Helmet: Youtravel all overthe country training firefighters, young and old. You have also been doing this a long time, 23 years. What keeps you motivated?

Lombardo: On a simple basis, I enjoy it. I really do like it. I likefirefighting. Inteachingthefiveor six years, seven yearsout side of my area, what it's done is reinvigorated me by meeting peoplefrom all over. Oneof the things I don't know if people understand is we learn as much every time we go some placeaslthinkthepeopledoandmaybe more, sometimes. You know, last year wedidtheGetOut Alive overthe summer and guys would say this is how we do thisorthis is how we do that. It's great getting new ideas. It's one more thingyou can thinkabout and put in your bag of tricks, soa lot of it's just still learning. Idonteverwanttostop learning. My daughter gotonfour years ago and it sort of renewed all that. It's a lot of things but I truly do just enjoy it very much.

Helmet: Speaking of your daughter, how is it working with her hand-in- hand?

Lombardo: It's very interesting (smiles). It's got some tense moments every now and then when she's going to afire. We worked together on a fire that killed afirefighter in Buffalo. She was working. Iwasworking. Wecame from different parts of the assignment. I was on the second alarm and she was thereearly. Itwasobviouslyaprettyanxiouseveningfor all of us because welostafirefighterand, fortheinitialpartofit, ldidn'tevenknowifshewas okay. So,thatwasprettytough, butrmreallyproudofher. She does a really good job. This is the firstyear she came to FDIC and I think she didareally good job here, too.

Helmet: You have worked on a couple of videos produced by Bob Pressler, "The Bread and Butter Series." Oneofthosewas"Peaked RoofVentilation" and the other was "SCBA Safety and Emergency Operations." Tell usabout those.

Lombardo: "Peaked RoofVentilation" was thefirst "Bread and Butter" that Bobdid. We did a lot of roof operations, in and around the city. Then, we also were ableto get some filming for a couple of actual fires where we had a couple of peaked roof jobs going. We did a lotof different work hand tools as well as powertools and just showed the differences and someof thesaf ety factors and soforth. The SCBA procedures video was early on with what we started doing with the f i ref ighter safety program thatl had gotten theaward last yearfrom Fire Engineering. Thefirsttimeltaughtthatwasdownin Connecticut outside of Buffalo in about 1988. We have refined it many times since then and thereare many programslikeittodaythatdoatremendous jobteachingfirefighters. So, we were teaching safety and survival early on. Helmet: Congratulations. You have undoubtedly saved the lives of many firefighterssince 1988justby them taking the time to cometoyourtraining on theirownortheirdepartments sending them to you.

Lombardo: Thankyou very much.

Helmet: IhaveheardthatCincinnati is tryingto lure theFDICbacktothem. Can you enlighten us on any of that?

Lombardo. I really dontknow. My own personal feeling isthis. The support we get, like live burn from the DecaturTownship Fire Department and the whole FDIC, both thehandsontrainingaswellasthesupportwegetfrom the Indianapolis Metropolitan Fire Departments is phenomenal. That is certainly adecision that has nothingtodo with mebutitwould bean awfullytough thing to replacethe cooperation and help we get-here. Lookattheotherday. Keepin mind, I'mspeakingof just usbut itgoesonacrossthewholeFDICeveryyearforotherpeople, too. You know there's a lot of help that is available to us.

Helmet: The Indianapolis Fire Department has a newadministration. that haveany beari ng on FDIC that you can see?

Lombardo: Well, Iknowthereisanewadministrationbutlalsoseemany of the same people whoarehelpingusarestill there. Chief Dickson, Captain Roberts, Lieutenant Bill Brown, Chief Longerich areonly afewfrom the long list of people in Indywhodoatremendous amount ofworkfor us. At least thisyear, from my exposure, they are still in placedoing an awful lot so I would think not, but I don't know what the future will bring.

Helmet: Without knowingthe future, how hard will it be to start over, per say?

Lombardo: When we came here four years ago, we didnt know anybody and wecameuptospeedon both sides prettyquickly. Now.thisyear, we're going out to Sacramentoforthefirst time. They sentanumber of peopleto this conference to look around and see howthings are done. I thinkthatit is in the spirit and tradition ofthe fire service that nobody steps up and does the joblikefirefighters do. Iwould thinkthat, ifthepeoplechangeatlFD,the new people will stepupand do what has to be donetodo the job.

Helmet: Yearafteryear, you go backanddiscusstheliveburn days. Is thereanything that we, asthe fire service in Marion County, cando differently for you as far as the instructors are concerned?
