IV. PARISH APOSTOLATE: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LOCAL CHURCH by John E. Rybolt, C.M. Beginning with the original contract establishing the Community, 17 April 1625, Vincentians have worked in parishes. At fIrst they merely assisted diocesan pastors, but with the foundation at Toul in 1635, the fIrst outside of Paris, they assumed local pastorates. Saint Vincent himself had been the pastor of Clichy-Ia-Garenne near Paris (1612-1625), and briefly (1617) of Buenans and Chatillon les-Dombes in the diocese of Lyons. Later, as superior general, he accepted eight parish foundations for his community. He did so with some misgiving, however, fearing the abandonment of the country poor. A letter of 1653 presents at least part of his outlook: ., .parishes are not our affair. We have very few, as you know, and those that we have have been given to us against our will, or by our founders or by their lordships the bishops, whom we cannot refuse in order not to be on bad terms with them, and perhaps the one in Brial is the last that we will ever accept, because the further along we go, the more we fmd ourselves embarrassed by such matters. l In the same spirit, the early assemblies of the Community insisted that parishes formed an exception to its usual works. The assembly of 1724 states what other Vincentian documents often said: Parishes should not ordinarily be accepted, but they may be accepted on the rare occasions when the superior general .. , [and] his consul tors judge it expedient in the Lord.2 229 Beginnings to 1830 The founding document of the Community's mission in the United States signed by Bishop Louis Dubourg, Fathers Domenico Sicardi and Felix De Andreis, spells out their attitude toward parishes in the new world, an attitude differing in some respects from that of the 1724 assembly. -

The first members of the Congregation of the Mission in North America, apart from one French confrere who worked tem- porarily in Canada before the French Revo- lution, reached the shores of Maryland in 1816. They were the priests Felix De Andreis, Joseph Rosati, John Baptist Acquaroni,' to- gether with Brother Martin Blanka, and nine students, novices, and candidates. This paper will present some brief notes on the lives, character, and impact of two of these pioneers, De Andreis and Rosati. I have also included John Timon, who brought Reverend forward the legacy of those pioneers to a John E. Rybolt, C.M. second generation.2 Felix De Andreis Biography The saintly Felix De Andreis was born in the beautiful mountain town of Demonte in the foothills of the Alps, 12 December 1778. His middle-class family saw to his education possibly to have him continue the professional careers of his father or brothers. -

Webre 6542 Winnebago Street St. Louis, MO 63109 [email protected] Father Bertrand (Bernard) Martial, a priest from Bordeaux, France, served under bishops in four dioceses on two continents and was closely connected with important events in the dioceses of Bordeaux, Bardstown, New Orleans, St. Louis, and Detroit, as well activities in France and Italy. There are at least 83 documents in the files of the Propaganda Fide in Rome that are related to him in some way. I have located close to 250 letters from, to, or about him written during the years 1817 to 1835. He influenced the selection of one bishop in the United States and the rejection of another, and was himself considered for the Sees of New Orleans and Vincennes. He founded schools in Bordeaux, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. He escorted a future saint on her voyage to New Orleans and St. Louis. He was associated with three communities of religious women: the Religious of the Sacred Heart in St. Louis, Missouri, the Ursulines in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky. 1. FATHER BERNARD MARTIAL Born in Bordeaux, France about 1770, Bertrand Martial studied for the priesthood, first, in France, and then in Italy when the French Revolution forced the closing of Catholic seminaries. A death notice in the Paris journal, l’Ami de la religion et du roi, gave some details of his life before he came to Louisiana. The death of Father Martial, in New Orleans, has stirred fitting remorse in Bordeaux, where he lived for some time, and where he rendered services that will not be forgotten. -

He wrote, further, that we may never know exactly what providence expects of us but we can be sure that we will accomplish it if we are only faithful. Each of us is the beneficiary of the fidelity of those who have gone before us; our hope is that we will be as great a benefit to those who follow us. In these pages you will gain insight into the life ofa man who was faithful, whom many in his own time called a "saint." The life of Reverend Felix De Andreis, C.M., is particularly pertinent to citizens of the Midwest, to Catholics in the many Midwestern dioceses, and to theVincentian Fathers and Brothers, becausefor all oftheseindividuals hewas a part oftheirbeginnings. He, along with manyothers, certainly helped to create who and what we are today. The Archdiocese of St. Louis, in particular, owes him a great debt of gratitude. In reading the letters of De Andreis you will encounter a human being - not unlike ourselves - meeting the challenges to be holy and to be strong in the face ofsome extraordinarily difficult circumstances, not unlike our own. -

Dolan Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Archdiocese of St. Louis Archbishop Gerety Lecture at Seton Hall University, October 15, 1992 "Hence we cheerfully sent one who should represent Our Person..." wrote Pope Leo XII in his encyclical Longinqua Oceani1 to the Church of the United States, January 6, 1895, referring to the appointment of the first apostolic delegate, Archbishop Francesco Satolli, just two years previous. That January 21, 1993, will be the centennial of this event suggested the topic of this year's Archbishop Gerety Lecture, "A Century of Papal Representation in the United States." Thank you for the invitation to be part of this distinguished lecture series. For the record, I have dedicated this meagre effort to the preeminent church historian of the United States, Monsignor John Tracy Ellis, my teacher, mentor and friend who, at 87, is now recuperating from hip surgery in Washington, D.C. May the Lord of Truth whom he has served so diligently be close to him in his recovery. I propose to develop this topic under five points. First, I will treat the way the Holy See approached America prior to Archbishop Satolli's appointment; secondly, I will consider the give-and-take surrounding his nomination in 1893; then will come a staccato-like overview of the comings-and-goings of his 10 successors; fourthly, I will take a look at just what, in general, the delegates have done, offering two examples of their activities; and, finally, I will conclude with a segment on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the government of the United States. -

American Vincentians and others interested in American Catholic history know well the name of Joseph Rosati (1789-1843). As the first bishop of Saint Louis, Rosati significantly influenced the future of that immense diocese from 1826 until his death. Besides the usual ecclesias tical reminiscences such as buildings orKnights ofColumbusCouncils, the bishop's name lives on in the small hamlet of Rosati, Missouri, and in the area's winery. What is the story of Rosati, Missouri? In the early 1890s in various provinces of Italy, life was harsh, particularly for peasant farmers. They received little or nothing for the crops they raised, and suffered political repression. All through Italy, both American and Italian land companies offered land in America on easy terms. The migrants would be able to meet the costs of transpor tation by installment payments after their first harvest in America. -

No longer associated with the "divine right" of kings, it has survived the downfall of feudal and theocratic systems as a mystic personal emanation in place of a coercive weapon of statecraft. Freed from its ancient shackles of dogma and despotism it eludes analysis. We know not how to gauge its effect on others, nor even upon ourselves. Like the wind, it permeates the atmosphere we breathe, and baffles while it stimulates the mind with its intangible but compelling force. This psychic power, which the dead weight of materialism is impotent to suppress, is revealed in the lives and writings of men of the most diverse creeds and nationalities. Apart from those who, like Buddha and Mahomet, have been raised to the height of demi-gods by worshipping millions, there are names which leap inevitably to the mind--such names as Savonarola, Luther, Calvin, Rousseau--which stand for types and exemplars of spiritual aspiration. To this high priesthood of the quick among the dead, who can doubt that time will admit Leo Tolstoy--a genius whose greatness has been obscured from us rather than enhanced by his duality; a realist who strove to demolish the mysticism of Christianity, and became himself a mystic in the contemplation of Nature; a man of ardent temperament and robust physique, keenly susceptible to human 3 passions and desires, who battled with himself from early manhood until the spirit, gathering strength with years, inexorably subdued the flesh. -

Ltd., London, 1936 Source: Collection of the State Library of Victoria, Australia I In the course of many months, and particularly of late, I have been receiving daily two or three letters ftJ which young people, especially young ladies, write to me saying that they have 1ecided to do away with themselves. For some reason or other they refer to me, hoping that I, by some advice of mine, shall save them from this. These letters are of three different types. The first, the most common type, is either that of a village schoolmistress who for the sake of serving common people wishes to give up her occupation to go to college, obviously thinking that the standard of her education is not high enough to enlighten the common people, and she imagines her desire to be so strong and elevated that she has decided to do away with herself if ft cannot be realised; of an exalted youth threatening to commit suicide if nobody comes forward to help him to develop his, as he feels, wonderful talents; of an inventor wishing to confer a blessing on mankind; of a poet feeling himself to be a genius; of a young lady preferring to die if she is unable to go to college; of a woman who has fallen in love with the husband of somebody else; or of a man who has fallen in love with a married woman. The writers of these letters differ according to their sex, age, or social position, but they all have one thing in common, namely, the blind, crude egoism which blots out everything else for them except their own personality.
