Harper Pennsylvania Geological Survey INTRODUCTION The first references to geologic topics in the Pittsburgh area date from the early 1800s (Aigster, 1813; Meade, 1828; Daubeny, 1839). However, much of what we now considered to be the basic geologic knowledge of western Pennsylvania languished until Henry Darwin Rogers' First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania examined the entire state in the late 1830s and finally reached publication in the late 1850s (Rogers, 1858). The Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under J.P. Lesley provided even more information. Field investigations by Stevenson (1876, 1877 and 1878) and White (1878) produced seminal volumes of geological work during this period, including descriptions of coals, limestones, and other mineral commodities, and geologic maps of the areas studied. Both of these geologists later published syntheses of their work and the works of others (White, 1891; Stevenson, 1906) that helped establish much of the stratigraphic and structural nomenclature of western Pennsylvania. Follow-up studies during the third and fourth surveys provided a wealth of data and interpretations in geologic atlases and folios by Hughes (1933), Johnson (1928, 1929), Munn (1910, 1911a, 1911b), Shaw and Munn (1911), and Woolsey (1905, 1906) that stand, for the most part, as (if you'll pardon the pun) a rock solid foundation for later economic, geologic, geotechnical, and environmental investigations. It was these reports that provided the basis for the six­ county Pittsburgh Regional Environmental Geologic Study (PREGS) during the 1970s (see the synopsis by Briggs, 1977) and many other more recent works. PHYSIOGRAPHY Most of southwestern Pennsylvania lies within the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province, an area having a generally level surface at an altitude great enough to permit erosion of deep valleys by streams. This level surface results from the essentially flat-lying nature of the bedrock near the earth's surface. The area around Pittsburgh, including Allegheny, Beaver, and Washington counties, is further subdivided into the Pittsburgh Low Plateau Section. The topography in this section is characterized by a relatively small amount of relief (Sevon, 1996). The hilltops in this area stand at about equal elevations, approximately 1,100-1,300 ft (335-400 m) above sea level, or about 350-550 ft (105-165 m) above the level ofthe rivers. By comparison, relief in the neighboring Allegheny Mountain Section to the east (from Chestnut Ridge to the Allegheny Front) commonly exceeds 1,500 ft (460 m) in the vicinity of the prominent high ridges that characterize that section. Most of the hilltops of western Pennsylvania are the remnant of an ancient, relatively broad, relatively flat surface formed during the Cenozoic. This surface has been highly dissected by numerous antecedent streams, at least some of which probably became established during the Mesozoic (Sevon, 1993). This surface sloped very gently toward the northwest, toward the area of the present-day Great Lakes. At least the larger streams probably meandered in broad, shallow valleys cut only a little

Espy Albig* Although the traffic on the Monongahela River from Brownsville to the Ohio had advanced from the canoe of the Indian and the Kentucky boat of the emigrant of Revolu- tionary times, to a water borne traffic of no mean size in passengers and miscellaneous freight, and to more than a million bushels of coal annually before the Monongahela waterway was improved by the installation of locks and dams late in 1841, yet no records remain of the constantly increasing stream of commerce passing over this route be- tween the east and the west. Here and there remains a fragment from a traveller, a ship builder or a merchant giv- ing a glimpse of the river activity of the later years of the 18th century and the early ones of the 19th century. The Ohio Company early recognized the importance of this waterway, and in 1754 Captain Trent on his way to the forks of the Ohio by Nemacolin's and the Redstone trails, built "The Hangard" at the mouth of Redstone Creek. From April 17th, when he surrendered his works to the French and retreated in canoes up the Monongahela, this avenue became more and more important until the steam railways supplanted the slower traffic by water. The easy navigation of this stream led that man of keen insight, George Washington, into error, when, under date of May 27, 1754, he writes: "This morning Mr. Gist ar- rived from his place, where a detachment of fifty men (French) was seen yesterday.

    The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania.

    Historical Development and Problems Within the Pennsylvanian Nomenclature of Ohio.1 GLENN E. LARSEN, OHIO Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey, Fountain Sq., Bldg. B, Columbus, OH 43224 ABSTRACT. An analysis of the historical development of the Pennsylvanian stratigraphic nomenclature, as used in Ohio, has helped define and clarify problems inherent in Ohio's stratigraphic nomenclature. Resolution of such problems facilitates further development of a useful stratigraphy and philosophy for mapping. Investigations of Pennsylvanian-age rocks in Ohio began as early as 1819- From 1858 to 1893, investigations by Newberry, I. C. White, and Orton established the stratigraphic framework upon which the present-day nomenclature is based. During the 1950s, the cyclothem concept was used to classify and correlate Pennsylvanian lithologic units. This classification led to a proliferation of stratigraphic terms, as almost every lithologic type was named and designated as a member of a cyclothem. By the early 1960s, cyclothems were considered invalid as a lithostratigraphic classification. Currently, Pennsylvanian nomenclature of Ohio, as used by the Ohio Division of Geological Survey, consists of four groups containing 123 named beds, with no formal formations or members. In accordance with the 1983 North American Stratigraphic code, the Ohio Division of Geological Survey considers all nomenclature below group rank as informal. OHIO J.     Fact Sheet UMTRCA Title I Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Disposal Site This fact sheet provides information about the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 Title I disposal site located at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The site is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management. Site Description and History The Canonsburg disposal site is a former uranium ore processing site located in the Borough of Canonsburg, Washington County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Pittsburgh. The site lies between Chartiers Creek and the Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad tracks. The surrounding land is primarily residential and commercial. The former mill processed uranium and other ores at the site between 1911 and 1957 and provided uranium for the U.S. government national defense programs. Standard Chemical operated the site as a radium extraction plant from 1911 to 1922. Later, Vitro Corporation of America acquired the property and processed ore to extract radium and uranium salts. From 1942 until 1957, Vitro was under contract to the federal government to recover uranium from ore and scrap. Processing operations at the site ceased in 1957. For the next 9 years, the site was used only for storage under a U.S. Atomic Energy Commission contract. In 1967, the property was purchased by the Canon Development Company and was leased to tenant companies for light industrial use. Location of the Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Disposal Site Historical milling operations at the site generated radioactive mill tailings, a predominantly sandy material. Some of the Regulatory Setting tailings were shipped to Burrell Township 50 miles away to be used as additional fill in a railroad landfill.
