Early Base Ball in Mobile The first record of baseball games being played in Mobile was an account in the Mobile Daily News, Feb. 1st 1868 – The game was for the championship of the state between the: -- Dra [illegible] and the Mobile ball club resulting in a score of 63 to 50 in favor of the Dra[illegible]. It took 2 hours and fourty minutes time to play the game, which was said to be very exciting to five hundred who witnessed the game, not withstanding the very cold weather on that February afternoon. There is no mention of the number of innings that were played,(if any) before the contest was ended. From the report of the game, it is evident that each player of the nine on each team were individually credited by the scores that they made and charged with the number of times that they were Tagged out. R. Ellison was the umpire and R. Goubil and W. Abstract The First Fifty Years of Professional Baseball in Richmond, Virginia: 1883-1932 Scott Patrick Mayer Master of Arts in History ,University ofRichmond, May 2001 Advisor: Dr. W. Harrison Daniel A detailed history of Richmond, Virginia's relationship with professional baseball has never been chronicled, especially the turbulent, early years of its development. This study explores Richmond's relationship with baseball from 1883-1932. It includes information about the men who played on the field, the team owners, and also comments on the relationship shared by the team and the city. The most reliable source of information regarding early baseball is the local newspaper. A detailed reading of the Richmond Daily Dispatch, and the successive Richmond Dispatch and Richmond Times-Dispatch, was undertaken for this project. While several newspapers have existed in Richmond's history, often competing for readership during the same period, the Dispatch was selected for its continuity in publication and for its support and consistent reporting ofbaseball.

JOSEPH JACKSON ERNST Ah, the legend of Shoeless Joe lives on! By now, all of you know that a future dominant owner of the Hot Stove League (circa 2030) was born on January 4, 1994. By my projections, Shoeless will be etching the Ernst name on the Cup for the 25th or 26th time in about 2030, after I allow him to take over the day-to-day management of the Senators. And, of course, Shamu's boy1 will be bringing up the rear in 2030. I have some other projections about the future of the Hot Stove League, but these will be saved for a future issue of From the Bullpen. Congratulations are in order to Rookie and his spouse, Patty, on the recent birth of Matthew James Buser, born January 28, 1994, 8 lbs. 1 oz. Good speed, okay glove. Rookie has indicated that Matthew will be setting the table for Shoeless. Nicely done. DRAFT DAY As you all know, the holiest of all Hot Stove League calendar days, Draft Day, has been rescheduled from April 1 to Saturday, March 26, 1994.
