PRESIDENT’S REPORT The 2012/13 season has been very challenging for the club and the committee. I must thank the hard working committee who without their efforts we would have struggled even more than we did to field teams on a weekly basis. Unfortunately a lot of team selections were about availability than ability and as such we suffered in being consistently competitive on the field. A big thank you to Ryan Kiddle, who was rightly awarded the President’s trophy for his substantial efforts leading up to and during the season.

First and second grade, not from lack of trying, were not competitive whereas thirds made the final and unfortunately were beaten by Northern Districts and the Gold’s in fourth grade fell at the same hurdle as last year going down to the eventual winner Keira in the major semi. The Blues and Reds had some good games but ultimately were affected by availability issues in the higher grades and had a high turnover of players during the season. A big thank you must go to the Captains for their help over the season. Taun and Amit in firsts, Lee in seconds, Pat in 3rds, Tim and Ryan in Golds, Trev in Reds and senior committee of players for Blues.

The club is in a rebuilding phase! We have lost over the last few years effectively 2 competitive first grade teams due to changing employment conditions in the district along with three coaches.

On the brighter side of things our scholarship program continues to bring student players into the club. This year, thanks to Bob Wheway we were able to offer 5 scholarships to Engineering based students along with Miles Brown Mining Engineering scholarship. We also offered a first scholarship under the 1961 Club banner with monies raised at the 50th reunion dinner. Our scholarship program will be the core of our club going forward and we are planning to expand it further but unfortunately money is the core to the success of this venture.

This season we had to dip into our financial reserves by about $4500. Unfortunately we still receive no funding or assistance from the University nor does any other sporting club on campus even though our student members pay a SAF fee. Our ground hire fees from URAC are higher than council fees which is another issue we have to deal with. Pembo and I, along with other sporting club presidents are trying to work our way through the politics of University administration in an attempt to redress the situation. We have Bob Wheway, a fellow of the University assisting us in opening doors to talk to people. Bob has offered to be on our committee next season which we have accepted. Will we be successful? it is too early to say but we will continue to ask questions and knock on doors. Without recognition from the University it will be hard to keep sporting clubs viable on the campus going forward.

On a positive note, at time of writing we have a number of applicants to fill the coaching position for next season along with a number of potential first grade caliber students looking to play for us next season. We have started our recruiting now so we get them signed up before other clubs swoop. We have also accepted an offer from a Psychologist specializing in working with sporting teams to assist us over the next season. Once we get our coaching position filled we can start serious planning for next season.

The University in conjunction with the Bradman Foundation is putting up a scholarship for an Indian student who has a cricket background to study at Wollongong Uni. We have been told that this student will play for us. This scholarship goes for 3 years and is awarded annually so over time we will have a core group of high caliber Indian players. This diversity is what makes Uni Cricket Club unique in the district.

Again this year we provided players to the annual Gilly day 20/20 match. This game is the envy of all cricket clubs in Australia. A select group of our players got to play with and against greats of the cricketing world. All cricketers dream to play with one great but to play on the same team as Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Adam Gillchrist, Damien Martyn, Tom Moody, and a host of other test players is something one will never forget. Amit Balgi, Ryan Holcroft, Tom O’Brien, Andrew Giffin and Gav Barlow all had that honor. The highlight for me was Gav bowling his, not sure what they were, to Brian Lara and getting him caught on the boundary.

The club now plays an annual match against the Bradman Foundation on Bradman Oval, again something other clubs cannot offer to players. Highlight this year was Tom O’Brien scoring a century in that game. We have also started playing Masters Games and have had a number of past players going back to dust off their whites. This year we played against Keira and a Southern Highlands team and won both matches. Next year we are looking to play at least 6 games on a home and away basis.

We have established contact with St George District Cricket Club and are in the process of signing an MOU with them. From this relationship we will get access to their training methods, a game against their Colts team and helping hand for our players if they want to pursue their careers in Sydney or if a player from St George wants to move to the Illawarra we will be the club for them to join.

This year we had only one junior team. Thanks to Michael Williams and others for running our junior program. Hopefully next year we will be back to 2 teams.

The aim of the committee is to get the club back to where it belongs as the premium club in Illawarra cricket and to offer to students a memorable student experience playing cricket. A successful relationship with the Uni is a cornerstone of this and we will push, knock on doors and do everything we can to address this. I look forward to next season and the challenges it offers.

Bruce Tosswill President SECRETARY’S REPORT After a successful change in the UWCC committee structure the previous season, a shuffle in the Executive Committee saw me take the role of Hon. Secretary for my first year. I would firstly like to thank John Pemberton, who had previously held the role for many years for his guidance and assistance, as well as the tireless effort he puts in to ensure the ongoing success of the club. I would also like to thank Bruce Tosswill as President. His leadership and commitment to the club has also ensured we continue to be in a strong position as we look to the future both on and off the field.

Our Committee again worked tirelessly off the field to ensure we were as successful as possible on the field. Along with election of the Executive at the AGM, various new sub-committee chairs were elected – Strategic Planning/Vice President Phil Younger, Match Operations Ravish Murali; Juniors Michael Williams; Sponsorship & Fundraising Geraldine Sunderland; Team Performance Taun Stanham. Each chair also filled a number of other vacant roles – Ravish Murali Chairman of Selectors/Organ Writer/Web Master; Taun Stanham Club Captain, and seconded others to fill the various sub-committee roles organisers - Simon Irish Social; Doc Mockler gear steward; Trevor Pallier capital works; Bruce Tosswill as 1961 Club chair. Many thanks to all for their efforts. Thanks also to our Club Patrons, Deputy Vice Chancellor Judy Raper and the newly appointed Vice Chancellor Paul Wellings for their support.

On the field, despite a poor finish to the season in the higher grades there has been much promise for future seasons as the club goes through a rebuilding phase, with many younger student players joining the club. Losing the likes of experience players such as Graham Stinson, Wayne Livermore, Darren Murphy and previous first grade Captain Kurt Miller meant it was always going to be hard to find replacements in key positions within the first grade team. I would like to congratulate 1st Grade Captain Amit Balgi as well as his assistant Taun Stanham for their efforts in pulling together the young and inexperienced side they way they did. Unable to recruit a coach for the season also meant these boys needed to step up and lead the team through training, and they did a great job with at times difficult circumstances.

A change to the competition structure to a 100 over format as well as the introduction of a T20 competition for all grades kept the captain, umpires and administrators on their toes. Despite its seemingly confusing point score and time formats, most clubs seemed to get the concept as the season progressed. We look forward to Cricket Illawarra’s review of the season and its recommendations to further improve its structure.

We did have some success in the lower grades with 3rd grade making the final v Northern Districts and the 4th Golds losing their semi final for the 2nd year running. Both sides also made the semi finals of the inaugural T20 competitions. Thanks to both Pat Clarke and Tim Barrow as captains of both sides.

Thanks also to Lee Sproal, our 2nd Grade Captain who worked with a number of players in 2nd grade this year. Instability due to players promoted to 1st grade, work commitments and a strong 3rd grade showing meant it was a tough season for 2s, but Lee supported the club’s endeavours to ensure success around him.

This can also be said for our 4th grade Blues and Reds. Both newly elected Life Member Jim Scardanas and Trevor Pallier continued to play with a mix of youth and experience, giving opportunities for new players to the club to enjoy cricket at Uni while dealing with regular unavailability and player promotion. I thank Jim and Trev as Captains for their commitment to the Blues and Reds and hope they continue to promote the strong traditions these teams are now building.

Sponsors The Master Builders Club continued to be Major Sponsors of the UWCC – it’s 10th year of sponsorship agreement. As such the weekly post game Call of the Board and Player of the Day presentation together with other functions (Christmas Party, Trivia Night & Presentation Dinner) were held and strongly attended by all at the Builders. Our popular members cash draw ensured a strong weekly attendance also. All members became members of the IMBC – part of their fees. It is vitally important that all club players support the Builders Club on Saturday evenings.

Peter Woods from PM Woods & Associates continued as a Silver sponsor. Thanks to Peter for his continued support. ACEIT Sportswear supplied the senior and junior training T shirts as their support. Diskray continued their long standing support of the UWCC. Thanks also to Margaret Pemberton for her support of the 1st grade team every week. ECOCEM also assisted with junior sponsorships. Drive Mining (thanks to Miles Brown) again supported our scholarships scheme, along with Bob Wheway from the University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Engineering. Bob has come on board and supported the club this year and looks forward to joining the club committee for the upcoming season. We also would like to thank North Wollongong Indoor Sports Centre and Spotless for their contributions this year.

Stumping Serious Diseases Day / Bradman Foundation Match Once again Adam Gilchrist (along with Sir Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Carl Hooper, Adam Hollioake, Darrell Tuffey, Scott Styris, Graham Hick, James Brayshaw, Wendell Sailor, together with a host of sporting and music celebrities) was the star attraction for the University’s major fundraiser for medical research – the Stumping Serious Diseases Day. University players and scholarship holders Gavin Barlow, Ryan Holcroft, Tom O’Brien and Andrew Giffin together with 1sts captain Amit Balgi also were selected to participate. The club provided the match organization for the SSD (providing all match equipment, umpires and Maggs as scorer - pictured with Lara & Richards) and provided a vital role with the covers when rain again threatened to ruin the afternoon. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time in the week leading up to and on the day.

Highlight of the day was definitely watching Sir Viv Richards bat with Brian Lara at UO1, with a close 2nd Gavin Barlow - who’s rank full toss dismissed Brian Lara with a catch on the boundary.

As part of a planned partnership between UOW and the Bradman Foundation, a University XI was selected to play a Foundation XI at Bradman Oval on 10th February. Last years match was unfortunately washed out, and a mixed of players from all grades travelled by mini van to play an unknown team comprising of former Tasmanian cricketer and current international umpire Rod Tucker. A brilliant 100no by young keeper batsman Tom O’Brien (batting to the left) ensured Uni set a big total, but the experience of Tucker helped the Foundation XI win the match in the final over.

Scholarships / Representatives Matt Opie, Gavin Barlow, Andrew Giffin, Taun Stanham, Michael Storey and Ryan Holcroft were awarded Club Scholarships for the season. Taun and Ryan played for the Illawarra U21 teams (Taun as Captain). All played consistently in the 1sts/2nds team and will benefit from the season past.

We also awarded our first Mining Engineering Scholarship with thanks to Drive Mining, accepted by Will Norrie. We also offered five Engineering Scholarships to Ravish Murali, Dave Everitt, Abhay Singh, York Stanham and Ravi Kallum. These were available thanks to the support of Bob Wheway from the University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Engineering.

The 1961 Club also awarded a scholarship to Tom O’Brien.

The table above shows the Financial Statement for the University of Wollongong Cricket Club for the 20012/13 season. The accounts show a loss of $4259.99. Why a loss?

It was a very dry summer and we played just about every Saturday. Hence ground fees, umpires fees and cricket ball purchases were very much higher than the previous season.

In addition, the committee is committed to keeping costs for UOW students as low as possible. The $150 student fee certainly worked as we doubled the number of students in the club. However it does not achieve a great result for income as it costs the club about $500 per player each season. Yes - the club heavily subsidises it's student members. Can we keep doing this? In the short term yes but in the long term it is imperative that the UOW starts to support its Cricket Club.

The junior loss was most unfortunate. We purchased clothing and balls for three teams but only one eventuated. In addition, the robbery of coach Speck's car resulted in a loss of kit and fees.

Thanks to scholarship providers Bob Wheway and Miles Brown. We were able to increase the number of student scholarships to 13.

The investment account had $2,290 added due to interest paid. The total amount of $48,718.27 is due for renewal on 16th September 2012. It was invested for six months at the interest rate of 5.5% with the Illawarra Credit Union.

We must thank our sponsors, especially our major sponsor Illawarra Master Builders, as well as Peter Woods & Associates, Diskray, Aceit Sportwear, Drive Mining, Spotless and NWIS for the seniors. We need this sponsorship to continue in order to keep our fees at a reasonable level, so I urge you all to patronise them, as well as look for any additional sponsors for next year.

John Pemberton, Honorary Treasurer. 1ST GRADE REPORT A tough season for the flagship, to say the least. It was a season to perhaps forget, although there were many highlights and stand out players that need to be recognised.

We began the season full of hope, that we could replicate the efforts of 2 years back in reaching the two-day final, and almost going on to win the premiership against Dapto. This year however, we unfortunately were missing many of our senior players, such as Kurt Miller, Wayne Livermore, Graeme Stinson and to some extent Richard Sykes - the kind of players that could walk in to any 1st grade club in the Illawarra. We knew that this year was predominantly going to be a rebuilding year for the club, a year in which results may not be favourable, a year where youth would develop.

With the loss of Kurt this year, I was given captaincy. A tough job, but a job that I accepted. Myself, along with the other senior players in the team – Dean Henderson, Luke McNamara and Taun Stanham – knew what was to be expected from the team, and helped a lot of our youthful players transition to grade cricket. One of those players being Thomas O’Brien, who came to UOWCC from Wests and hoped to be the number one gloveman in the club. After watching him at training, it was evident that we had recruited a very classy keeper/batsmen. Tom remained in the 1st grade team for the entirety of the season after back-to-back good performances with both the gloves and the bat. One of those innings included a highly commended 31 against Wollongong in Round 2. Tom should be congratulated on a great debut season in 1st Grade – scoring 194 runs and over 15 dismissals – we hope to see him back next year.

At the mid-point of the season, Uni were 0 from 10, and the obvious reason was because our batting was letting us down – big time. A promising top order continued to fail, match after match, and we were consistently being bowled out for total’s less than 150 and sometimes less than 80. I am not sure what the exact cause for this was; Perhaps ill discipline? Perhaps a lack of concentration? Whatever it was, we could not seem to rectify our mistakes. During this miserable batting display, there were a couple of players who dug deep to give the bowlers a slightly more respectable target to bowl at. The two Luke’s, McNamara and McGregor, were undoubtedly our best with the bat, both scoring over 200 runs for the season and averaging 17 and 15 respectively. Both would have liked to add another 20 runs to that average, however these boys often batted as ‘one-man-wolfpack’s’ while everyone else crumbled around them. For example, in rounds 11 and 12, Uni arguably put in our best performances. Firstly, after scoring 203 against Wests (McGregor 48, Calder 43) we were able to bowl them out for 149 (Balgi 4/34), securing our first win for the season and my first win as captain. We then backed this performance up with 170 against Wollongong (McNamara 59, Stanham 40) and we were looking for back-to-back wins before Wollongong scraped home in a thrilling last over finish.

Amit Balgi batting with Tom O'Brien keeping in the SSD match.

Although our batting let us down this year, we were able to draw a lot of positives from our bowling. With the loss of our two previous strike bowlers – Stinson and Sykes – we turned to the experience of Dean Henderson and youth of Ryan Holcroft. Both of these players dealt with the pressures of bowling to defend low totals, and had great seasons in spite of the team’s performances. Dean and Ryan bowled in partnership with each other with the new ball and were notorious for picking up an early breakthrough. Dean was tremendous in the way that he bowled non- stop throughout his spell, and put his blood, sweat and tears in to his overs….especially his sweat. Ryan had big shoes to fill this year, but he evolved as our strike bowler and I often turned to him to bowl out 15 overs or for a breakthrough. He picked up 17 wickets this year alongside Dean’s 15, and the establishment of this bowling partnership was one of the major successes of our season. One other bowler stood out this year, that being Simon Irish. Simmo took 14 wickets this year, and was generally introduced in to the attack when I needed a wicket or when I needed to slow down the flow of runs. Simon has great control with his bowling, and this allowed me to set off-side dominated fields.

As a whole, some positives can be drawn from this season, but ultimately the team’s performance this year was forgettable. As captain, I failed to lead by example with the bat, but let us hope that we can prepare well for next season and that we can retain all of this season’s players. I’d just like to thank all the senior players in all grades for their support of me during this tough season.

2ND GRADE REPORT Firstly thanks to all the committee members for their contribution to running the club. It is a thankless task that has to be done and the guys that are doing it are doing a good job.

Thanks to Geraldine for supporting 2nd grade each week and doing afternoon teas.

And thanks to the person who in my opinion was one of the hardest workers in the club this year, Ryan Kiddle. Not only was he the club secretary he was the chairman of selectors for most of the season. I am sure he spent many a hour trying to sort out teams and chasing players.

Although we all thought at the start of the year that playing 1 day cricket each week would make it easier to pick teams, this was far from the truth. The number of players unavailable each week varied greatly. This meant many a time there was a team without 11 players on the field. So a big thanks to those players who made themselves available for a majority of the games.

In 2nd grade this year, like every other grade we had many players. Unfortunately there was not a lot of great performances throughout the season. Of the 18 - 1 days games played we only won 4 and ended up 3rd last on the ladder.

In the T20 games we had a tie against Bally, lost by 1 run to Keira, had a win against Dapto and got flogged by Wests. And just missed out on the finals.

As individuals, there were 7 individual scores of 50 runs or more scored by batsmen. Bill Reid, Chris Franks, Craig Muller, Rowan Dray and myself all scored 50’s. And in the bowling there was only 1 5fa or better, which was by Bill Reid in the final round. But all that being said it was not from lack of trying.

I am sure everyone will have their own highlight from the season. For me one of these was in a game where our permanent number 11 batsmen, Stu Flynn, told me he had to leave a game early. So we put him up the order. As it turns out he batted so well that he missed his ride to Sydney and he went on to score his highest score of 45.

Thanks to all those people I have had the pleasure of playing with this year. It has been enjoyable even if it was not the most successful of seasons.

One other small thing I would like to mention. When I started playing cricket at Uni, all I was interested in doing was turning up each week and playing. Then after a couple of seasons, I thought all I am doing is taking. What can I do to help the club? For me that was to come down to the club and do odd jobs. Like fix the nets up. I could do it at my pace and when I wanted. This made me feel like I was putting back into the club.

With the new committee structure there are many tasks that people will be able to contribute. You may be studying journalism and could be the organ writer or an Engineering that could do odd jobs, marketing looking after fundraising, or IT being the web master. There are lots of small jobs that can be done by many people instead of a burden on a few. So please think about what you can contribute and nominate at the next AGM.

3RD GRADE REPORT Firstly I'd like to thank a few of the experienced guys I had around me this year who helped me as captain - Pembo, JB and Borris, you guys always had great input on the field and really helped me find my feat as captain. A big thanks Maggs and Geraldine for their help through the finals periods, and Kiddle for his never ending work with selections, certainly not a job I'll be putting my hand up for any time soon.

It was an interesting and successful season for us this year with a total of 43 players lining up for us this season. We did eventually find some stability after the holiday period and made finals for both T20 and one dayers.

Starting with the T20 comp we kicked off with draw all the way up in rainy Helensburgh, despite it pouring down all morning and throughout the rest of the day the Burgh captain wanted to hang around too see if it might stop, I't didn't, so we had beers instead. Next up we had Bally who batted very well making 2/114 thanks largely to our inability to catch. Not to worry though ,Dave Kampers stole the show with and excellent 56 off far less deliveries seeing us cruise to victory with 3 overs spare. This certainly had us thinking we were well enough suited to the short game, but we ended up losing both matches in the header and only registering one more win for the brief T20 season, leaving us out of the finals. However Dapto had other ideas, and ,as Dapto do, they played an unqualified player handing us a finals berth. It was not to be, however, bowing out to Wollongong despite another good performance by Kampers who made 38

Onto the real stuff now, 100ish over cricket! Pre Christmas we won 6 and dropped 3 which wasn't half bad considering the ever changing side we had week to week. The first match we gave Keira a touch up thanks to JB carrying his bat making 57 and Sam who also started the season well with 4/27. We had another huge win over Wests posting 305, thanks to Chris Franks who made 119 and cost the Wests boys 5 balls in the creek along the way. Will Norrie also ensured he wouldn't play another game for thirds by scoring a rapid 75 and a handy 3/20 with the ball.

The following week we had the pleasure of meeting the Illawarra's newest umpire Jack Timpano. We were rolled for 117 despite Candyman netting the figures of 5/21 we couldn't snag a win. Against Dapto JB once again carried his bat scoring an unbeaten 87 with Glee and Pembo each making forty odds. Then it was time for Bones to bowl himself out of 3rds taking his first 7 fah for the club, really bowling well in the damp synthetic conditions. JB made an excellent 46 in a losing effort v Port that saw him also get called up to the higher grades. (note that he was averaging 80 at this point) We beat a depleted ND pretty easily but went down to Corrimal despite an awesome Borris knock of 72 in his return to thirds.

Pembo & JB batting vs Dapto in 103 runs stand - their Symonds bats totaled 66 years of experience.

We won the next three convincingly, Rosete the pick against Bally 3/2 and against Keira 4/6, I also got 3 four fas in that same period. After that we only dropped 2 games leading up to the finals, and we had a team that could have a real go at winning it. Notable efforts here were Philthy with 4 fah against Wollongong and Harry in the last around of the season smashed 66 runs against the Burgh.

Making it through to the semi finals ranked 2nd meant bowling first was our best option against Corrimal, thanks to some fruity rules for the finals. And we really stepped it up a notch in the field and with the ball knocking them over for a very getable 80. Sam bowled perfect lines 2-14 and Philthy got some key wickets 3/26 and I was onsong that day getting my only 5 wicket haul for the year with 5-14. As we all know low scores can sometimes be challenging to chase, but thanks to Doulis who made 24 and Borris, who showed great temperament making 27not out which included a huge 6 to bring up the winning runs we booked ourselves a place in the finals.

We were up against ND in the finals who happened to be the side that knocked us out of the semis last year, chasing our score 7 wickets down. Predictably they sent us in. We then piled on the runs in excellent batting conditions. The star of our innings was Harry who made a terrific 62. Borris batted nicely for 34 as did Pest 33. That saw us post 190, which was a very defendable total. However it was not to be, unable to find the performance we had shown the week before. Sam 3/21 bowled very well as did Philthy, but we couldn't muster a victory as they got our score 7 down.

All in all a great season with a great bunch of blokes and a fantastic learning experience for myself captaining. I'm sure a lot of the guys will have learnt a lot from the final despite us losing, which will help them now doubt at some point down the track.

Pat Clarke Captain

4TH GRADE GOLD REPORT A familiar story for Golds this season! We finished third on the ladder, the same position we were in last year, though this time we were one game short of being equal with the competition leaders.

The finals campaign started in impressive fashion, making 9-175 against Corrimal Green, before holding our nerve and bowling them out for 132.

Then in the semi-final, we won the toss and batted, just like last season, this time scrambling our away to 130, with Nick Anderson and Dan Baker leading the way. But, once again, it just wasn't quite enough and after fighting hard, we bowed out with a three wicket loss, one game short of the big dance.

Still that shouldn't take away from the magnificent contributions of the boys. Unlike other fourth grade teams, we have a more even spread of talent, so victory requires a team effort.

Chris Ford and Andrew Clark did a great job opening the batting and setting a platform every week, both making more than 200 runs for the season. Ryan Kiddle was outstanding during the finals series and could have won both games off his own bat, had he not have copped the two best deliveries of the weekend to prevent half-centuries. Dan Baker and Nick Anderson got better as the competition went on, while Luke Sweetman, Nick Kosiak and Dave Bennett Low all played valuable roles with the bat.

Josh Langerak picked up key wickets throughout the season, finishing with 30 wickets, and regularly bowled in partnership with Josh Tier, making life difficult for batsmen every week. Matt Holmes had another successful season with the ball to pick up 21 wickets, while Kosiak and Anderson provided strike and the ability to stem the flow of runs.

In the Twenty20 competition, Golds also made it to the semi-finals, though the win over Dapto, where we rolled them for 40-odd, was a season highlight. So too was knocking over Corrimal Green for 40 in the regular season.

My personal thanks to everyone who played or filled in for the Golds this year, it makes cricket so enjoyable to have had such a good group to play alongside every week. Also to Kiddle for his numerous contributions to both Golds and the club in general, it's greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone comes back next season for another successful year with Uni cricket.

Good as gold, Tim Barrow Captain

4TH GRADE BLUE REPORT The Blues entered the season high on hopes on finishing in the top half of the competition. Unfortunately it was not to be. We finished on equal points with the Reddies but behind them in 15th position on run rate.

Going into the last round we were ahead by 1 win but the Reds beat the eventual premiers easily and we lost another close game. We were always competitive except for 1 game, against the premiers who spanked our bowling all over the park along with injuring 2 of our players so coming to bat, we only had 8 batsmen as we were already short 1 player.

The Blues were severely impacted by the unavailability of players up the grades and injuries to our experienced players along with the perennial student break. We had the highest turnover of players. Phil Younger broke a finger trying to take a catch; I did my back in and so did LP. This year we had 4 different captains, even Andy Thorne had a go.

Regardless of the results we had a key group of enthusiastic players. Shea Hansen was always available, well almost always, became our wicket keeper and trained hard each week to improve his keeping. Matt Newham was our most regular player and improved as the season progressed. Abhay transferred over from the Reddies and left his batting there. He was always good for a comment or 10.

Our best player was Babar Shabbir who scored 306 runs in 7 matches with a top score of 115* averaging 51. Unfortunately Babar was called up to higher grades too often. After that Cameron, Capt Scardanas, Atanaan, Matt and Lovepret each totaled about 100 runs.

Bowling wise we didn’t fare much better. Occasional highlights but no consistency. Even ever frugal Andy Thorne took a bit of battering. Peter Clarke made 2 appearances throughout the year between injuries in an endeavor to reach a milestone of 600 wickets. He is now on 599 wickets so we will have him back next season.

Our fielding had its days but mostly not. Regardless of the results everyone enjoyed themselves and tried their hardest. Thorney actually scored 5 runs this season compared to last year’s total of zero. His son in law Craig Shipway scored more runs, 56 in a season than Andy has in his total career.

Highlight of the season was Abhay Singh who always has a comment on everything cricket wise being dumbstruck after his introduction to Peter Clarke. He just couldn’t get a word in. Next year will be the season of the Blues. Watch out Reds and Golds.

Bruce Tosswill

4TH GRADE RED REPORT The ‘Reds’ had a mediocre season – winning just 4 regular matches – finishing in 14th spot on the competition ladder.*

We won two matches that were imperative to win – one against the eventual competition winners – Keira Red – and another against our beloved Uni Blues. We also defeated Keira Black and Dapto Blue – with the aid of a couple of our Uni Gold players.

We also managed to win a 20:20 match against West Reds on turf – dismissing them for 40 runs after having posted a score just over 100 runs. So in hindsight you could say it was a ’pretty tough’ 2012- 2013 season overall.

We lost a few close games against Wollongong by a margin of about 8 runs and also against Helensburgh with 9 players – at one stage by about 20 runs. Nth Districts beat us by about 6 runs in a 20:20 match – so we were in the hunt a couple of times – only to lose a few close ones at the death.

Our player rotation policy was a real problem – a bit like the one which is employed by the current Australian Test & One Day sides. It was pretty much a case who was fit was able to play – most of the time. Our lack of consistency was then attributable to the fact we never seemed to have the same bunch of guys on the field each week.

The only regulars we seemed to have were – Richard B, Arif Mehmet, Danny Efting, Nissanka Fernando, James Borthwick, Dave Everitt and myself. This constituted a core of about 6 or 7 regular players. Other guys who played on occasions – were Luke Dalla, Veeru, Adam Bagnall, Miles Brown, Abhay Singh – Harry “Sri” Govinda, Ravish Murali, and Ravi Kallam – who went up to 3rds.

Most of the time we struggled to get enough guys on the park and there were several times when we played with a few short. Ultimately it proved the difference between winning and losing to a large extent or a large degree. That said – I think the guys generally enjoyed each other’s company – most of the time – particularly when one of us brought along an esky full of beer.

There were of course a few tales of woe – but perhaps the best story I can recall from the whole season – is when we turned up to play against Keira Red at Beaton Park – LAST GAME and I couldn’t find the game ball..While we were getting ready to go out and field after having won the toss – I searched frantically in vain for the match ball.* (looked everywhere – couldn’t find it).* As I knew the opposition capt. fairly well he was quite happy to loan us one of their match balls from a 20:20 which was about 4 overs old.* We proceeded to reek havoc with their batsmen and bowled them out for 98 runs.* We chased their total down with the loss of 5 wkts. While I was waiting for my turn to bat – I managed to find the lost ball in long grass and went out after the game and presented to their Capt who wasn’t too upset – luckily.

There were a couple of good individual performances with bat and ball – during the season.* With the ball there were a couple of 5 fas.* Ross Hadfield took 5-15 against Nth Districts – and Nissanka – our Sri Lankan import had the Dapto Blues batsmen in a spin with a haul of 5-37. With the bat a few guys got 50’s – Miles Brown, Manav, Ravi Kallam, Adam Bagnall and the ever reliable Rowdy Baker.

Overall I was quite happy to captain the illustrious Reds and look forward to having a run again with the Reddies next season.*

Hopefully it will be a more fruitful one in the scheme of things.

Our Trophy winners for season 2012 -2013 were;- for bowling – Arif Mehmet (19 wickets @ 21.47) and for batting – Richard Baker (209 runs at 19.00).* A sterling effort from both guys. Well done.

Trevor Pallier Captain

U12’s REPORT The University of Wollongong Cricket Club fielded an Under 12 team in the Junior Competition for 2012/13.

The side consisted a 14 players, a number of those players had been part of previous UOW junior teams and 5 were new players. Each of these 14 players were given the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the game of cricket. The club policy of playing cricket for enjoyment and providing an environment that allows all players to improve their skills in order to achieve long term participation in the game of cricket.

The team won a few games but lost too many close ones and so did not make the finals. Every game was played in a positive manner and every player enjoyed themselves no matter what the result.

Individual success was achieved by both Aidan Cook and Ty Kroes who were selected into Illawarra representative teams.

The season was capped off with a Presentation Night held at the University Pavilion. Of course the rain came but spirits were not faltered and an enjoyable evening ended another fantastic season for the UOW Junior Cricketers.

Looking forward to the 2013/14 season.
