A Ch’an adept aims directly at the mind, attaining Buddhahood by seeing one’s own nature. Ch’an masters use humor in their speech and treat people with kindness. They do not like to present a stern face. Sometimes, when they talk about east, they are actually pointing west. Sometimes, when they strike or scold a student, they are actually expressing their loving kindness. Whereas a scholar of Yogacara employs ample verbal explanation to expound on the doctrine of Master Tao-ming picked up a sugar cookie, broke it idealism, a Ch’an practitioner only has to say ‘A in two, and asked, “The three worlds are nothing sugar cookie,” and the underlying implications but the mind’s manifestation; the ten thousand are conveyed. Both religious leaders not only survived persecution, but brought their faiths to greater heights. This paper studies how these masters adapted Chan Buddhist teachings to the woes and conditions of their times. In particular, I shall review how yixuan and Hsing yun adapted the teachings of their predecessors, added value to the socio-political milieu of their times, and used familiar language to reconcile reality and their beliefs. Background These two Chan masters were selected because of the significance of their contributions. Hsing Yun, a very strong proponent ofHumanistic Buddhism, is currently the recipient of ls honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world (Shi and Weng 2015). To have received such accolades, both Chan masters ought to have made momentous contribution to their societies. Although Yixuan and Hsing Yun had humble beginnings, they were well-grounded in Buddhist teachings.

  • BUDDHISM, MEDITATION, and the NEGOTIATION of the PUBLIC SPHERE by Leana Marie Rudolph a Capstone Project Submitted for Graduatio
BUDDHISM, MEDITATION, AND THE NEGOTIATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE By Leana Marie Rudolph A capstone project submitted for Graduation with University Honors May 20, 2021 University Honors University of California, Riverside APPROVED Dr. Matthew King Department of Religious Studies Dr. Richard Cardullo, Howard H Hays Jr. Chair University Honors ABSTRACT This capstone serves to map and gather the oral histories of formerly undocumented Buddhist communities pertaining to their lived experiences in the Inland Empire. The ethnographic fieldwork conducted of 11 sites over the period of 12 months explored the intersection of diaspora, economy, and religious affiliation. This research begins to explore this junction by undertaking a qualitative and quantitative study that will map Buddhist life in the Inland Empire today. It will include interviews, providing oral histories, and will be accessible through a GIS map, helping Religious Studies and Anthropologist scholars to locate these sites and have background information on these locations. The Inland Empire represents many heavily populated, post-agricultural, and manufacturing areas in America today, which since the 1970s and especially since 2008 has suffered from many economic and social crises related to suburban poverty, as well as waves of demographic changes. Taking the Inland Empire as a petri dish for broader trends at the intersection of religion, economy, and the social in the American public sphere today, this capstone project hopes to determine how Buddhism forms at these intersections, what new stories about life in the Inland Empire Buddhist sites and communities help illuminate, and what forms of digital interfacing best brings anthropological analyses to the publics it examines.

  • Mann Honors Thesis Final
CONTINUING POLITICAL FORCE OF RELICS IN THE MODERN ASIAN SOCIETY: THE BUDDHA’S TOOTH RELIC AT FOGUANGSHAN Stacy Mann 11220046 [email protected] Prof. Benjamin Brose Asian 395 – Honors Thesis December 5th 2011 i CONTINUING POLITICAL FORCE OF RELICS IN THE MODERN ASIAN SOCIETY: THE BUDDHA’S TOOTH RELIC AT FOGUANGSHAN Introduction Some scholars have suggested that as Buddhism moved into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, where there were many international connections and a spread of western ideas and science, it will became more separate from the state. Scholars such as Thomas DuBois, Mayfair Yang, and Vincent Goosaert have all discussed the move toward a more secularized state in Modern China, especially under the rule of the communist party, who viewed religion as an exploitative institution. Even before the period of Communist rule in China, when the nationalist party, the Guomindang (國民黨), controlled China, there was a move away from religions and religious practices that were seen as “superstitious”. After the Guomindang moved to Taiwan, they regulated religion, and tried to eliminate the participation of religion into public arenas, such as politics. These ideas suggest a move away from any “superstitious” practice, and a move toward a secularized state that may seek to control the religious organizations, but will not allow them any part in their government.1 Yet while I was studying in the South of Taiwan in 2010 I visited the Foguangshan monastery (佛光山寺) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. There I was informed of and had the chance to see a tooth relic of the Historical Buddha, the Buddha who lived in India two thousand four hundred years ago.

Sometimes this task is made difficult not by lack of gratitude nor lack of reason for it. Rather, we are occasionally fortunate enough to have more gratitude than words can contain. Such is the case when I consider the contributions of my advisor, Jeffrey Wattles, who went far beyond his obligations in the preparation of this document. From the beginning, his nurturing presence has fueled the process of exploration, allowing me to follow my truth, rather than persuading me to support his.

  • American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter
CHAPTER FO U R American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter ★ he Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated for weeks on end in Los Angeles. TMore than three hundred Buddhist temples sit in this great city fac- ing the Pacific, and every weekend for most of the month of May the Buddha’s Birthday is observed somewhere, by some group—the Viet- namese at a community college in Orange County, the Japanese at their temples in central Los Angeles, the pan-Buddhist Sangha Council at a Korean temple in downtown L.A. My introduction to the Buddha’s Birthday observance was at Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, just east of Los Angeles. It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere, built by Chinese Buddhists hailing originally from Taiwan and advocating a progressive Humanistic Buddhism dedicated to the pos- itive transformation of the world. In an upscale Los Angeles suburb with its malls, doughnut shops, and gas stations, I was about to pull over and ask for directions when the road curved up a hill, and suddenly there it was— an opulent red and gold cluster of sloping tile rooftops like a radiant vision from another world, completely dominating the vista. The ornamental gateway read “International Buddhist Progress Society,” the name under which the temple is incorporated, and I gazed up in amazement. This was in 1991, and I had never seen anything like it in America. The entrance took me first into the Bodhisattva Hall of gilded images and rich lacquerwork, where five of the great bodhisattvas of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition receive the prayers of the faithful.
