Cox said people in his area had wanted it as a way to move toward a greener, more health- conscious lifestyle. “It’s about becoming progressive,” Cox said. “It’s also to access freshly laid eggs. Not many people have applied yet, so I don’t think it’s going to be too excessive.” J.K. Yarborough, a professor at the University of Florida with the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the consultant on Livestock and Natural Research for Orange and Seminole counties, teaches a class on how to prepare for hav- ing backyard chickens. He said people had a multitude of reasons for having chick- ens. “People getting into chickens want the eggs, and having three or four hens can produce a good supply,” he said. “It’s also a unique pet that not everyone has. It’s a good companion pet. And the compost, you can apply to your garden. It’s like a Swiss Army Chicken.” But he said there were risks, too, particularly of diseases like Merrick’s Disease and Newcastle Disease which could affect chickens.
