    China’s Past, China’s Future China has a population of 1.3 billion people, which puts strain on her natural resources. Bidelman,1 Charles R. Cowley,2 and Donald G. Luttermoser3 Abstract. U Antliae is one of the brightest carbon stars in the southern sky. It is classified as an N0 carbon star and an Lb irregular variable. This star has a very unique spectrum and is thought to be in a transition stage from an asymptotic giant branch star to a planetary nebula. This paper discusses possi- ble atomic and molecular line identifications for features seen in high-dispersion spectra of this star at wavelengths from 4975 A˚ through 8780 A.˚ 1. Introduction U Antliae (U Ant = HR 4153 = HD 91793) is classified as an N0 carbon star with a visual magnitude of 5.38 and B−V of +2.88 (Hoffleit 1982). It also is classified as an Lb irregular variable with small scale light variations. Scattered light optical images for U Ant have been made and these observations are consistent the existence of a geometrically thin (∼3 arcsec) spherically symmetric shell of radius ∼43 arcsec. The size of this shell agrees very well with that of the detached shell seen in CO radio line emission. These observations also show the presence of at least one, possibly two, shells inside the 43 arcsec shell (Gonz´alez Delgado et al. 2001). In this paper, absorption lines in the optical spectrum of U Ant are tentatively identified for this bright cool carbon star.

I grew up in Denmark in the 1950s, a time when Europe was healing the wounds after the ravages of the Second World War. Already at the age of 7 I had fallen in love with astronomy, but information was very hard to come by in those days, so I scraped together what I could, mainly relying on the local library. At some point I was introduced to the magazine Sky and Telescope, and soon invested my pocket money in a subscription. Every month I would sit at our dining room table with a dictionary and work my way through the latest issue. In one issue I read about Herbig-Haro objects, and I was completely mesmerized that these objects could be signposts of the formation of stars, and I dreamt about some day being able to contribute to this field of study.

Cannon1 Royal Observatory, Edinburgh Received 1982 August 10; accepted 1982 December 6 ABSTRACT Spectra at ~ 4 À resolution have been obtained with the SIT vidicon detector on the CTIO 4 m telescope’s Ritchey-Chretien spectrograph for 11 dwarfs (B -18.2 mag) and five brighter stars (2?~16 mag) in NGC 104 (47 Tue, C0021-723). A range of CN strengths is observed among subgiant and dwarf stars of otherwise very similar spectra. The spectroscopic results are combined with photometric data to argue that some, if not all, of the dwarfs have the same temperature. Spectrum synthesis calculations are then used to infer that the observed range of CN strengths could be produced by a star-to-star range of nitrogen abundances of ~ 5. This result is in accord with a previous analysis based upon much lower resolution data. The range inferred is similar to that required to explain observations of highly evolved stars in 47 Tue. Kühr and G. Schmidt. These were used to determine the integrated rotation measures of 18 sources, 15 of which had never been measured previ- ously, which hindered analysis of the intrinsic polarization properties of objects in the complete sample. These measurements make it possible to correct the observed orientations of the linear polarizations of these sources for the effect of Faraday rotation. The most probable origin for Faraday rotation in these objects is the Galactic interstellar medium. In this paper, we apply the efficient manifold ranking algorithm to search for carbon stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) pilot survey, whose performance and robustness are verified comprehensively with four test experiments. Using this algorithm, we find a total of 183 carbon stars, and 158 of them are new findings. According to different spectral features, our carbon stars are classified as 58 C-H stars, 11 C-H star candidates, 56 C-R stars, ten C-R star candidates, 30 C-N stars, three C-N star candidates, and four C-J stars.

The goal of the conference is to share the different views from different research communities by balancing contributions from different categories and to encourage collaborations between researchers across the Globe. Faint (20 <g< 22) candidate blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars were selected using the deep, but wide, multi-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry. Follow-up spectroscopy for these A-type stars was performed using the VLT-FORS2 instrument. We classify stars according to their Balmer line profiles, and find 7 are bona fide BHB stars and 31 are blue stragglers (BS). Owing to the magnitude range of our sample, even the intrinsically fainter BS stars can reach out to D ∼ 90 kpc. We complement this sample of A-type stars with intrinsically brighter, intermediate-age, asymptotic giant branch stars.
