    2016 ANNUAL REPORT BUILDING RESILIENCE • EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES Cover Rationale This year our theme is ‘Resilience’ to give tribute to the various ways in which humans survive and strive through adverse time, such as natural disasters or conict. Surviving and striving through such events however requires a helping hand, that is where MERCY Malaysia plays a signicant role. Through various projects we aim to transfer expert knowledge, skills, provide necessary materials and equipment to enhance communities resilience against the disasters they face. One such project in 2016, which is depicted on the cover, took place in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Sierra Leone was crippled for several months by the Ebola virus, rapidly spreading amongst communities and killing thousands. Although communities showed great strength and courage in ghting the virus, the high level of poverty and lack of sanitation facilities in rural communities made some eorts eeting. Thereby, MERCY Malaysia decided to provide communities with assistance through the activities of building wells, delivering hygiene kits and educating students from 100 schools about hygiene and health, with the objective of increasing the communities’ resilience through the transfer of knowledge and provision of essential sanitation items. The Diary of a District Officer: Alastair Morrison's 1953 Trip to the Kelabit Highlands Abstract In 1953, Alastair Morrison, then acting District Officer for the Bara, traveled to the Kelabit Highlands along with his wife, photographer Hedda Morrison, and ever changing entourage of 'coolie" porters and guides. This journey was part of his regular responsibilities as a District Officer. During such tours, Morrison surveyed longhouse communities and collected information about the local population and spoke to people about government policies, school fees, taxes, the registering of guns, and often sought to resolve local disputes. Such journeys were summarized in formal reports. However, Morrison also kept travel notebooks, which he later used to write his memoir, which summarized the highlights of his life in Sarawak (Morrison 1993).

    PULONG TAU BUFFER ZONE PULONG TAU About ITTO The ITTO is an inter-governmental organization established under United Nations sponsorship (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development or UNCTAD) with its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. The ITTO PULONG TAU BUFFER ZONE forum is created through international treaty, the International Tropical Timber Agreement (ITTA). Its current Ecosystem, membership stands at 73, comprising 35 from producer countries and 38 from Biodiversity and consumer countries. The ITTO addresses the problems of tropical forests and tropical forestry, such as deforestation and social issues. People Its objectives are to act as a forum for them into effect; consultation and cooperation, and to Ecosystem, Biodiversity and People ITTO Project PD 635/12 Rev. 2 (F). Buffer Zone Management for Pulong Tau promote trade of tropical timber from National Park with Involvement of Local Communities in Sarawak, Malaysia sustainable sources. The technical committees under which ITTO operates are Economic Information and Market Intelligence, Forest Industry and Reforestation and Forest Management. ITTO also funds projects and other policy initiatives aimed at developing industries at both community and industrial scales. All projects are funded benefits of national parks and wildlife by voluntary contributions, mostly from consumer member countries.     Cultural and Religious Studies, January 2020, Vol. 8, No. 1, 1-13 doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2020.01.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Ascent of Money and Social Transformation Among the Badeng of Sarawak Tan Chee-Beng Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China This article examines the Badeng Kenyah, a people in Sarawak’s interior who are experiencing the shift from subsistence living to a money economy. Ethnographic description and oral history are used to examine the inside factors (such as the individual search for livelihood) and outside forces (government and the market) that brought about this shift. Some philosophical reflection addresses the impact of money on individuality and social life, with inspiration drawn from the classic works of Karl Polanyi and Georg Simmel. When the myth of money becomes accepted as a norm, human self-interest naturally guides individual behavior toward commodification, a path negotiated through those moral values that a community has maintained intact and those it has redefined to suit a monetary economy. For better and for worse, commodification works vast changes on social relations and the environment. What the Badeng experienced is what all modern peoples have gone through at one point or another. By looking at what happened to these particular people, we see again the experience that has shaped us all. The need for money is a ground rule, and once accepted it transforms people’s existence.

Foreword here has been a resurgence in commercial inland waterway transport, particularly for cargo, in Asia and Europe. The major rivers of India, China and Southeast Asia are being used as an alternative to road T transport in order to achieve greater fuel conservation, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and lower road and vehicle maintenance costs. Experiences of Asian countries, where more sparsely settled areas of rural population have historically relied on boats for passenger and cargo transport, such as Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, are especially relevant to Sarawak. A natural resource, large rivers like the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Rajang, offer a viable option to difficult and expensive construction, maintenance and operation of roads, of bridges and vehicles, especially through steep and difficult terrain. In Sarawak, the road network is still underdeveloped and, unlike Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia, there is no rail network passing through rural areas and connecting the main towns.
