The decade leading up to the 1952 revolution was one characterized with a heightened state of popular mobilisation, much of which the Free Officers’ movement capitalized upon. Thus, in focusing on three of the Revolution’s main milestones; the resistance to the tripartite aggression on Port Said (1956), the building of the Aswan High Dam (1960- 1971), and the popular warfare against Israel in Suez (1967-1973), I shed light on the popular struggles behind the events.

HER-STORY ON FEMALE POWER AND AUTHORITY IN THE ZAMBEZI VALLEY, MOZAMBIQUE Carmeliza Soares da Costa Rosário University of Bergen [email protected] Donas da Terra. her-story on female power and authority in the Zambezi Valley, Mozambique! ! Abstract The Zambezi Valley, in Mozambique has been considered a sociological construct, more than geographical space. Portuguese colonial rule over this area, enacted initially from Goa, instituted the prazo system which was a system by which Crown land was leased to settlers for a fixed period. To attract more settlers, some prazos were given as dowry to girls who married Portuguese vassals; to be inherited through the female line, for at least three generations. These women became known as the Donas. Indigenous women in the region were also reportedly powerful and had administrative authority. Among the Maravi, the wife of the karonga had jurisdiction over part of the territory. Female chiefs were also reported to have existed. Among the Shona, the wives of the mutapa had their own territory and at times served as ambassadors of the empire. Despite their notoriety, historical texts mention these women marginally or as surrogates to male dominance. This is not a coincidence, but stems from a male perception of female roles. By constructing a text which generally ignores women’s role in history or relegates it to a secondary plane by comparison to their male counterparts, historians may have not made justice to the social, political and economic structures and inner workings of the Zambezi Valley complex, to borrow Mathews (1981) term.

  • China in Latin America: the Storm on the Horizon Investigating Chinese Investment and Its Effects in Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia Christina Pendergrast
Prospectus Pendergrast 1 China in Latin America: The Storm on the Horizon Investigating Chinese Investment and its Effects in Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia Christina Pendergrast Over the past decade, China has steadily increased its economic presence throughout the global south.1 However, when it comes to scholarly analysis of Chinese investment policy, much of the scholarly focus has been placed on Africa despite major Chinese investments throughout Latin America. I plan to investigate the nature of Chinese investment in Latin America and how China plans to benefit from said investments. Therefore, this project seeks to discover: What kind of influence is China generating in Latin America through its economic investments, and how does/will that influence affect the balance of power in the region? This question interests me largely due to my experience within the realm of national security. While I was working with the State Department, I learned of the priority placed on China within the Intelligence Community. There were so many facets to the issue that it was hard to keep track of them all; however, I naturally gravitated towards the analysis of Chinese involvement in less developed countries. I had read about Chinese projects in Africa during my work with the Cipher Brief writing about developments in Africa, and to a lesser extent heard about China in the context of my Latin America regional classes. So, to research China in Latin America is a way that I can learn more about a topic relevant to the career I aspire to while contextualizing that new region within an area I am already familiar with.

THE ISRAEL/PALESTINE QUESTION The Israel/Palestine Question assimilates diverse interpretations of the origins of the Middle East conflict with emphasis on the fight for Palestine and its religious and political roots. Drawing largely on scholarly debates in Israel during the last two decades, which have become known as ‘historical revisionism’, the collection presents the most recent developments in the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict and a critical reassessment of Israel’s past. The volume commences with an overview of Palestinian history and the origins of modern Palestine, and includes essays on the early Zionist settlement, Mandatory Palestine, the 1948 war, international influences on the conflict and the Intifada. Ilan Pappé is Professor at Haifa University, Israel. His previous books include Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict (1988), The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1947–51 (1994) and A History of Modern Palestine and Israel (forthcoming). Rewriting Histories focuses on historical themes where standard conclusions are facing a major challenge. Each book presents 8 to 10 papers (edited and annotated where necessary) at the forefront of current research and interpretation, offering students an accessible way to engage with contemporary debates. Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.
