The Power Section mixed up a storm with a Cocktail Night on 30 April. Barman Mike shook it up with style behind the bar mixing a variety of cocktails from scratch; none of the usual premix stuff for us! The night coincided with young Kerry Selden’s birthday. Kerry was surprised by special birthday wishes, birthday cake and a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’. Power boaters were happy to assist with the disposal of her scrumptious ‘Splash’ birthday cake along with the yummy food supplied by the club. It was a great event and the cocktails were delicious, well worth the modest cost of the evening.

ARCHIVES COMMITTEE REPORT No 3 TO BOM FOR 2017 AGM

The Archives Committee officially commenced in Nov/Dec 2014

Chair Carolyn Jupp – collection, research and data entry Janine Taylor – inshore trophies register Doug Taylor – trophies & history Kaye Riseley - history & committee budget Peter Stallwood – FSC Plans & special charts June Rodda – research and data entry

The team bring skills, knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to the saving of the Club’s history. Since its inception it has collected items donated since 2008 (stored in year by year boxes) into a compactus and using a free software (Tapestry) has set up a computerized cataloguing system known as FAS (FSC Archive System).

After the Club’s refurbishment in 2015, art, photos and pictures were collected, assessed and where necessary repaired. These are now stored in an Archives Picture Rack (kindly built by the Bosuns).

Space was provided in the Library West and Library East rooms for the Archives Team to work in and much scanning has been done starting with the earliest documentation. Some items are pre 1900.

Image left & below: 1901 First Yacht Racing Week of WA Program cover

Image left: 1984 Nov Blue Water Bulletin p15 The scanned items are documents eg letters, programs and race results – many as far back as the 1930’s where the Clubs all raced together in each others events, - Blue Water Bulletins – earliest February 1973 - reports, minutes, invoices, financial statements, club rules and constitutions - members list and membership tickets.

In the past Doug and Janine Taylor built a register of all the Inshore trophies and some of the offshore trophies which has been our starting point. Gradually all Section trophies will be done, numbered and added to the FAS. It is hoped that the sailing results (via Sailing Admin) will be stored in a special archival folder on the Server. Other Sections will be approached with a view to having their records kept in the same way. All trophies will have FAS numbers and a special home in the cabinets. Protocols are planned for trophy movement so that they are safely stored between presentations. Historic defunct trophies will be stored separately from the active trophies which are in the foyer cabinets and the shields hanging in the alcove next to the Sailors Bar.

ACTIVE WALL After the refurbishment the Archives requested the wall in the Sailors Bar as an Active Wall for changing displays to reflect history in between current event displays. This wall has been noted and commented on by Members.

ORAL HISTORIES The Archives Committee is committed to the ongoing collection of oral histories in an effort to help preserve as wide a point of view of the Club’s “growing years”. These histories are also a means of keeping a record of just some of the very active and devoted members who have contributed greatly to the Club and helped it become the prestigious organisation it is today.

Oral Histories to date – Noel Sweetman - 2016 Garth Silcock - 2016 Peter Stallwood - 2017 Colin McDougall - 2017 John Musarra - 2017 Peter Blaxell - 2017 Cherry Callcott - 2017 + 3 others this year

In April 2017 FSC Management decided on a restructure of office space and that saw the Archives gain part of the Library and give up the West Room. This will place all the Archives in one area, making an easier working arrangement.

While there is a huge amount of work still to be done with the items we currently have, it is my hope as Chair, that the FAS system will become a ready reference for members in the not too distant future. From the November 1984 Blue Water Bulletin
