WHAT IS OLLI?

We are OLLI. We are your friends and neighbors, and we want to stay vital as we reach and enjoy retirement. One way to do that is to keep learning, so we’ve joined the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley University – OLLI.

OLLI at Bradley has over 1,000 Peoria-area members from age 50 to 98 who come from all backgrounds and educational levels. Together we enjoy the camaraderie of our peers as we participate in a myriad of educational events designed just for us. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere of OLLI only adds to our experiences. It’s learning our way!

OLLI offers several programs: Learning Trips, Study Groups, Classes, Lectures, and Special Events. You’ll find each of them described in this brochure.

WE ARE OLLI! OLLI volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. We celebrate our success due to their efforts. Thank you!

OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE AT BRADLEY UNIVERSITY

We learn our way. That’s a line from the OLLI campaign brochure that was mailed to everyone in September. The line struck a chord with me because it sums up what OLLI is all about. We learn. That means that all of our courses, all of our trips, all of our movies – everything we do – aims at teaching us something, and thus enriching our lives. Some people have told me they’re “too old” to learn, or even, as one man told me, “I finished with all that stuff when I got out of school.” Wow, what he is missing! I’m 82 years old, and my mind is still functioning. OLLI keeps me young and ever more inquisitive. We learn our way. There’s a lot of meaning packed into those two words “our way.” Each of us sets his/her own rules on what to learn and when to learn it. No requirements, no previous educational experience. Whether you’re a grade school graduate only or you have a Ph.D., you can find something to stimulate your mind at OLLI. And no tests! No grades! When I talk to someone about teaching an OLLI class, I ask them: “How would you like to teach a class where everybody is there because they want to be, when you ask a question many hands will shoot into the air (and if you don’t ask a question, the hands will go up anyway as people seek to learn more), where you don’t have to read papers, you don’t have to give tests, and there are no grades?” We get outstanding teachers because they like our way of learning. Last July I attended a conference for lifetime-learning people. Our Bradley OLLI clearly stood out as an OLLI of national distinction. People from other OLLIs were mightily impressed by our programs and our large number of dedicated volunteers. It felt good to do a little bragging about Bradley, Peoria, and OLLI! But it also felt good to see so many people in their golden years who are still enriching their lives in a learning environment. Yes, we all learn our way, and it’s a mighty good way!

GIVE to OLLI At the fall kickoff luncheon, Past President Carolyn Shepherd announced the OLLI Challenge, a fundraising initiative to support OLLI’s future. Carolyn explained to the audience that The Bernard Osher Foundation has asked all of the 117 OLLIs in the nation to demonstrate financial sustainability, including support from members. This support will also assist our OLLI as we seek a second $1 million endowment. Each of you should have received a brochure in the mail with more information. Your tax deductible donation will help us reach our $50,000 goal and secure OLLI’s future.

That’s the focus of OLLI Study Groups where we investigate a topic in depth. These discussion-based groups often include the opportunity for us to make presentations, lead a discussion, or do some reading or work outside the class. In this arrangement, each of us is both a learner and a teacher. While Bradley University is often our base of operation, we also have several community partners who are open-
