To the Jews then, accepting the Torah on Har Sinai was even greater than their redemption from slavery. So we count each day to bring ourselves to that sense of great enthusiasm, as if to say, “When will that day come?” With these words the Sefer HaChinuch

How could anything in the world be more desirable to the Jews than freedom?

defines the mitzvah of S’firas HaOmer. The difficulty with this is the statement that “to the Jews then, receiving of the Torah was even greater than being freed from slavery.” It seems hard to imagine that anything would be greater to a slave than being freed. This concept is even more perplex- ing when we envision what it was like to be a slave in Mitzrayim.

A Life Of Suffering And Bloodshed The life of a Jew in Mitzrayim was one of misery and suffering. They had no rights. They had no life. They couldn’t own property, choose their own destiny, or protect their own children. They didn’t even have the right to their own time. A Mitzri could at any moment demand a Jew’s utter and complete compliance to do his bidding. If a Jew walked in the streets, it was every Mitzri’s right to whisk him away, without question and without recourse, and force him into slave labor for whatever he saw fit.

Born and bred in Kew Gardens Hills, R’ Benzion Shafier joined the Choftez Chaim Yeshiva after high school. Short- ly thereafter he got married and moved with his new family to Rochester, where he remained in for 12 years. R’ Shafier then moved to Monsey, NY, where he was a Rebbe in the new Chofetz Chaim branch there for three years. Upon the Rosh Yeshiva’s request, he stopped teaching to devote his time to running Tiferes Bnei Torah. R” Shafier, a happily married father of six children, currently resides in Monsey.

First he blamed Israel for the failure of negotiations by using “poof” to describe how an ill-conceived, pie-in- the-sky peace plan fell apart. Second, he used the anathema “apartheid” word to condemn Israel. Secretary of State Kerry is however only one of Israel’s problems. Israel’s main problem is Mahmoud Abbas and his continuous shenanigans. He has acted, as many had predicted, as Yasser Arafat with an Yves St. Laurent tie and a Brooks Brothers suit. Peace is furthest from his mind and recognition of Israel as a Jewish State is even further from his mind. His recognition of the Holocaust as a “heinous crime,” despite his PhD thesis minimizing the degree of how heinous a crime it was, fits well with his Machiavellian, conniving, and devilish ways. He knows well how to behave like a diplomat when the time calls for it, but this hides his more sinister and overarch- ing evil self. People forget he was Arafat’s second in command. The world forgets he financed all of Arafat’s terrorist ac- tions, including the Munich Massacre. He was the “brains” behind Arafat. He has played America like an easy fiddle, raising hundreds of millions of dollars of American taxpayer money to finance his own lavish lifestyle and continued terror- ism.
