There is always some flaw in it, some defect. First Sightings For all the attention paid to the “interview” scene in Benjamin Britten’s opera Billy Budd, its musical depths have proved remarkably resistant to analysis and have remained unplumbed. This striking passage of thirty-four whole-note chords has probably attracted more comment than any other in the opera since Andrew Porter first spotted shortly after the 1951 premiere that all the chords harmonize members of the F major triad, leading to much discussion over whether or not the passage is “in F major.” 1 Beyond Porter’s perception, the structure was far from obvious, perhaps in some way unprecedented, and has remained mysterious. Indeed, it is the undisputed gnomic power of its strangeness that attracted (and still attracts) most comment. Arnold Whittall has shown that no functional harmonic or contrapuntal explanation of the passage is satisfactory, and proceeded from there to make the interesting assertion that that was the point: The “creative indecision”2 that characterizes the music of the opera was meant to confront the listener with the same sort of difficulty as the layers of irony in Herman Melville’s “inside narrative,” on which the opera is based. To quote a single sentence of the original story that itself contains several layers of ironic ambiguity, a sentence thought by some—I believe mistakenly—to say that Vere felt no remorse: 1. -

ABSTRACT WHY WE TURN THE PAGE: A LITERARY THEORY OF DYNAMIC STRUCTURALISM Justin J. J. Ness, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2019 David J. Gorman, Director This study claims that every narrative text intrinsically possesses a structure of fixed relationships among its interest components. The progress of literary structuralism gave more attention to the static nature of what a narrative is than it did to the dynamic nature of how it operates. This study seeks to build on the work of those few theorists who have addressed this general oversight and to contribute a more comprehensive framework through which literary critics may better chart the distinct tensions that a narrative text cultivates as it proactively produces interest to motivate a reader’s continued investment therein. This study asserts that the interest in narrative is premised on three affects— avidity, anxiety, and curiosity—and that tensions within the text are developed through five components of discourse: event, description, dialog, sequence, and presentation. Lane May 2010 ABSTRACT Octatonic Formations, Motivic Correspondences, and Symbolism in Alwa’s Hymne: The Conclusion of Lulu, Act II A thesis presented to the Department of Musicology Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Alexander G. Lane In this study of the final number from Act II of Alban Berg’s Lulu, I examine Alwa’s Hymne from three different perspectives. First, I analyze the Hymne as if it were a free-standing composition. In this portion of the paper, I enumerate the tone-rows and motives out of which the Hymne is constructed and I discuss how these basic materials are related to each other. I place special emphasis on the multiple roles which the octatonic collection plays in this number: it functions as a subset of twelve-note formations, as a superset encompassing shorter motives, and as an agent of harmonic and melodic coherence in those sections of the Hymne that are not governed by twelve-tone sets. In this part of the paper, I also discuss the ways in which the text and the music of the Hymne may help to clarify the nature of Alwa’s relationship with Lulu. In the second section of this study, I examine the Hymne’s relation to other parts of the Lulu. -

November 6, 2018 To the Board of Directors of The Voice Foundation, This is a letter of interest in the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship, to be awarded in 2019. As I look through the bullet points to be included in this document, it’s clear to me that what I should really be submitting is simply a thank-you note, since attending the Annual Symposium has comprehensively re-shaped me as a vocal pedagogue since I began attending four years ago. The singers I teach (at the University of Missouri, and as of this year, at the Jacobs School of Music at IU-Bloomington) are music majors ranging from freshmen to young professionals, c. 18-26 years old. The freshmen arrive having had some introductory experience with vocal instruction, but are basically wide-open to the unknown. They leave after their first lesson knowing what vowel formants are and where they are located, understanding the contribution of harmonics to an expressive vocal color, and demonstrating a solid rudimentary understanding of resonance strategies (including divergence and off-resonance, aka inertance). I’ve been diligent in streamlining this information; I want them to gain fluency in these concepts before they even think twice. The rapidity with which these talented students assimilate a paradigm so squarely founded on acoustics and physiology is inspiring, and very exciting. As recently as three years ago, I felt obliged to defend the validity of these ideas, and my qualifications to present them as established fact. Now, that defensive stance (at least with these superlative students) is already obsolete. -

Pianist REIKO UCHIDA enjoys an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. Der halb verminderte Septakkord tauchte im 19. Jahrhundert als bedeutende eigen standige Hannonie und als Angelpunkt bei der chromatischen Modulation auf, bekam aber eine besondere symbolische Bedeutung durch seine Verwendung als Motiv in Wagners Tristan und Isolde. Seit der Premiere der Oper im Jahre 1865 lafit sich fast 100 Jahre lang die besondere Entfaltung des sogenannten Tristan-Akkords in dramatischen Werken veifolgen, die ihn als Emblem fUr Liebe und Tod verwenden. In Alban Bergs Lyrischer Suite und Lulu erreicht der Tristan-Akkord vielleicht seine hOchste emblematische Ausdruckskraft nach Wagner. If Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in general, and its Prelude in particular, have stood for more than a century as the defining work that liberated tonal chro maticism from its diatonic foundations of the century before it, then there is a particular focus within the entire chromatic conception that is so well known that it even has a name: the Tristan chord. This is the chord that occurs on the downbeat of the second measure of the opera. Considered enharmonically, tills chord is of course a familiar structure, described in many textbooks as a half diminished seventh chord. It is so called because it can be partitioned into a diminished triad and a minor triad; our example shows it in comparison with a minor seventh chord and an ordinary diminished seventh chord.
