Some time prior to the beginning of the story, aliens arrived at, and attempted to conquer, the Earth with an army of machine life forms. The last of humanity fled to the moon and counterattacked with an army of androids. The two sides have been fighting this proxy war ever since. The story focuses on three specific members of the android organization, YoRHa, 2B, 9S and A2, as they seek answers and meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. Automata features 26 endings (5 main endings and 21 “joke” endings) and requires the player to replay the game multiple times in order to progress through the entire story. Between these play-throughs, a reframing will occur that grants the player access to insights and information they previously did not have, bringing new light to the true impact of the characters’ (and their own) actions. This format, along with a tendency to lean on the fourth wall, allows the game to deconstruct and reflect on the roles of the hero and the player. -

IMAGERY AND THE INTERPRETATIVE CANONIC POWER OF THE AUDIENCE IN THE MUSIC OF STAR WARS Andrew Filmer, Sanjiv Indran, and Tan Mei Ying Abstract The musical legacy of Star Wars over the past forty years has a distinct place in popular culture, not only in record sales and concerts, but also in connections to a variety of commercial offerings unrelated to the narrative of the films. This study looks at the composition of Star Wars music from multiple angles: how John Williams used the strategies of Wagner and Berlioz to bring characters to musical life, the various parties involved in assigning meaning to melodies, how marketing campaigns become involved in this process, and the role of the audience in determining interpretations. This research continues on the path set forward by the likes of James Buhler and Irena Paulus in analyzing the placement of motives and themes within the narrative of the films. This research also proceeds in a new direction, applying the same methodology to related commercials endorsed within the franchise, with the supplementary support of a survey, to assess the audience’s reception of the motives and themes under study. A key finding of this study is that the perceived meanings of music by an audience may differ from the original intent of the composer. This by itself is common, but what makes Star Wars music distinctive is that it spans decades, and external forces – from audiences to brands jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon – have influenced soundtracks for later films. Essentially, this underlines how the author is not the only actor in the process of defining authenticity, and how an audience – simply through perception and reception – affects the path in which musical composition evolves. -

Williams Date Department of Communication Studies iii Abstract of THE MERE EXPOSURE EFFECT AND IN-GAME ADVERTISING by Mary Helene Strand This thesis explores the effectiveness of the use of in-game advertising for persuasion. The theory of Mere Exposure was used to develop the method and frame the data collection and analysis. For purposes of data collection, 143 participants (73 experimental, 70 control) played either a video game that was modified to expose them to an advertisement, or an unmodified version of the video game. Participants then completed questionnaires regarding recall, product liking, game liking, and video game experience. Statistical analysis showed that placing an advertisement within a video game generates recall of the product or brand embedded. The use of in-game ads, however, did not influence liking of the brand.
