    1997 Game-by-Game Recaps May 28, vs. Southeastern Oklahoma State University The Cougars rallied once, but then suffered a heart-breaking loss as second-seeded Southeastern Oklahoma State (ranked #3 in the final NAIA poll) eliminated MVNC from the NAIA World Series with a 6-5 win in ten innings. Through the first eight innings, the Cougars managed just two hits (singles by Bob Hartless and Mike Sorbin) as the Savages built a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Hartless drove in two runs and Sean Barrett, Chris Iceman, and Travis Gray each drove in a run to tie the score at 5-5. Then, in the top of the tenth, Southeastern Oklahoma State scored an unearned run on a throwing error and a passed ball. Starter Marty McLeary allowed eight hits, four walks, and four earned runs in seven innings of work. Dave Byard (9-2) suffered the loss in relief as he allowed three hits, three walks, and two runs in three innings of work. Hartless led the offense with two hits as MVNC finished the season with a school-best 47-8 record. May 24, vs. Dominican (NY) College MVNC rebounded from its first-round loss to eliminate the Chargers from the NAIA World Series with a 10-0 victory in loser's bracket action. Mike Patch (12-0) was outstanding on the mound for the Cougars as he tied the school record for pitching victories in a season by notching his 12th win.

    HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.

    SPRING 2003 Two Trips to California [UPDATE: November, 2009—As I gradually go back over my old travelogues, I’ll be leaving the original text intact but adding additional comments in boldfaced enclosed in brackets to expand on what was originally said. I’ll also add some additional scanned photos to enhance the original travelogues.] Trip #1 . The Blooming Desert at Easter The main excuse for this trip had been to see my former student Brad Nelson playing minor league baseball. I had watched many of Brad’s games in his first full season as a professional, when he had a sensational year—leading all of baseball in runs batted in and being named the Milwaukee Brewers’ Minor League Player of the Year. Most of Brad’s first season was spent about 350 miles from Algona, with the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. While it was a fairly lengthy trip to Beloit, I still basically just got in the car and headed over to Wisconsin on a whim. This year, though would be different, because now Brad had been promoted to the California League and was playing for the High Desert Mavericks—just down the road from Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but a 1600- mile journey from my home. That kind of a trip requires planning, and I had been planning this Easter getaway since about Christmas. I had also planned to make a second trip out west at Memorial Day. I got some good deals on both airfare and motels, and everything seemed to fit together like clockwork.

    Issue # 140 NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA JUNE, 2006 Zephyrs Played Their Way Into Contention The New Orleans Zephyrs completed the month of May with a winning record (17–13) and played with more consistency as the season wore on. Having put an 11-game losing streak behind them in early May, manager Tim Foli’s team hung tough to win a marathon 24-inning game on the road in Nashville (see page 4). That win seemed to refocus the team, as they won 10 of the next 13 games, to put themselves back into contention in the Southern Division. The month of May did not begin well for the Zs. They lost the first three games of the month to extend their long losing streak to 11. On May 4, at Memphis, the Zephyrs pushed across a 9th-inning run to win, 3–2 over the Redbirds. The next night in Nashville was the 24-inning saga that overlapped two evenings. New Orleans came out on top, 5–4 in the marathon game; then they dropped the regularly scheduled game, 7–5. The Zephyrs won eight of their next nine games, including a 7–1 homestand against Fresno and Sacramento. The middle of the New Orleans lineup, anchored by Brendan Harris and Larry Broadway, was producing enough runs to win.
