Thomas Raus The boreal and centrai European element in the forest flora of Greece Abstract Raus, T.: The boreal and centraI European element in the forest flora of Greece. - Bocconea 5: 63-76. 1995. - ISSN 1120-4060. The southemmost occurrences in Greece of selected vascular plant species associated with woodlands of beech, fir and spruce in C. and N. Europe are discussed. Preliminary maps of the Greek distribution are given for Aegopodium podagraria, Allium ursinum, Corallorhiza trifida, Galium odoratum, Lamium galeobdolon, Luzula luzuloides, L. sylvatica, Milium effusum, Orthilia secunda, Paris quadrifolia, Prenanthes purpurea, and Salvia glutinosa. Introduction The land surfaee of eontinental Greeee is far from being isolated from adjaeent parts of S.E. Europe by effeetive, W.-E. orientated geomorphologieal barriers. Mountains, lowlands and N.-S. running stream valleys allow free exehange and migration of organ isms from and to non-mediterranean areas in the north. The dinarie-pindie high moun tain system, in partieular, forrns an uninterrupted eonneetion between the southern part of the Balkan peninsula and C. Europe, whieh was an important faetor during the period of postglaeial restoration of European forest vegetation (Hammen 1965, Messerli 1967, Bottema 1974, Horvat & al. 1974, Athanasiadis 1975, Pott 1992). The mediterranean type climate, however, aetually limits regional southward distribution in N. and C. Greeee for many plants whieh are widespread in c., W. and N. Europe but not adapted to pronouneed summer aridity. Montane Fagus-Abies-Picea woodlands and various types of wetland habitats are those favourable niehes in Greeee where summer draught is suffieiently eompensated by miero- and mesoclimatie effeets and where most of the "northern" elements of the Greek flora are therefore eoneentrated. -

I, no.1, 2006, pp 31-60 SETTLEMENT HISTORY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CARPATHIANS IN THE EIGHTEENTH AND NINETEENTH CENTURIES David TURNOCK* ∗ Geography Department, The University Leicester LE1 7RH, U.K. Abstract: As part of a historical study of the Carpathian ecoregion, to identify salient features of the changing human geography, this paper deals with the 18th and 19th centuries when there was a large measure political unity arising from the expansion of the Habsburg Empire. In addition to a growth of population, economic expansion - particularly in the railway age - greatly increased pressure on resources: evident through peasant colonisation of high mountain surfaces (as in the Apuseni Mountains) as well as industrial growth most evident in a number of metallurgical centres and the logging activity following the railway alignments through spruce-fir forests. Spa tourism is examined and particular reference is made to the pastoral economy of the Sibiu area nourished by long-wave transhumance until more stringent frontier controls gave rise to a measure of diversification and resettlement. Information about the scientific collections is made available more and more often. The digitisation of such resources allows us to verify their value and share these records with other scientists – and they are usually rich in taxa and unique in the world. Moreover, such information significantly enriches local and global knowledge about biodiversi- ty. The digitisation of the resources of the Zoology Research Group, University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland) allowed presenting a substantial collection of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha). The collection counts 9369 slide-mounted specimens, about 200 alcohol-preserved samples, close to 2500 dry specimens stored in glass vials and 1319 amber inclu- sions representing 343 taxa (289 identified to species level), 158 genera and 36 families (29 extant and seven extinct). -

For this purpose, the results of the measurements of special systems (ceilometers) that monitor the atmospheric boundary layer were used in the analysis. Meteorological conditions, including the mixing layer height (MLH), undoubtedly influence the air pollution level. Combinations of meteorological conditions and their influence on PM10 concentrations also vary, depending on the pollution sources of a certain area and the geographical conditions of the monitoring site. Gen1erally, the worst dispersion conditions for the PM10 air pollution level occur at low air temperatures, low wind speed, and low height of the mixing layer along with a wind direction from areas with a higher accumulation of pollution sources. The average PM10 concentrations at temperatures below 1 ◦C reach the highest values on the occurrence of a mixing layer height of up to 400 m at both sites. The influence of a rising height of the mixing layer at temperatures below 1 ◦C on the average PM10 concentrations at Tˇrinec-Kosmos site is not as significant as in the case of Vˇeˇrˇnovice,where a difference of several tens of µg m 3 in the average PM · − 10 concentrations was observed between levels of up to 200 m and levels of 200–300 m. -

Threats to Australia’s grazing industries by garden plants Abstract This report identifies 281 introduced garden plants and 800 lower priority species that present a significant risk to Australia’s grazing industries should they naturalise. Of the 281 species: • Nearly all have been recorded overseas as agricultural or environmental weeds (or both); • More than one tenth (11%) have been recorded as noxious weeds overseas; • At least one third (33%) are toxic and may harm or even kill livestock; • Almost all have been commercially available in Australia in the last 20 years; • Over two thirds (70%) were still available from Australian nurseries in 2004; • Over two thirds (72%) are not currently recognised as weeds under either State or Commonwealth legislation. -

Pizzolato Abstract The genus Biselachista Traugott-Olsen & Nielsen, 1977, with a Holarctic diffusion and represented in Europe by seventeen species living in various environments, from sea level to 2000 metres in the Alps, is considered a valid genus. The biology of some species is well known thanks to laboratory rearings. Their host plants and parasites are reported. The pre-imaginal stages and the male and female genitalia are illustrated. The currently ascertained distribution is given. The examination of the type material permitted to ascertain the following synonymies: Biselachista occidentalis (Frey, 1882) is a synonym of Biselachista juliensis (Frey, 1870); Elachista saarelai Kaila & Sippola, 2010 is a synonym of Biselachista kebneella Traugott-Olsen & Nielsen, 1977.
