Participation in sport helps to develop the mind, improve health and fitness, sharpen skills, and boost confidence, often regardless of ability. In fact, you don’t have to be a polished athlete to feel a sense of accomplishment. He is an accomplished presenter and his commentaries have been heard by thousands, used on programmes such as BBC’s Football Focus and BBC Late Kick Off. The versatile broadcaster has made appearances on 5 Live’s Monday Night Club and is a regular host at fan forums and ceremonies. Johnny also lectures at universities on both news and sport as well as being a voice over on TV adverts for Radio Times magazine and has presented top stories for BBC Regional news programmes. Martin Bodenham Martin began refereeing in 1966 and progressed through the local leagues to become a Premier League referee. He also operated on the FIFA list, taking charge of international and European club fixtures. Currently, Martin is on the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and acts as an Observer Reviewer looking at key match decisions as part of his role on the Review Panel. He is also a Referee Developer. David Crick David is The Referee’s Association representative on the FA Council and has held the position since July 2013. He first qualified as a referee in 1970, and quickly progressed up the refereeing ladder joining the FIFA list of assistant referees in 1995. Now, along with his FA Council duties, David is a National League observer and Level 3 referee coach. Paul Dolan Paul is the Senior Regional Manager at The FA for the South East region, providing support and guidance for County FA’s and helping them develop football For ALL. He is passionate about grassroots football and rewarding the fantastic work carried out, he spearheaded the introduction of the County FA Recognition Awards. Previously Paul was Chief Executive at the Kent FA, a role he held for 8 years. With the two top teams from this round going through to the next stages of the cup, Sussex County Representative side and Maidstone United from Kent will now automatically go through to the next round. Not wanting to miss out on the opportunity to play football, a friendly match went ahead instead of the planned cup matches.

With football getting ever faster and the players ever fitter, it sometimes seems the men in black face a mission impossible. For some players it has become almost second nature to use hands and arms to pull their opponent’s shirt, push them or hold them back, to the point where the culprits seem genuinely surprised when they are penalised and simulation has become an everyday part of the game. But while there is consensus on the need to assist the referees, opinions differ on how: for many video evidence is the solution, as it is considered perfectly suited to our modern world and used successfully in other sports. For others – and it is no secret that I am one of them – video refereeing would only spoil football, as it means the game would have to be stopped, however briefly (or not), to review the scene, ideally in slow-motion and if necessary comparing the footage with that of another camera because, as everyone knows, a different angle can invite a different interpretation. Of course, the human eye is not foolproof either. But thanks to the radio system in place, additional pairs of eyes on the penalty area can be of valuable IN THIS ISSUE assistance to the main referee.

In a change to the normal format, he will be interviewed by David Allen, Hampshire Cricket’s Honorary Archivist. AMOL RAJAN grew up in Tooting. He studied English at Downing College, Cambridge, where he joined a distinguished list of editors of Varsity, the student newspaper. He joined The Independent as a news reporter in 2007, and was subsequently Sports News Correspondent, before eventually progressing to Deputy Comment Editor. He now works as an adviser to Evgeny Lebedev, owner of The Independent titles and the London Evening Standard. His week includes writing on cricket, politics and restaurants. He is a trustee of Prospex, a charity for young people in Islington. He is probably best known in the cricket world as the author of Twirleymen – The Unlikely History of Cricket’s Greatest Spin Bowlers. Wednesday 11 January 2012 – Report The good-sized audience who attended the January meeting enjoyed an informative and enlightening discourse on the life of a Premier League referee and first-class umpire in the company of Martin Bodenham. He started with his football career at the top level, which extended over twenty years and 800 matches. He is still involved in the sport. A level 3 coach, he looks after a group of referees who officiate semi-professional matches. He is also a member of the Key Match Incident (KMI) panel (KMIs being 2nd yellow cards and penalties or not) for all matches from the Conference to the Premier League.

For the most part, this was the first time that the committees had convened since they were formed and embedded in the UEFA Statutes at the extraordinary congress in Zurich last year. These consultative committees are an exceptionally valuable resource for the Executive Committee. Football nowadays affects so many incredibly vast domains that meetings of UEFA’s executive body would be both endless and tiresome if the committees were not there to study matters relating to their areas of specialisation and facilitate the executive’s decision-making process by means of pertinent recommendations.
