Statue of Liberty Natl. Monument new york city When George Washington was inaugurated at Federal Hall on April 30, 1789, New York City was already more than 100 years old; its population, however, was less than 35,000. Much of Island was still farmland; but within sight of the grazing cattle stood the old City Hall, where momentous events that shaped American his tory had. happened: John Peter Zenger's trial, marking a victory in the struggle for freedom of the press; the Stamp Act Congress, the first organized opposition to British "taxation without representation"; the Second Continental Congress, which called the Federal Constitutional Conven tion; and later the First Congress under the Constitution which adopted the Bill of Rights. Nearly eight miles to the north of City Hall, on the brow of a hill in what is now called Harlem, Alexander Hamilton built the only home he ever owned. The Grange, now located on Convent Avenue near 141st St., was Hamilton's residence from 1802 to 1804, when the first Secretary of the Treasury fell mortally wounded in a duel with Aaron Burr. Not far from Federal Hall, at the foot of Manhattan, is Castle Clinton, built on the eve of the War of 1812 to help protect the city against British attack. The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor rests on a star-shaped fort that was a part of the same defense system. By the time Theodore Roosevelt was born on East 20th St. in 1858, New York City was a metropolis of nearly a million people and even then the proverbial melting pot of nationalities, races, and religions. The city has consis tently played a major role in the development of the nation. Today, the National Park Service preserves some of the historic sites that mark this progress: Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, Sagamore Hill, and General Grant National Memorial, in addition to the others mentioned. To the east of New York City, on Long Island, the National Park Service administers the last remaining coastal wilderness near the densely populated area—Fire Island National Seashore, 32 miles of nature-shaped beach.
