Nigel Stark - conductor Saturday 20 June 2015 at 7.30 pm St. Mary’s Church, Warwick I suppose I have heard Rachmaninov’s Second Warwick Summer Music Festival Roger Coull Symphony seven or eight times, always with Concert professional orchestras, the WSO’s performance Overture Ruslan and Ludmila Glinka knocked me sideways …….. It achieved perhaps Violin Concerto No 1 in G minor Bruch the object of performance; the music ceased to David le Page - violin be the notes and became the experience. Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) Tchaikovsky Robin Taylor - concert goer Roger Coull - guest conductor David le Page, leader of the Orchestra of the Swan, makes his debut with the WSO as soloist in one of the finest romantic works for violin and orchestra. The stunningly energetic but often neglected Glinka overture opens the concert and the last of Tchaikovsky’s three greatest symphonies, crowns this fascinating programme.

Under Roger Coull’s empathetic and knowledgeable baton, the WSO delivered plenty of fire in Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2. This performance ranks as one of the WSO’s very best, surpassing their memorable performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12 in 2010.
