinforce literacy and numeracy skills with an intentional link to trades and technology. Field trips to local businesses and/or college/university/trade centres will be available.

Your child’s homeroom teacher has recognized your child as someone who may benefit from attending this summer school course. Bussing will be provided on a per needs basis, but it will not be door-to-door service. A bus schedule will be sent to each student in June.

Dates: Wednesday, July 4 to Friday, July 27, 2018 Time: 8:45 a.m. to 3:33 p.m.

Program Locations:  Aurora High School  Richmond Green Secondary School  Keswick High School  Stephen Lewis Secondary School  Markham District High School  Tommy Douglas Secondary School  Milliken Mills High School  Vaughan Secondary School  Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School

Note: Each secondary site is limited to 44 participants.

Students who are successful in this summer course will receive a credit for high school. Students must be committed to achieving their best, modeling good behaviour and attending for the entire length of the program.

Please note that International students (students from other countries attending YRDSB schools) are required to pay a fee. Please contact Continuing Education Services to make payment arrangements in order to attend.

If you support your child’s teacher’s recommendation to attend this summer program, please complete the registration process on-line using Career Cruising. Space is limited; registration deadline is June 8, 2018. Registration will be accepted on a first come-first served basis.

If you do not have a computer at home, please speak with your school’s Principal to arrange a time for your child to register on-line at school.

If you have any questions, please contact 905-884-3434 or 1-877-280-8180 or [email protected]
