  • RD PRO12 Peview Round 9
RaboDirect PRO12 PREVIEW 2012/13 Round Nine: 23rd – 25th November 2012 ROUND NINE PREVIEWS With the completion of their postponed Round 4 game against Zebre, Ulster have now pulled out a six points lead at the top of the RaboDirect PRO12 table. They are in action in Italy again on Friday night when they face Benetton Treviso at Stadio Monigo, and will be looking to extend their unbeaten record in the country as well as maintaining their 100per cent start to this season’s RaboDirect PRO12. Current RaboDirect PRO12 champions, Ospreys, are also in action on Friday night travelling to Murrayfield to play Edinburgh Rugby. Ospreys sit just outside the top four due to poorer points difference than Munster, should results go their way this weekend it could be the first time they have entered the Play-Off zone this season. The match of the day must be the encounter at Scotstoun where third placed Glasgow Warriors must overcome the reigning European champions, Leinster if they are to set a new Warriors record in this tournament of seven successive wins. The final game on Friday night is in Wales when Newport Gwent Dragons host Connacht. Both teams have had a mixed start to their seasons, and a win would be a welcome boost to their campaigns. The round concludes with two games on Sunday, Munster v Scarlets and Zebre v Cardiff Blues. After having narrowly missed out to Ulster last weekend, Zebre are still looking for their first win in the completion, and will be hoping Blues poor form continues for one more week.

IRF OFF: CONNACHT’S FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL AND THE FOUNDATION MYTH OF A RUGBY IDENTITY Ruadhán Cooke & Éamon Ó Cofaigh The Connacht Rugby website describes its crest as ‘a modified version of the provincial flag consisting of a dimidiated eagle and an arm wielding a sword’. Little could Connacht have suspected that the arm wielding the sword over the province would one day be that of its own parent body. This article will retrace briefly the history of Connacht Rugby, focusing in particular on the near-death experience of the 2002/03 season. In reviewing the media coverage of a three-week window of protest which ultimately prompted the IRFU to reverse its plan to disband the professional team, this article will critically assess the legacy of the protest movement whose lasting achievements include not just the immediate survival of the franchise but its more recent successes on and off the field.1 The story of Connacht Rugby will be situated in the context of its geographic location and history of economic and social marginalisation.

  • A Word from the Headmaster
The BelvedereSummer Edition 2017 | AMDG NEWS A WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER s I write the sun is shining, students have returned from Greece and Zambia with their teachers and the exams are Ain their final phase. It is a busy time and in a sense there is no “winding down” in Belvedere as the summer schools and Theatre head into a busy summer schedule. So, the Newsletter is a welcome opportunity to look back on a year of achievement, excitement, sadness and joy. I want to thank Joanne Ryan for the tremendous work done in ensuring the Newsletter is a wonderful snapshot of many, though not all of, the activities and experiences students have engaged in. I hope it conveys the energy and enthusiasm of all those engaged in the life of the College. None of this would be possible without the generosity of spirit of the College staff who are willing to give of their time and talent to ensure that education in the broadest sense engages our students and gives them an opportunity to discover their talents. Thanks also to the wonderful support of the parents and past pupils whose energy and generosity make sure that students have such wonderful opportunities. The Board of Management, chaired by Brian Owens, faced into a year with many challenges, including national industrial action, the development of the Masterplan, which will ensure our facilities will be outstanding, and the continued development of education in the College. The appointment process for two additional Deputies was demanding and the calibre of applicants was excellent.
