Perjury and False Witness in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages
Perjury and False Witness in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages by Nicholas Brett Sivulka Wheeler A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Nicholas Brett Sivulka Wheeler 2018 Perjury and False Witness in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages Nicholas Brett Sivulka Wheeler Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2018 Abstract This dissertation, ‘Perjury and False Witness in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages’, investigates changing perceptions of perjury and false witness in the late antique and early medieval world. Focusing on primary sources from the Latin-speaking, western Roman empire and former empire, approximately between the late third and seventh centuries CE, this thesis proposes that perjury and false witness were transformed into criminal behaviours, grave sins, and canonical offences in Latin legal and religious writings of the period. Chapter 1, ‘Introduction: The Problem of Perjury’s Criminalization’, calls attention to anomalies in the history and historiography of the oath. Although the oath has been well studied, oath violations have not; moreover, important sources for medieval culture – Roman law and the Christian New Testament – were largely silent on the subject of perjury. For classicists in particular, perjury was not a crime, while oath violations remained largely peripheral to early Christian ethical discussions. Chapter 2, ‘Criminalization: Perjury and False Witness in Late Roman Law’, begins to explain how this situation changed by documenting early possible instances of penalization for perjury. Diverse sources such as Christian martyr acts, provincial law manuals, and select imperial ii and post-imperial legislation suggest that numerous cases of perjury were criminalized in practice. -
Millennials and the Future of Magazines
MILLENNIALS AND THE FUTURE OF MAGAZINES: HOW THE GENERATION OF DIGITAL NATIVES WILL DETERMINE WHETHER PRINT MAGAZINES SURVIVE by ELIZABETH MARGARET BONNER CHRIS ROBERTS, COMMITTEE CHAIR DIANNE BRAGG, COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR MARGOT LAMME A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Journalism in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2015 Copyright Elizabeth Margaret Bonner 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In today’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem, two important narratives emerge: the demise of print publishing and the rise of the Millennial generation—the digital natives—as media consumers. In the midst of the persistent discussion that print journalism is dying in this era of digital revolution, data and literature suggest that many magazines are thriving, particularly with Millennials. This discovery, while noteworthy given its direct contradiction to the popular belief that Millennials have forsaken traditional media, is where knowledge pertaining to this phenomenon is prematurely truncated. This study seeks to contribute to a greater understanding of the motivations behind these quantitative conclusions by giving voice to Millennials’ reasons for continued magazine consumption in a way that the available data from closed-response surveys and questionnaires has not. Through a mixed-methods study grounded in uses and gratifications theory, utilizing a preliminary survey and subsequently concentrating on a qualitative design built around focus groups with Millennials (ages 18-25), this work seeks to reveal how this instrumental demographic—the industry’s audience for the years to come and the population whose lives have been most immersed in digital technologies—feels about magazines. -
Thesis the Complicitous Salute: Silencing Female
THESIS THE COMPLICITOUS SALUTE: SILENCING FEMALE SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. MILITARY Submitted by Sarah James Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2015 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Thomas R. Dunn Karrin Anderson Catherine Steele Copyright by Sarah James 2015 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE COMPLICITOUS SALUTE: SILENCING FEMALE SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE U.S. MILITARY Driven by growing concerns about sexual assault in the U.S. military and public questioning of current reporting procedures, this thesis examines why female military assault survivors do not come forward and report the crimes committed against them. More specifically, I argue that sexual assault in the U.S. military goes underreported and ignored due in part to the military’s culture of masculinity, silence, and complicity. To make sense of this military culture and the attendant discourse surrounding sexual assaults, I study two rhetoric texts through a critical rhetoric perspective. My first text consists of meaningful fragments of mediated public address centered on news coverage of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and her proposed legislation to reform military sexual assault: the Military Justice Improvement Act. My second text is a fictional narrative of similar military sexual assault legislation in the Netflix series House of Cards. Through my analysis, I consider my texts using a critique of domination and a critique of freedom to demonstrate how public discourse about sexual assault and its reporting challenges the hegemonic structure. In doing so, I employ an examination of critical rhetoric to expose a text’s possibility for social change. -

Davidson for SENIOR THESIS Fall 2014 December 1st, 2014 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS House of Cards as a dramatized portrayal of the American legislative process was a fascinating study for my senior thesis. As a dual major of Government and Film Studies, it was a perfect blend of content, subject matter, and Hollywood mixed together. I would like to thank Professor John Pitney for suggesting this research topic and turning me onto what is now one of my favorite shows. This thesis would not have become a reality without your advice and guidance. I would also like to thank Executive Story Editor Melissa James Gibson and Co- Executive Producer John Mankiewicz of House of Cards for agreeing to be interviewed for this thesis. What a rare opportunity for me it was to gain insight and vision into this show and its portrayal of politics in Washington. -
