News & Notes:

THE ALL-ELECTRIC ALL-PERFORMANCE SALEEN FOURSIXTEEN Enhancing the performance, technology, and design of the Tesla Model S Saleen Automotive Inc. Monterey, CA – (August 17, 2014): From the same automotive performance brand that brought the true American Supercar, the S7, Saleen has once again set prece- dence for a vehicle of epic proportions. The Tesla Model S based Saleen FOURSIXTEEN performance electric car was shown for the first time at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. “Tesla has created an entirely new class of American automobile”, explained Steve Saleen. “There are many similarities to this and how Ford created the ‘pony car’ class in 1964 with the Mustang, which is how these vehicles stand out from the rest of the pack.” Standing out from the pack is Saleen’s specialty. Whether it’s their winning racing pedigree, expertly engineered Saleen vehicles, or instantly recognizable design. The Saleen legacy is perfectly packaged into the FOURSIXTEEN Model S and hinges on the mantra for the performance luxury electric car that ‘status quo won’t do’. Purposefully advanced design: From the outside, the FOURSIXTEEN is a harmonious blend of aerodynamic aggressiveness and subtle classiness. Applying the same championship Saleen DNA used over the last three decades, Saleen has created a car that can drive the streets of Monaco and set records at Laguna Seca. From the Saleen crafted front fascia to the carbon fiber rear diffuser, the FOURSIXTEEN aerodynamic design is as inspired as it is functional. Front aero management vents helps ensure that the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN model maintains a low pressure field as air acceleration increases around the chassis. Assisting the lower aero management is the unique V-shaped hood architecture efficiently directing hot air away from the drivetrain cooling system all while generating valuable downforce across the front section. The rear fascia design finalizes the aerodynamic system as air moves across the cabin and onto the Saleen designed high-downforce decklid mounted spoiler. Mid-chassis air is directed across the carbon fiber accents stretching between the taillights. Supplying rear wake diffusion is a Saleen diffuser design that boosts aerodynamic downforce capability. Electrified Performance: Just like the rest of the Saleen lineup, this car is more than just an eye catching aerodynamic package. Propelling the new FOURSIXTEEN is the 3-phase, four pole AC induction motor and copper rotor with the upgraded Saleen drivetrain including an all-new 11.39:1 final gear ratio for quicker acceleration. Also new for the FOURSIXTEEN is a Saleen specific MAX- GRIP™ locking differential that allows each wheel to efficiently apply rotational force and maximize traction and grip in performance environments. All of the Saleen engineered driveline components increase efficiencies in torque management, give a track capable throttle response, and provide faster acceleration. Overall the FOURSIXTEEN is a well-balanced vehicle and sounds great too! Electric motor cooling has also been made more productive from the Saleen high-efficiency drivetrain cooling system. Comprising the system is a larger volume radiator, upsampled cooling fans, and a high-flow water pump to help maintain consistent temperatures in more stressful performance applications. “Electric drivetrains are unique in that they can generate an incredible amount of torque at zero RPM”, detailed Sven Etzelsberger, VP Advanced Engineering. “Our challenge was really to find methods to manage the energy that is generated by the electric motor and rotor assembly. With the FOURSIXTEEN we have successfully found a comprehensive solution to increase performance and harness (Continued on page 4)

(Continued from page 3, THE ALL-ELECTRIC ALL-PERFORMANCE SALEEN FOURSIXTEEN) power in an efficient manner.” Suspension: Saleen’s design and engineering teams worked together to ensure a functional suspension that doesn’t sacrifice ride quality. The Saleen specific S4 track-calibrated suspension includes a monotube coilover, which works in conjunction with an S4 sway bar setup to increase cornering agility without sacrificing ride quality. The FOURSIXTEEN suspension system can also be ordered in a fully adjustable configuration, allowing the driver to easily increase stiffness for a day at the track and revert to a more streetable setting with simple adjustments. The Stability Control System has also undergone a track tested performance enhancement. A software change gives the FOURSIX- TEEN better cornering response and drivability by allowing the driver to maintain power as traction and vehicle weight distribution change. Working together with the stability control software, wheel, tire, and S4 suspension system are the Saleen-specific brakes. The stan- dard brake package in the FOURSIXTEEN include 14” 2-piece aluminum hat vented rotors and multi-piston front calipers with per- formance brake pads. An optional upgrade is the carbon ceramic disc brake system for maximum braking, cooling, and weight reduc- tion. Saleen designed wheels fill out the wheel openings and add an air of performance luxury. All of this combined with the ZR-spec tires make sure the car will hug the corners, accelerate true in the straights, and stop effortlessly when needed. Supercar inspired interior: The interior refinements of the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN are abundant. From the handpicked leather pal- ette to the carbon fiber dash accents, the cabin environment is as supercar stylish as it is functionally chic. Starting with the seating, black leather is contrasted by perforated leather accents and Alcantara suede inlays providing a true luxury atmosphere. “Our theme of an electric four-seat supercar really comes to life with the interior of this car”, said Sean Smith, Design Director. “Our design team spent a lot of time evaluating different materials, fitments, and finishes to accomplish the refined interior design of the FOURSIXTEEN while still keeping the modern inspiration intact. I think the result is appropriate for this new class of electric American performance cars.” A new center console has also been integrated into the interior redesign. This functional aspect gives the driver and front passenger additional center storage, a personal electronic device pocket, and a much needed cupholder all within arm’s reach. Continuing the track-inspired exterior enhancements, the front and rear seating have been remolded to produce four full bucket seats complete with added bolstering to create a discerning interior that is fittingly built around the driver and passengers. Marrying the seat- ing design to the rest of the cockpit are the Saleen tailor-made door panels and a full leather-wrapped dash both artistically compli- mented with hand sewn contrast stitching. The final stroke of interior craftsmanship draws attention to the seat shells which have been color matched to the black leather, creating a dynamic modern feel in the rear cabin. Availability, Pricing and Additional Information: MSRP for the FOURSIXTEEN model is set to start at $152,000 for the complete vehicle, which includes the base P85Model S sedan. This is priced before existing state and federal EV incentives which can range from $7,500 to $15,000 depending on the buyers state (i.e. A California resident would pay $142,000.00). Warranties are also included on all new Saleen vehicles, components, and labor. Each newly purchased Saleen FOURSIXTEEN will include a 4-year / 50,000 mile warranty to match the manufacturer backed limited warranty. Purchases for this all new electric vehicle can be placed by contacting Saleen directly for an expedited ordering process of the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN. Orders are now being taken for the FOURSIXTEEN with delivery 6-8 weeks following order confirmation and receipt. Alternatively, individual FOURSIXTEEN components are also available for Model S owners that are looking to just add a touch of per- formance or styling to their current vehicle without the desire for a serialized version. Installation can be scheduled through the Saleen Performance Parts division. For more information visit www.saleen.com Check out this XCAR video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWdatUMNmTI Editor’s Note after a ride in the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN: I had a ride that Disney couldn't replicate! The acceleration was amazing, and even more of a surprise was the short breaking distance from 75 mph to zero in a very short distance to the stop light!!! It was exhilarating and sounds like it is from a futuristic movie! It is definitely unlike anything else on 4 wheels.

What is Downforce? Understanding the physics behind wings and spoilers. Text & photo from Saleen Media One of the most visually recognizable modifications that distin- guishes a performance vehicle is the wing or spoiler. Both offer the advantage of more downforce applied to the vehicle at speed. The problem with going fast in modern cars is that as you increase speed, the vehicle begins to create lift, similar to a wing on a plane. That is bad when you are looking for traction. Wings and spoilers help to create downforce, or reverse lift, on the vehicle. When the vehicle is being driven at speed, this helps plant the vehicle to the road or track. The main difference between wings and spoilers is how they mount to the vehicle. A wing uses two vertical uprights to mount to the rear of the car. This leaves a small gap for air to pass under. A spoiler sits entirely on the trunk lid, with no gap underneath. Spoilers are named such due to the way they disturb, or spoil, the smooth airflow over the car. Smooth airflow is bad because it reduces weight in the back of the vehicle, in essence lessening much needed traction.

Prairieland National Show Text by Betsy Beyer Photos by Betsy and Rudy Beyer The Central Illinois Mustangers hosted the Prairieland Roundup National Mustang Show on May 23-25, 2014 in Springfield, Illinois. The Crowne Plaza Hotel has become the club's favorite venue for their National Shows. The club members as well as the hotel staff were very well organized. Registration, parking, judging, banquet, and awards presentation all went very smoothly. Chuck Brenner, show chairperson, even announced that their committee arranged for perfect weather! Rudy and Betsy Beyer attended the show with their 1997 S351 #97-14. It is in the Conservator's Class which was achieved by attend- ing shows and acquiring points to receive a Blue Grill Medallion. In the Conservator's Class cars no longer have to go through full MCA judging. The cars get checked to see that they have been maintained in the superb condition that got the car into the Conserva- tor's Class. Saleen S351 #97-14 has received 10 Conservator Awards and qualified for the MCA's Conservator d’Elegance Trophy and White Grill Medallion. At this time that is the highest award in the MCA judging. The car will continue to be displayed in the Con- servator's Class at National MCA Shows. Thirty-seven cars in the Conservator's Class were at the Springfield Show. Five other Saleens were registered in the Show and one came to the show on Sunday only. Going through the MCA judging encour- ages owners to clean the car way beyond the regular exterior wash, interior vacuuming of carpets, and dusting the dash. The meticulous care of the car certainly enhances the value of the cars. If you don't choose to pamper your Saleen in this way, the car can attend the MCA shows in the Display Class.

SALEEN ALLEY Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Races and Car Shows: July 19&20, 2014 Text & Photos by Betsy Beyer Schenley Park is the scene of our nation’s largest vintage race event. 150 vintage racers gather here each July to test their skills and entertain the crowd. The PVGP races through Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania are considered by many drivers to be the most challenging race course worldwide. The 2.33 mile circuit has 23 turns; not to mention hay bales, manhole covers, phone poles, and stone walls. The Grand Prix in Schenley Park is the only vintage race event that is run on actual city streets – made possible by our Pit Crew of 1,000 vol- unteers. The best place to watch the races is from the 456 acre Bob O’Connor Golf Course where the Grand Prix stages an Interna- tional Car Show with over 2,000 vehicles on display. These car shows are mainly supported by local car clubs but are also open to the public for only $30 for the weekend. In addition to the car shows there are dozens of sponsor tents, a village full of ven- dors, and plenty of food and refreshment vendors. 200,000 spectators filled Schenley Park to see the show cars and to watch the races. There was no cost for spectators to enter, but donations were encouraged. Proceeds from the event benefit the Allegheny Valley School and the Autism Society of Pitts- burgh. www.pvgp.org Mustangs and Saleens participated in the International Car Show held on the Schenley Park Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 & 20. Saleen Club of America Saleen Nationals Text & photos by Betsy Beyer The 11th Annual Saleen Club of America Saleen Nationals was held on August 2, 2014 in Uniondale, Long Island, New York. The host hotel was the Red Roof Inn, Uniondale, NY. The Satur- day Car Show and dinner were held indoors at the Mitchel Ath- letic Complex about 2 miles from the Red Roof Inn. The club hosts, Saleen Club of America New York and New England Re- gional Group, held true to their motto - Fun, Friendship, and Saleens. The venue was on Long Island which made possible a few unique driving tours before the main show. On Friday, August 1 the driving tour went to Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, New York. This is the site where the 1964-1965 World's Fair was held. The Friday weather was perfect weather - sunny, dry, and mild temperatures. The return trip went by Jones Beach. All Saleen vehicles were allowed to enter the ac- tivities. A few non-Saleen vehicles also participated. The observation tower of the New York State Pavilion still re- mains near the World's Fair iconic symbol, the Unisphere. The Unisphere is a 12-story high spherical stainless steel struc- ture representing the earth. It shows the continents overlaid on the spherical frame structure. The observation towers were used in the movie Men in Black. Each participant was given time to drive in front of the Unisphere and stop for photographs. The whole group was then parked for a group photo. Friday evening the group gathered at the Red Roof Inn for a Pizza Party. Saturday, August 1 started as a cool rainy morning. Over 50 vehicles arrived in the rain and were rewarded with a dry indoor arena for the show. The rain stopped before noon and the roads were dry for the vehicles to leave around 4:00, after the awards. During the show, Steve Saleen stopped by every vehicle to greet the owners and sign vehicles. Steve then had an auto- graph session during which he signed separate posters of the Saleen SA-30 and the George Follmer Heritage Saleen. The Saleen Heritage vehicles were the featured Saleen for the event. Two 2007 Parnelli Jones Saleens, #25 & #96, were parked on one side of Steve's table and on the other side was 2013 Orange County Orange Saleen 351 #001 and 1989 Saleen SSC #32. The Saturday evening dinner was held at the show site. While everyone waited for dinner to be served, Betsy Beyer displayed on the TV a scrolling view of 166 pages of a Saleen 30th Anni- versary photo album that was compiled for the Saleen Family. During dinner a Saleen video, 1984-2004 Saleen Retrospective, was played. Steve Saleen was the evening's featured speaker. He held a Q&A session during which he gave details about current prod- ucts and a few hints about future projects. Saleen is now selling vehicles in China as well as other international markets. Of spe- cial interest to the group was Steve's announcement that Saleen Automotive is working on a catalog of parts that will be avail- able. The company is working on obtaining sources for replace- ment parts for Saleens 1984-present. Many of the original parts have to be retooled and new suppliers obtained. Molly Saleen is in charge of the Retail Division of Saleen Automotive. Steve concluded his presentation with the video that was presented at the Mustang 50th Anniversary Banquet in Charlotte, North Caro- lina. Thank you to everyone for all the hospitality.

A new paved parking lot for the Pinnacle Bank Arena was the site for over 400 Mustangs and Fords. The Capitol City Ford and Mustang Club had a BIG event for their first National MCA Show. Friday was the day to prepare show cars for judging. Friday evening participants had just a one mile drive to the Smith Collection Museum of Ameri- can Speed for a cookout, tour of the museum, and the special arrival of a Pony Express Mail Carrier on a live pony to reenact the exchange of the mail to a second rider. A special delivery letter from Dave Heinemen, Governor of Nebraska, was pre- sented to Steve Pruitt, MCA President. An overnight rain meant that the show cars needed a little extra cleaning on Saturday morning, but the rest of the day the tem- perature was in the mid-80s with a nice breeze. The cars were judge with no rain delay! Three Saleens were among the entries. The Smith Collection Museum of American Speed, ( www.museumofamericanspeed.com ) has a very extensive collection of race cars, engines, pedal cars, cookie jars, lunch boxes, and more. The collection also has several buildings that aren't open to the public. From the museum's website: "Millions of hours have been spent, as Bill [Smith] puts it, 'turning over rocks' and chasing countless leads to assemble a collection of this magnitude. As a result, museum visitors can witness a stun- ning array of history-making cars, engines, parts, toys, and memorabilia. You’ll see countless rare and one-of-a-kind items, all presented in beautiful displays and dioramas that will make you feel like you’ve taken a step back into the past!" The Southeast Community College, Milford, Nebraska had an engine crew at the show. They had a disassembled engine that they assembled and started in 11minutes, 1 second. This beat their previous Build and Start record of 11 minutes, 35 seconds. 1997 Saleen S351 #14, owned by Rudy and Betsy Beyer, was at the show in the Conservator's Class. It has collected points to earn a Blue Grille Medallion that qualified it for the Conservator's Class. After attending 10 MCA National Shows in the Conserva- tor's Class, it earned the MCA's top award, a White Grille Medal- lion and a Conservator d’Elegance Trophy (sponsored by Na- tional Parts Depot). These awards were presented at this show. The cars were on display again on Sunday while some partici- pants did Auto Cross Racing. The Awards Ceremony was held in the air conditioned Pinnacle Arena.

1999 Saleen #155 Promotional Car: Pennzoil “Dream Car Garage” Contest Text and photos by Gary Ross Back in late 2001 my son Bryan and I were searching the internet for an SSC. During a search one night on E-bay I notice a very unique Saleen with decals all over it and a racing horse head down both sides. Later that night I went back to that Saleen auction. I discovered that the reserve was not meet yet, and the auction was only a three day auction. The car was located within a reasonable 4-hour drive, so I was interested! I took the VIN # down and called Saleen, Inc. to find out more about the car. I couldn’t get a hold of anyone so I left a message and my phone number. A few hours later I got a call back from Liz Summer (Saleen). She said that she had other requests about the car. The car was verified as a real Saleen. Liz told me that she remembered when the car was at the factory. Steve wanted to build a car to honor their sponsors of the race team. In 1999 Saleen made one convertible and one with all the racing decals that were on the racecars. Liz told me that Pennzoil was a major sponsor so Steve agreed to give them the coupe for their nation wide advertising contest called “Dream Car Ga- rage”. The car was taken around the country to major car events at which people entered a drawing to win the car. Pennzoil was on the 55 decals that were on both sides of the racecar so the 55 stickers were put on the doors of the Dream Car Garage car. At that point I knew I wanted the car and now had to figure out what my bid would be. I decided on my bid. I met the reserve and re- mained the highest bidder. As the 3-day auction came down to the last hour, I still had the highest bid. In the last hour I worried that I would be out bid. I told Bryan to raise my bid by $5,000 if necessary. Bryan called back in an hour and said, “You got the car! You won the auction! He said that he didn’t have to bid the extra $5,000. I stayed the high bidder. I was in seventh heaven, but then I had to figure out how to tell my wife! When I got home I was contacted by the dealer who had the car. He wanted me to give up my bid and allow him to sell the car for a higher price. I told him that I meet his reserve, and I was the high bidder when the auction closed. He wanted to contact E-bay about his obligation to sell the car to me. Awhile later the dealer called back to tell me that E-bay said that he had to honor my winning bid. The car was sitting on his lot, and he had no idea about how special the car was! Someone saw the car and told him that the Mustang was a special Saleen and gave him the number to Saleen, Inc. He then learned about the car. He told me that he has names of three people that would pay him more for the car. I told him that I wanted the car, and I would be there Friday to pick it up. He agreed and said the car would be ready. I finally had to tell my wife that I bought the car and the dealer didn’t want to honor my E-bay wining bid. My wife initially took my side and said, “He can’t do that. You were the higher bidder.” ...Then she came to her senses and said, “We don’t need another car! I don’t know where you are going to get the money?” I won the bid, told my wife, and got a loan for the 1999 Saleen “Dream Car” for my ga- rage.

SALEEN ALLEY 1999 Saleen #60, Michigan Grand Rapids Pace Car Text and photos by Gary Ross The story with the Pace car, for me started in November 2001 when I bought the Tim Allen/ Home Improvement car, 99 #155. My son Bryan and I had just left the car lot where I just bought #155, and we decided to stop to fill up the car and get something to eat before we got on the interstate and head for home. While eating a quick bite, my son Bryan started looking thru a Mustang and Ford Trader. After looking for awhile, Bryan said, “Hey Dad, do you want to buy the mate to your car? It’s for sale.” I said something like, “I just bought this car and haven’t paid it off yet. Let me see that ad.” I said that it would be nice to have a matching set, but there is no way I could afford it. I heard that the car might need a new horse decal and some paint work. I decided to pass the opportunity. Over the years we had heard rumors that the Pace Car was sold and ended up in southern Georgia. We never followed up on the location of the Pace Car. Well, fast forward to November 2011. Bryan has a Mustang business, and we try to make the major shows and swap meets. We were at the Moultrie Georgia swap meet. This was a three day show, and we were doing OK selling stuff. I need a trailer jack so as usual I checked out the parts area. I quickly went thru about ¼ of the meet and came back with a new jack. Well, Saturday ended without any memorable events. The plan for Sunday was to sell everything that we could and load up in our trailer for the next show at Daytona. Things were slow so I told Bryan and Malcolm, (Bryan’s brother in law) that they should walk around and enjoy the show. Bryan was gone less than an hour when he called me on my cell and said, “You are not going to believe what is here in the car lot! It’s the Pace Car, the mate to your car. I’ll send you a picture. You need to get over here. Just leave the parts and get over here!” Bryan and I went together to see the car. To my surprise the car was in great shape. It was not beat up like I thought it would be. It just needed some clean-up. Bryan told me that the owner a stroke and was in a wheelchair. I met the owner, and we talked about our cars. It turned out that he bought the car about the same time I bought mine. I remembered the ad that we saw at that gas station. That meant that this car was 72 miles from me for 10 years. The owner kept this car covered up most of the time. The car only had just under 6,800 miles on it. No wonder I never saw it. We made a deal, made a deposit, and made arrangements to pay for the car at the Daytona Swap Meet. I didn’t even drive the car or hear it run. On the way to Daytona, we had a lot to talk about. What would I have to move out of the garage. I was excited about how good the cars would look together and amazed that after all of those years I accidentally found the car, and it was for sale!

Saleen DownUnder Text and photos by Harry and Helen Martin, SOEC Australia The 18th Hot Rod & Street Machine Spectacular, one of the biggest indoor auto shows in Australia, drew the biggest crowds ever for this popular 3 day event on June 13-15, 2014. National adjudicators and judges dubbed it to be the best indoor show they had seen across the nation. Owners of muscle cars, hot rods, and classics who could not be part of the indoor display were given preferential outdoor parking in front of the venue. Partici- pants for the outdoor parking arrived endlessly and eventually eclipsed indoor display entrants. Saleen was represented as part of the elite, SOEC members Harry & Helen Martin indoor display. The Martins were pumped up from numerous Saleen shows stateside, including the 50th Anniversary Mustang Show at Charlotte. They were hot on their heels to pro- mote Steve and all Saleens. As all SOEC readers would know, elite shows require much effort in advertising, props, and promotion to spread the message about our Saleens.
