A Message from our Pastor

I add my “Welcome!” to tonight’s festivities. We are thrilled you could all join us for this fun and important evening.

Thanks to this annual auction, St. Thomas More stands apart from every other Catholic school in Portland – our “extras” are second to none! We should be so proud. St. Thomas More’s commitment to develop our children intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually in an exceptional fashion is as alive as ever. And the work that will be a result of this year’s Paddle will make sure that we continue to make the best decisions as we move into the future with a great foundation and awesome anticipation at the same time.

A very special thank you to all of those who shared their talents, efforts and time to make tonight such a wonderful experience. It takes an amazing amount of coordination and cooperation and good-old-fashioned hard work – and you nailed it. A Hole In One, for sure! Thank you.

It is a pleasure to be with all of you tonight. I heartily welcome your spirited presence and thank you in advance for your generous participation. It will make a difference for the students of St. Thomas More Catholic School for years to come.

Fr. Richard Sirianni Pastor, St. Thomas More Parish

A Message from Our Principal

Thank you for supporting St. Thomas More Catholic School at our biggest celebration of the year! Tonight we come together as a community to support our children’s education. Thank you to the many individuals who have given their time, energy, and creativity to make our auction a hole in one! We are not just celebrating our school but the generous spirit of the entire community.

St. Thomas More Catholic School has been a vibrant part of our SW Portland neighborhood for over 65 years. We are proud of our history and proud of our students. The dedication of faculty, staff, and parents is evident every day in our hallways. The students work hard and we can say this is a great place to learn.

The contributions you make tonight will enable us to continue to provide academic excellence and strong values that are the hallmark of St. Thomas More Catholic School. The additional funding not only enables the continuation of programs that make our school an exceptional place for learning, it elevates our curriculum beyond the basics of what other schools are able to offer. Each contribution, from the smallest donation to the largest, supports our school and contributes to our shared mission.

I extend a personal thank you to all who have worked so hard to bring this event together. I am especially grateful for the leadership of chairs Kathi Austin and Darci Keljo. These parents, and many others, have given countless hours of time and energy to this event. I am deeply grateful for their dedication to our school and their willingness to share their talents. Thank you!

As we get ready to tee off and enjoy the efforts of many, we also celebrate the gentle care of our God who continues to shower us with love and so many blessings. Thank you for your continued support. Line up your put, raise your bidder card high, and meet me at the clubhouse. Have a fabulous evening and watch out for those water hazards and sand traps!

With much appreciation,

Amy Jefferis Principal

Page 41 22. Paddle In the past several years, funds raised by the Paddle have provided for a facelift to every single classroom and the hallways of our school, a covered play area so our students can enjoy more outside time during the school day, a state of the art computer lab, safe and fun playground equipment – and much more. We have been blessed by very generous donations, benefitted from tremendous efforts by so many people and should feel proud of the “updates” the school has undergone.

We believe now is the right time to launch a strategic planning process that will help us move into the next phase of development at St. Thomas More Catholic School in the smartest and most efficient way possible. What should be next as we consider our immediate needs and long-term goals? We want to develop a plan to help us make the best decisions at the right time in order to optimize the next round of efforts and funding. We know we need a comprehensive campus inspection, an in-depth survey to clarify the needs/wants of our community, a feasibility study to determine what is possible based on our financial status and the foundation for a fundraising plan to help us achieve our larger identified goals. DO

We are in the process of speaking with several companies and individuals who specialize in this type of planning and are encouraged by the kind of partnership we will develop. You can trust that our team of dedicated administrators, teachers and parents will be led by experts in this very specialized field.

As you can imagine, funding for this type of project is not something that is included in the cost of tuition. This year, per our direction and with the endorsement of the School Advisory Council (SAC), Paddle donations will help to fund this much-needed strategic planning process.

We have a tremendous opportunity before us and will need your help. This Paddle will be remembered as an incredibly important one...a significant collaboration that helped to lay the groundwork for the immediate and long-term future of this school that we love so much.

Showcases

23a. Kindergarten Showcase: Painting $1,000

The kids each had the opportunity to make marks all over a panel. Artist Jennifer Mercede encouraged them to go fast/slow, close their eyes, use their non-dominant hand to feel the connection to the process, free up and have fun. It was a great introduction to abstract art and the notion that art can be all about having fun! Inspired by the colors and the marks the kids made, Jennifer took the piece home and finished it with a few additions. Ms. Mercede calls it “expressive painting and doodling on a wood panel.”

Dimensions: 40” x 40”

About the Artist Originally from the East Coast, and now living in Portland, OR Jennifer Mercede’s primarily abstract paintings consist of free flow text, bright color fields and energetic doodling. She is inspired by funky color combinations, children’s art, graffiti and abstract expressionism. Her process is spontaneous and expressive. To quote Mercede: “I paint fast. I doodle. I paint stream of consciously. For me there are no mistakes in painting, and I like to think, there are no mistakes in life!”

Thank You to the Kindergarten Students, Parents and Teachers – and to artist Jennifer Mercede.

23b. First Grade Showcase: Painting $1,200

In this fun collaborative project, the first grade students worked with Bend, Oregon, painter Colleen Dougherty to create a modern acrylic painting. Armed with acrylic paints, glitter and Spackle knives, Colleen worked with each of the children while they poured, spread and scraped to create the first coat of this multi-layered painting. As each young artist left his or her mark, the painting took form in color and texture. Colleen finished the painting in Bend. Artist Andrew Wachs created a custom frame to complete the piece.

Thank You to the First Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to painter Colleen Dougherty and artist Andrew Wachs.

23c. Second Grade Showcase: Pillows $125 per pillow

The second grade students study salmon throughout the school year. Artist Whitney Nye thought it would be fun for the children to use their sense of color and imagination to fill in a sketch of a salmon that she created.

The drawings of each student were digitally printed onto canvas and then sewn into decorative pillows that have the unique and individual markings of each child. These pillows are a fun and expressive reminder of your child’s second grade experience. Made locally by a seamstress with high quality fabric and colorful detail, these stylish lumbar pillows are the perfect size (12” x 18”) to go anywhere… beach house, cabin or just tossed onto your favorite spot on the sofa or your favorite chair at home. We have a funny feeling your second grader will want to keep it in his or her own room!

About the Artist Whitney Nye is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. Her work is deeply affected by the texture, hues and sensations of the world that surrounds her. Working in different mediums, Nye’s thematic approach consistently examines patterns of repetition. She explores the rhythms and pauses of our natural world, becoming a conduit for their character. Travel of all kinds is a key influence and source of inspiration. Whitney is a graduate of the University of Oregon. She is represented by the Laura Russo Gallery in Oregon and exhibits nationally as well.

Thank You to the Second Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to artist Whitney Nye.

23d. Third Grade Showcase: Game Cube $1,800

Scott Farnsworth, a local woodworking artist (and grandfather of third-grader Nicholas Dolp) constructed the wooden cube out of poplar and a combination of mahogany, walnut and maple woods for the chess/ checker board top. The game board top flips over to reveal a cherry red and multicolor-flecked fabric cushion top, upholstered by a local upholsterer.

The 18” cube’s four sides are covered with endearing bio-poems written by the 3rd grade students and wood burned onto the cube by two STM mothers. The laser- cut wooden checker pieces feature the children’s self portraits and handwritten names engraved on each. Both checker pieces and coordinating wooden chess pieces are contained in a matching red fabric bag stored inside the cube.

Thank You to the Third Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to woodworking artist Scott Farnsworth, Ellen Fitchen Design and Green Demon Laser.

Page 48 St. Thomas More Annual Auction 2014

23e. Fourth Grade Showcase: Painting $2,000

The paintings of artist Jake Kaempf are created through a string of processes and techniques that vary relative to the subject matter. The fourth graders work was conceptualized, then photographed, then sketched in pencil, pen, and ink, in large and small formats to get a better understanding of the subject matter. Then the materials, colors and sizing were selected to best suit the final composition. The subject was drawn on very high quality, hot-pressed, large-format watercolor paper.

The most unique part of the process lies within the technique and application of water, gouache and ink. In this process the artist paints invisibly with water then, utilizing the various characteristics of the ink and gouache, manipulates the flow of the ink through the channels created. This process is what creates the unique look of his style.

About the Artist Jake was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, where he attended the Oregon Episcopal School. He went to college at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he learned the various techniques of the fine and commercial arts. After college, he worked professionally as a creative director in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2012, he founded his first company in Portland, Ampersand Content, which he now leads building experience in design, creative strategy, and content development for various clientele locally, nationally, and internationally.

Thank You to the Fourth Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to artist Jake Kaempf.

23f. Fifth Grade Showcase: Paintings $2,000

Inspired by artist Suzy Kitman’s Big Fruit Series, the pear theme was chosen to study as a regional fruit and because it is a “natural form full of beauty, depth and sweetness.” Each student started by drawing still life’s from actual pears onto paper, then directly onto canvas rectangles. They then used acrylics to paint in the images.

Artist Suzy Kitman encouraged the students to mix colors, create shadows and use an impasto technique. In her studio, she chose a canvas, then laid a base color down before affixing each individual painting to the canvas in a pleasing layout. The entire surface was glazed over to unify the vibrant colors of this amazing still life painting created by the 5th grade class.

About the Artist Suzy Kitman holds an MFA in Painting from The University of Montana. She is a classically trained painter specializing in portraiture, landscape and still life. Commissions are encouraged. Her work has been exhibited, published and included in private and public collections across the country and her work is represented at the Freed Gallery in Lincoln City, Oregon. Suzy has taught painting and drawing at Multnomah Art Center, Portland Art Museum, Hipbone Studio, Portland Community College and The University of Montana. She also tutors students of all ages in art from her studio in St Johns. To see her artwork online and to learn more about commissions and tutoring, please visit www.suzykitman. com. Additionally, studio visits can be arranged by appointment

Thank You to the Fifth Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to artist Suzy Kitman.

23g. Sixth Grade Showcase $2,000

Under the direction of artists Yolanda Valdes Rementeria and Humberto Gonzalez, the sixth grade students each used acrylics and plaster to design “whatever inspired them” on 12” square canvases. Portland artist Ryan Birkland, STM Auction favorite and uncle of STM students Ella and Will Bozich, then took the canvases and combined them into a large-scale piece. Ryan loved that kids created the foundation and texture for this piece. This collaborative work is 6’ x 5’.

About the artists Yolanda ValdésRementería Yolanda’s interest in art began at an early age. She enjoys painting in a variety of media because after years of exploration she finds that each medium option offers a unique enrichment to the senses. She also loves nature. The ideas for her paintings are often a direct response from the landscape in the plein aire tradition. She is equally fascinated by the diversity in people and lovse to paint portraits.

Humberto Gonzalez Humberto Gonzalez lives and paints in the Willamette Valley. He travels throughout the Pacific Northwest and finds favorite viewpoints to paint on site using watercolor, and most recently, acrylic paint. Gonzalez was born in Camargo, Tamaulipas. In 1971, Gonzalez moved to Lebanon, Oregon to accept a teaching position at Lebanon Union High School where he taught Spanish, painting, drawing, and English (fiction and novel) before retiring in 1999. Gonzalez is currently painting full time.

23g. Ryan Birkland cont. Born and raised in Portland, Ryan Birkland is an artist, Marine Corps veteran, and truck driver. He has been painting professionally for over a decade, exhibiting his work in the Northwest, throughout the country, and internationally. Painting has been a constant study in his life. From reverse painting on glass to large scale stretched canvas and murals, Ryan Birkland’s art is a metaphorical expression of his relationships with people, nature and life itself.

23h. Seventh Grade Showcase $1000

The personality of a class is determined by the sum of its parts -- distinct individuals coming together to form one, collective whole. This is the theme explored in the seventh grade showcase entitled, “Us.” Local artist Suzy Root challenged the 7th graders to think of images and words that best describe themselves, and these images and words became the inspiration for a cyanotype collage (also known as blueprints). The collage features photographs taken by each student on his or her iPad, which were then converted to gray-scale, inverted and printed to create something similar to a photographic negative. These “negatives” were rendered transparent with oil and then laid on cyanotype paper and exposed to UV light to make cyan-blue prints. Students also brought in objects, representing hobbies, memories, or anything else symbolic of themselves, which also were made into cyanotypes. Lastly, the students contributed quotes, lyrics, or other phrases, in various fonts and sizes, to best capture their essence. These individual images and words were mixed together and arranged to create a fascinating, unified whole… just like the class itself. Local artist and framer Efrain Gonzalez helped finish the piece into a contemporary 34” x 34” clear-glass collage.

About the artist Suzy Root received a Masters of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art and a Masters Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College. She works in a variety of media and has exhibited locally and nationally. Her work explores the relationships between memory, place and object.

Thank You to the Seventh Grade Students, Parents and Teachers – and to artist Suzy Root and framer Efrain Gonzalez.
