Message from the President

The year 2014‐2015 at our High School campus (LCHS) opened with the major event of the grand opening of our new facilities on September 9, 2014. Dignitaries attending included the Minister of Education, the Honourable Don Morgan, past presidents Morris Anderson and Richard Hordern as well as major donors Merlis Belsher (HS’53) and Gavin Semple (HS’63) and many other friends and alumni of the school. The new facilities were ready for the opening of school and there was a great spirit of celebration as old and new friends explored and experienced a refurbished Luther College High School (LCHS). Chapel continued to be held in the old gym, now called the Merlis Belsher Heritage Centre, though the configuration was different and soon thought to be better as students faced the stage and gathered on three sides of the central speaker, usually our new chaplain, Rev. David Peterson. Students were excited to use all the facilities but the Student Commons turned out to be a particularly exciting new addition for the students of LCHS.

Fund‐raising for these new facilities continued with the capital campaign ATime to Build. At the end of June, 2015, over $10.5M had been raised towards the $13.5M goal. Dedicated volunteers and staff continue to work towards the goal that will ensure the school is not burdened with an onerous debt in future years.

As the finishing touches were being put on the facilities, a fire occurred in the kitchen, caused by needed renovations to the duct work in the kitchen. This necessitated alternate cooking arrangements in the form of a kitchen trailer until March. Mike Stobbs and his kitchen staff endured the extra work most admirably, continuing to serve appetizing and healthy meals to our students.

On January 23, 2015, a parents’ group at Luther College High School hosted the first ever ‘Black and Gold Gala’ meant to both raise funds and promote fellowship among the parents and friends of Luther College. Over 175 people attended and because of the superb organization of the parents, over $40,000 was raised for the new furniture in the Student Commons. The parent organizers themselves enjoyed their time organizing the gala and are committed to making this an annual event.

The LCHS strategic plan at the LCHS campus continued to unfold with major work accomplished in the area of faculty professional development, determining and enhancing the place of the IB program in the College’s academic offerings and developing the position of Athletic Director with a renewed emphasis on the sports teams and wellness aspect of the College. The Senior Leadership Team also worked hard at determining how to maximize the use of the new facilities. Security was determined to be an issue with the new facilities but money and worktime was set aside for the summer of 2015 to ensure this aspect of the LCHS operation was addressed.

Luther College, Regina. Annual Report 2014‐2015 3

At the University campus (LCUR), having had the strategic plan “Meeting the Challenges of a 21st Century Liberal Arts College” approved by our Board in June of 2014, work began on its first year of implementation. Teams were formed around themes like academic programming, student programming, student diversity, capacity building, marketing, recruiting and physical plant.

With money received from the Ministry of Advanced Education to remove the asbestos in our residence, a plan to renovate the forty‐four year old structure was approved by the Board. The renovation is expected to be finished by Christmas, 2016 and involves new windows, new heating systems, new furniture, new showers and a host of aesthetic improvements like carpeting and lighting. The College also engaged a marketing firm to help develop a plan for the College who, like all other liberal arts colleges in Canada, is suffering from declining enrolments. The marketing plan was approved by the Board in June and key messages as well as significant aspects of the plan will be rolled out in the fall of 2015. In an effort to ensure that students know that our Christian context involves being hospitable to all students, gender neutral washrooms were dedicated by our chaplain in the spring of 2015.

A search for a new, permanent chaplain at the LCUR campus was initiated in the spring of 2015. After interviewing four very strong finalists, the position was offered to Pastor Sean Bell who will begin in August of 2015. His crew of dedicated peer chaplains will help, most of whom have been in place for three years, to ease the transition for him and the College. With the retirement of Mary Jesse, our long‐serving and incredibly dedicated Registrar, a search was initiated by Dean Greifenhagen. Again, after interviewing a strong slate of finalists, the position was offered to Tatum Cruise who will begin her position in the summer of 2015.

Our Board was very active also. Two more Regents completed training sponsored by the Ministry of Advanced Education, joining three other Regents in becoming certified Professional Directors. An Enterprise Risk Management policy, inventory and registry were developed and approved by the end of June, 2015 filling a key gap indicated by the Ministry’s governance policy inventory a year earlier. Human resource policies regarding the hiring of senior management were also approved. Finally, our Governance Committee initiated a study regarding what alternatives there were to what constitutes our corporate membership. For now, it was determined that we are best to stay with the current legislation wherein our membership is constituted by that of the national convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). In this regard, the Board also approved a memorandum of understanding that would see further meaningful and mutually beneficial collaboration between Luther College and the ELCIC.

Luther College, Regina. Annual Report 2014‐2015 4

The year was a busy year with many accomplishments by our hard‐working staff and faculty. This annual report gives me a chance to express my appreciation to all those who have worked so hard for the sake of our students as well as the well‐being and future of our College. I include in this number our volunteer Board who puts in so many hours of deliberation and continues to amaze me with their creative and strategic thinking. As well, our thanks go out to all our alumni and friends who continue to support the College and make it a living embodiment of God’s work of grace among us.

Blessings to all who read this,

President Bryan Hillis, Ph.D. Luther College, Regina, Saskatchewan

CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools)

As part of Luther’s continual pursuit of excellence, the process of Luther College High School joining the CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools), which is often described as a “community of the best schools in Canada,” began in the fall of 2014. Becoming a member school of CAIS would better position Luther to protect and enrich the school’s reputation as a century‐old historic institution that provides a “quality education in a Christian Context.” David Keeping, Director of Special Projects & Business Development, was assigned the role of CAIS Coordinator. Two representatives from CAIS visited the High School in June 2015 as a first step in assessing and approving Luther’s application to join CAIS.

High School Chaplaincy

Pastor David Peterson has completed his first year of working at LCHS. Much of this year has been an orientation to the different committees including Senior Leadership; Academic and Advising and the Board. Pastor David has been grateful to Pastor Larry Fry for his good advice and direction which has helped the transition immensely. Pastor David has participated in many of the school events throughout the year including information nights and student‐focused activities. The chaplain regularly connects with the Administration to keep abreast of events and concerns.

Much of this year’s energy has been spent in his first year of solo teaching. This involved familiarizing himself with the existing Christian Ethics 30 (CETH 30) material and resources and adapting them. The course focused on several themes including a basic understanding of ethics, Jesus’ ethics as portrayed in his parables and actions as well as societal ethical issues such as justice. This coming year will include designing a specially tailored CETH 30 course that will accompany the upcoming El Salvador trip in early 2016. This course will focus on issues such as poverty and wealth and more internationally relevant concerns such as fair trade economies.

The chaplain has on several occasions supported Pro‐D days with short reflections and meditations. In addition to prayers and scripture provided at ceremonial occasions (e.g. Candlelight Service), worship opportunities were made available to staff and faculty during Advent and Lent with early Friday morning communion. The chaplain has focused on an inclusive form of Chapel worship to support the many beliefs and

spiritual traditions at the School. One approach has been to find common ground through a focus on the Golden Rule, mutual respect, justice and community building. Guests have been welcome to speak in chapel and this will continue – hoping to broaden the scope to include different spiritual traditions.

Alumni Relations, Development & Communications

ALUMNI RELATIONS

The Alumni Relations office at the High School aims to engage alumni, parents and friends of the College within the Luther community. We strive to develop meaningful, impactful and lifelong relationships between Luther and its multi‐generational alumni. University Chaplaincy

Pastor Scott Adams, an ordained Lutheran pastor (ELCA) from Green Bay, Wisconsin, was hired as the Interim Chaplain/Campus Pastor in August 2014 for a three‐year term. There were four peer chaplains, up from three in the previous year, for the 2014‐2015 academic year and included James Hills, Joshua Hendricksen, Jess Kelly, and Katie Ottley. The peer chaplains assisted Pastor Scott with the following chaplaincy programming: hosting weekly chapel services (Tuesday Time‐Outs and Sunday Worship), Advent Service of Lessons & Carols, Children’s Christmas Worship and Party, Theology Off Tap, Soul Creations, and the Clergy Lunch.

Luther’s Chaplaincy partnership with Campion was as strong as ever and included jointly hosting the Giving Thanks Lunch, Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and Fair Trade Fair (along with the University of Regina). There was also an additional effort to partner with other groups campus‐wide, particularly URSU and Engineers w/o Borders on fair trade and advocacy as well as TransSask and UR Pride.

Plans are to have five peer chaplains in 2015‐2016 (three of whom are returning Christian peer chaplains) with the addition for the first time of two Muslim peer chaplains. This represents a great step forward in Luther’s work to be an open and affirming multi‐faith community.

COMMUNICATIONS

Social Media The University campus’s social media continued to grow with 561 fans (likes) on the LCUR Facebook page and 261 following LCUR on Twitter.

Viewbook

The LCUR viewbook was updated and printed for the 2014‐2015 academic year highlighting why Luther?, four ways students can benefit from Luther, who should choose Luther, academic programs including those offered by Luther, living in the Luther Residence, and Luther’s Studentsfirst and Chaplaincy programming.

Branding and Marketing ARCAS Advertising was hired in February 2015 to develop and deliver a report on 1) a competitive analysis and stakeholder consultations for Luther College at the University of Regina (LCUR), 2) marketing strategy – in alignment with a succinct brand strategy – and 3) a three‐year implementation plan. Following a competitive analysis, ARCAS engaged LCUR stakeholders including Board of Regents, LCUR Senior Leadership Team, LCUR Faculty & Staff, and Luther and non‐Luther students in discovery sessions to gather feedback required to develop LCUR’s Brand Identity. The LCUR Brand Strategy, including Brand Proposition Statements formed by ARCAS, is the basis of the LCUR Marketing Strategy, and involved the development of a creative platform and implementation of a three‐year Marketing Plan or “Recruitment Campaign” through a number of communication approaches.

In June 2015, work began on the development of a creative platform and redeveloping Luther’s viewbook, new photography for the viewbook and website, revision of website and social media content, and templates for advertising across all mediums. The launch of the three‐year LCUR Recruitment Campaign will be in September 2015.

The evening is named in recognition of all those people, past and present, who have participated in the establishment and growth of the College.

Luther College, Regina. Annual Report 2014‐2015 24

On Thursday, November 6, 2014, over 120 friends, alumni, faculty and staff of the College gathered in the new Student Commons area at Luther College High School (LCHS) to celebrate the College’s donors and supporters. The evening began with Dr. Franzvolker Greifenhagen, Dean of Luther College’s University campus (LCUR), welcoming everyone, followed by greetings from Bishop Sid Haugen on behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), and grace by Pastor David Peterson, LCHS Chaplain. After a delectable meal served by Mike Stobbs, Manager of Food Services at LCHS, and his staff, Dr. Bryan Hillis, President of Luther College, provided an update on the state of the College. During dessert, musical entertainment was provided by Joshua Hendricksen (HS’08), alumnus of LCHS and second year Fine Arts student at LCUR.

The pinnacle of the evening was the recognition of the thirty‐four donors entering a new cumulative lifetime giving level and the presentation of the 2014 Distinguished Service Award posthumously to Rein and Ella Sommerfeld, accepted on their behalf by their son, Eric Sommerfeld (HS’70, U’79), and daughter, Ruth (Sommerfeld) Dempsey (HS’74).
