Women’s Hockey History 2018-2019 Regular Season Record: 18-3-3 (1st in OUA) OUA Playoff Record: 5-0 (OUA Champions – defeated Toronto 4-2 in McCaw Cup) Playoff Record: 3-0 (U SPORTS Champions – defeated McGill 1-0 in gold medal game in Charlottetown, PEI)

The Gryphons have been the class of the OUA in recent years but the 2018/19 team would make history. Guelph was motivated from the moment the puck dropped on the new season with fifth-year team pillars captain Kaitlin Lowy and goaltender Valerie Lamenta intent on ending their careers as champions. The team was simply dominant during the regular season, leading the OUA in both goals scored (79) and allowed (33) en route to a 18-3-3 record. Lowy would lead the team in goals (13) and points (25) with Lamenta posting a 1.52 goals against average and .952 save percentage. But there was much more to come for Guelph, beginning with two-game sweeps of both the and the in the OUA quarters and semis. That set up a McCaw Cup matchup with the at the Gryphon Centre. The hosts trailed 2-1 but scored three unanswered goals in the third period to win the trophy they call “Judy” for the third time in four years. With another OUA banner secured, the Gryphons went to Charlottetown, PEI ready to make a run at a national title. Guelph scored two quick goals and eventually hung on 3-2 to defeat the reigning U SPORTS champion in the quarter-final. The Gryphons struck early and often in the national semi-final to eliminate the Carabins 5-0. And in the national final against the McGill Martlets, the Gryphons would realize their dream. Lowy score the lone goal of the game and Lamenta pitched her fifth shutout in eight postseason starts to lead Guelph to the first national championship in program history. Claire Merrick, who led all players in the country with seven goals in the playoffs, was named team MVP. Lowy was an OUA First-Team All-Star and Lamenta was named to the First Team, while also taking OUA Goaltender of the Year honours. Rachel Flanagan won the OUA Coach of the Year award for the fifth time in seven years.

2017-2018 Season Record: 18-6-0 (2nd in the OUA) Playoff Record: 2-2 (lost to Western in OUA semi-final)

It’s difficult to stay on top. But for two years, the Gryphons were the best team in the OUA, taking back-to-back McCaw Cups in 2016 and 2017. Those banner winners were different in their makeup and as the 2017-18 season got underway, reigning Coach of the Year Rachel Flanagan and her battle-tested players were searching for the defining characteristics of this season’s team. It was balance. The offensively-gifted team could get goals from star captain Kaitlin Lowy, fifth-year veteran Kelly Gribbons and breakout forward Sydney Davison, while blueliners like newcomer Katie Mikkelsen and graduating defenceman Katherine Bailey, in front of OUA goals against average-leading goaltender Valérie Lamenta, kept the puck out at the other end. Guelph’s title defence didn’t start well as the team surprisingly won just one of its first four games. But the Gryphons showed why they were crowned champions the previous two years by winning 12 of the next 13 games. They entered the OUA playoffs on a roll, as Lamenta earned shutouts in the last two regular season games. In the opening round, Guelph was sharp, winning two consecutive one-goal playoff contests to knock out Brock. The Gryphons met Western in the OUA semi- final and fell behind on home ice, losing 1-0 in the series opener. Fighting for their playoff lives in game 2, Guelph got two crucial equalizers from Lowy, who tied for the OUA goal-scoring lead during the season with 15. The 2-2 game ultimately went to double overtime, where Western won it on a sneaky shot from the left wing that found the back of the net. The goal brought an end to the most dominant run in OUA women’s hockey since Laurier’s multiple championships.

Third year forward Kaitlin Lowy finished the regular season 3rd in the OUA in goals (16) and points (29). 1988-1989 It is with sadness and joy that we played our last intercollegiate game in Pigmy Gardens ("University Arena"). The rink dates back to 1914. This rink stood until about 1920 when it collapsed. The rink was rebuilt using the original girders and narrowed by 10 feet/ hence the present arena. To pay for the arena, shares were sold, this was handled by the Co-op. When the rink was paid off, it was sold for $1.00 to the Athletic Board. Artificial ice was put in around 1950 by the students. For a number of years the men's intercollegiate team played their games in this arena and then went on to play downtown. The women have played all their games in this arena. Adieu little arena, it has been fun, we won six O.W.I.A.A. Championships over the years. We look forward, as do the men, to our new twin pad arena opening December 1, 1989.

The women's Ice hockey team qualified for the playoffs again In the OWIAA with a 6-7-3 record which garnered them third place. In a sudden death Semi Final game in Kingston, the team almost pulled off the upset of the year before losing to Queen's 2-1 in triple overtime. 1982-1983 The women's hockey team had an excellent year, with a 15-9 record. The Gryphons lost the semi-final to York in overtime. Only two players graduate this year and coach Scherer feels they should be a good contender next year. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner).

1981-1982 The women's hockey team played giant killer at times, knocking off top teams but having difficulties with lower teams. They barely missed the play- offs by virtue of a 1 - 1 tie at McMaster in the final game of the season. Their final record was 3 - 10 - 3 in fourth place. 1980-1981 The Women's team started the season with almost all freshmen, and by the time the season was over, they were starting to make some noise in the strong league. Next season, with many players returning and a number of new players ready to skate into the line-up, the Gryphons will be making even more noise.
