PROGRAM NOTES Chameleon Arts Ensemble of Boston Deborah Boldin, Artistic Director 2020-2021 chamber music season rewind 1: remembering joy Saturday, November 14 through Saturday, November 21, 2020 Program: Francis Poulenc, Sextet in C Major for piano & winds, FP 100 Felix Mendelssohn, Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 Program notes by Gabriel Langfur Rice Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) came from a wealthy Parisian family of pharmaceutical manufacturers. His mother was an excellent pianist, and he began learning to play under her instruction at age 5. Her brother, known affectionately as “Oncle Papoum,” introduced him to Parisian theatrical life, and by the age of 14 he was sophisticated enough to be fully aware of the revolutionary consequences of the première of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Poulenc had little formal compositional training until he began study with Koechlin in 1921, working with him for four years to master the art of counterpoint. He was a member of the loosely confederated group of composers known as Les Six (Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Germaine Taillefere and Louis Durey), who placed themselves in opposition to both Germanic influence and the “vagueness” of impressionism. Erik Satie was their adopted guru, and none of the group more than Poulenc embraced Satie’s belief in the value of cheerful wit – and even downright silliness – in concert music. A re-adoption of his Catholic faith in 1935 turned his attention towards sacred music, and any questions by the musical establishment of the seriousness of his compositional intent were ended. From 1945 until his sudden death in 1963 from a heart attack, Poulenc split his time between Paris and his spacious country house, Le Grand Coteau, in the village of Noizay in Touraine, where he had to fend off attempts by the villagers to make him mayor.

  • Francis Poulenc, Born in January 1899 in Paris
AN ANALYSIS OF FRANCIS POULENC’S SEXTUOR FIRST MOVEMENT A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTERS OF MUSIC IN PIANO CHAMBER MUSIC/ACCOMPANYING BY MALORIE DANIELLE JESSUP DR. RAY KILBURN- ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSTIY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2009 1 Francis Poulenc was an early twentieth-century French pianist and composer. Throughout his lifetime, Poulenc wrote for many different ensembles, including ballet, orchestra, voice and piano, solo piano, opera, film, and a variety of chamber groups. Poulenc’s musical style developed throughout his lifetime and was affected by a number of people, events, and artistic movements. A closer examination of Poulenc’s distinctive musical style will provide the musician and the listener alike with a better understanding of this singular composer. Francis Poulenc’s musical style can be traced to a number of important circumstances in his life. Born in January 1899 to a prosperous Parisian family, Poulenc’s parental heritage had a profound impact on his musical career. His father, Emile Poulenc, was from the French department of Aveyron, one of the most devoutly Catholic regions of the country. In describing his father’s personal faith, Poulenc depicted his father as “religious, without the slightest trace of pettiness.”1 Poulenc embraced his father’s faith, remaining deeply Catholic throughout his lifetime. His mother, Jenny, née Royer, hailed from a family of Parisian artist-craftsmen. She was considered to be an “urban socialite,” a free-thinker, and an artist.2 As a native of Paris and a member of the bourgeois artistic society, Poulenc’s mother encouraged the young child’s attraction to poetry, painting, literature, drama, ballet, and cinema.3 Her family, particularly her brother, also influenced Poulenc’s artistic development by taking him to art galleries, concerts, and plays at a very young age.

  • Cohesion of Composer and Singer: the Female Singers of Poulenc
COHESION OF COMPOSER AND SINGER: THE FEMALE SINGERS OF POULENC DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Joanne Musselman, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Adviser Approved by: Hilary Apfelstadt Wayne Redenbarger ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Susan Joanne Musselman 2007 ABSTRACT Every artist’s works spring from an aspiring catalyst. One’s muses can range from a beloved city to a spectacular piece of music, or even a favorite time of year. Francis Poulenc’s inspiration for song-writing came from the high level of intimacy he had with his close friends. They provided the stimulation and encouragement needed for a lifetime of composition. There is a substantial amount of information about Francis Poulenc’s life and works available. We are fortunate to have access to his own writings, including a diary of his songs, an in-depth interview with a close friend, and a large collection of his correspondence with friends, fellow composers, and his singers. It is through these documents that we not only glean knowledge of this great composer, but also catch a glimpse of the musical accuracy Poulenc so desired in the performance of his songs. A certain amount of scandal surrounded Poulenc during his lifetime and even well after his passing. Many rumors existed involving his homosexuality and his relationships with other male musicians, as well as the possible fathering of a daughter. The primary goal of this document is not to unearth any hidden innuendos regarding his personal life, however, but to humanize the relationships that Poulenc had with so many of his singers.

  • A “Farewell” to His Past: Krzysztof Penderecki's Clarinet Quartet And
A “FAREWELL” TO HIS PAST: KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI’S CLARINET QUARTET AND SEXTET A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2012 by Peter L. Cain B.M., Vanderbilt University, 2007 M.M., University of Minnesota, 2009 ii Abstract Krzysztof Penderecki’s turn in the last three decades to a more approachable style can be seen most clearly in his chamber music. Although larger works like his Credo and Seven Gates of Jerusalem have received more recent attention, Penderecki himself points to chamber music as his most fertile area of innovation. This document compares the Clarinet Quartet and Sextet to his other recent works, both chamber and large-scale. It uses motivic and intervallic analysis to expose the underlying structure of the works, and then compares the compositional fabric of these two pieces to other recent chamber works. It also situates these works within the larger picture of Penderecki’s later output and argues that the Clarinet Quartet is a key work that marks a turning point in his later “synthesis” period. iii © 2012 by Peter L.
