The Wyomissing Creek is a small, but vitally important stream that flows through our community. The land that drains the rain water off the land into the Wyomissing Creek is called the Wyomissing Watershed. The Berks County Conservation District, in partnership with the Municipali- ties of West Reading, Reading, Spring, Shillington, Mohnton, Cumru, and Wyomissing are creating a plan that will identify areas that are important for the future improvements to the health of the Wyomissing Creek, called the Wyomissing Coldwater Conservation Plan. In order to make the plan as thorough as it can be, we need to hear from YOU! Your knowledge, concerns, questions, and comments about the Wyomissing Creek are vitally important to the creation of this plan. If you have questions, please contact Kate O’Brien at the Berks County Conservation District at 610-372-4567. HELP US MANAGE STORM WATER What IS Storm Water? Storm water is water from precipitation that flows across the ground and pavement when it rains or when snow and ice melt. The water seeps into the ground or drains into what we call storm sewers. These are the drains you see at street corners or at low points on the sides of streets. Collectively, the draining water is called storm water runoff. WHY IS Storm Water “GOOD RAIN GONE WRONG?” Storm water becomes a problem when it picks up debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants as it flows or when it causes flooding and erosion of stream banks. Storm water travels through a system of pipes and roadside ditches that make up storm sewer systems. It eventually flows directly to a lake, river, stream, wetland, or coastal water. All of the pollutants storm water carries along the way empty into our waters, too, because storm water does not get treated! • Pet wastes left on the ground get carried away by storm water, contributing harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses to our water. • Vehicles drip fluids (oil, grease, gasoline, antifreeze, brake fluids, etc.) onto paved areas where storm water runoff carries them through our storm drains and into our water. • Chemicals used to grow and maintain beautiful lawns and gardens, if not used properly, can run off into the storm drains when it rains or when we water our lawns and gardens. DUCKLING RESCUE IN THOMAS GARDENS The mixed rural and urban nature of Cumru Township is epitomized by an annual rite of spring for the Public Works Department: rescu- ing baby birds. Every year, Township staff receives at least one call for help to retrieve hatchlings that have fallen down a storm drain. In May of 2011, six baby turkeys, called poults, fell through a grate along Candy Road. The highway crew called out heavy equipment to move the grate as the mother hen nervously patrolled the area. This April, 11 ducklings fell into a catch basin along Barrington Dr. in Thomas Gardens. The sewer crew was able to rescue all of the ducklings, including this vocal specimen. If you find any animals trapped in storm sewars please cotnact our Public works Department at (610)777-1343. building a better community of you! 3 township OF CUMRU INTERESTED IN SERVING IN YOUR COMMUNITY? Hamid is a husband and father, a Cumru resident, a local business man, and a philanthropist with a very charitable heart. Owner of the Kenhorst and Exeter Dairy Queen’s, as well as, the recently open Mustang Grill, Hamid has found success and satisfaction in not only working hard to grow his business ventures, but also to give back to the community he lives and works in. He has certainly found his niche and has become a vital part of our community. Specifi- cally in Cumru, he has been active in the past on a few of our boards and commissions, has helped support our recreational programming, and has helped support our fire departments with a number of fundraising and recruitment efforts. Hamid is a friend of the Township, and certainly deserving of this award.
