ORIGINAL ORGANIZATION, I877 School Committee Chamber, Boston, November 10, 1877. Pursuant to a call issued by the Chairman of the Committee to draft a Constitution for a pro­ posed Pedagogical As.wciation, the following gentlemen met in the rooms of the Boston School Board on Saturday, November 10, at 11 A. M., J. D. Philbrick presiding, to hear the report of said Committee, and further perfect an organiza­ tion:-J. D. Philbrick, of Boston; J. W. Dicken­ son, of Newton; Ephraim Hunt, of Newton; A. G. Davis, of Somerville; Caleb Emery, Elbridge Smith, L. A. Anderson, L. H. Buckingham, Charles B. Stet­ son, D. W. Jones, C. G. Clark, of Boston; and the Secretary ...... Voted, on motion of Mr. Smith, that a Committee of three be chosen to nominate officers. The floor appointed Messrs. Tweed, Boyden, and Clark. Boston, February 25, 1888. The Schoolmasters' Club held its second meeting of the sixth year at the Brunswick, Saturday, February the 25, 1888, at 12.45 P. M. (Called to order at 1.20 P. M.) President J. F. Blackington occupied the Chair...... 2. The proposition to change the name of the Club was taken from the table and was advocated by Dr. Hagar. It was then unanimously adopted by an "aye" vote; and Article first of the Con­ stitution was thereby made to read as follows:-

BosTox, February 3, 193-l. A new Constitution, s ubmitted to members, per vote of meeting of Dec. 16, 1933, was unanimously adopted this date at a regular meeting of the Massachusetts Schoolmasters' Club. HEl\'RY W. R. ARNOLD, CO~STITUTION

ARTICLE I.-NAME AND OBJECT Section 1. The name of this Club shall be the Massachusetts Schoolmasters' Club. Section 2. The object of the Massachusetts Schoolmasters' Club shall be to promote a better understanding of education, to examine current practice in education, to guide public opinion in its evaluation and support of education and to stimulate a professional and fraternal spirit among the members of this organization.

ARTICLE H.-MEMBERS Section 1. Any man who is actively interested in the work of education is eligible for member­ ship. Section 2. Honorary membership shall be ex­ tended to all past presidents and past secretaries and to such other men not members of the club who have rendered distinguished service in Edu­ cation as may from time to time be voted upon by the Club in the same manner as hereinafter pro· vided for active members. An honorary member shall enjoy all privileges of active membership, but is exempt from payment of annual dues and may not be dropped from the Club for any other reason than by his request or in event of death. Section 3. Application for membership shall be by invitation only. It shall be in writing and on a blank provided for the purpose. This blank shall contain all essential information concerning the applicant and be approved in writing by two members of the Club. The application shall be referred to the standing committee on Member­ ship. This committee shall report to the club and if the application is approved by the committee the applicant shall be voted upon by ballot by the Club. If one-eighth of those present and voting cast ballots against the candidate, he shall be declared rejected and may not be again voted upon during the current administration. Section 4. The accepted candidate, except in the case of Honorary .Membership, shall be re­ quired to pay an admission fee of $5.00 at or be­ fore the next meeting of the Club. He shall then sign the Constitution and upon the first oppor­ tunity be presented to the Club by the President at which time the President will explain briefly the object and obligations of the Club. Section 5. The administrative year shall begin at the close of the April meeting. The annual clues for ali active members shall be $1.00 payable at the February meeting. Failure to pay the annual clues during the administrative year shall be construed as withdrawal from the Club. New members shall be exempt from the $1.00 dues during the Club year of their entrance. Section 6. Members shall be required to pay · within three months all assessments voted by the Club. Non-compliance with this requirement shall be construed as withdrawal from the Club. Any member absenting himself from four consecutive regular meetings of the Club, shall cease to be a member of the Club, unless he pays a sum equal to the cost of one dinner within two months after his fourth absence. This section shall not apply to members no longer in active service, nor shall the preceding requirement apply to members living outside of Massachusetts.

ARTICLE IlL- OFFICERS Section l. The officers shall be a president, three vice-presidents, and one secretary-treasurer. They shall be elected by ballot at the annual meet­ ing and shall collectively form the Executive Committee. Section ~. A Board of six Directors shall be appointed by the President annually for the club year. They shall serve with the officers as an Advisory Committee to the President. Section 3. There shall be the following stand­ ing committees appointed by the incoming Presi­ dent in April of each year: Membership, Pub- licity, Nominations, Auditing. The duties of these committees are indicated by their names, but may be further defined by the Executive Committee from time to time. ARTICLE IV.-MEETINGS Section 1. The annual meeting shall be held in April anrl other regular meetings in October, December and February at such time and place as the Executive Committee may determine or the club designate. Section 2. The Executive Committee shall have power to call a special or extra meeting. Section 3. The Exeeutive Committee shall have power to fill a ll vacancies in its membership during the administrative year until the annual meeting. ARTICLE V.- FINANCE 8ection 1. The accounts of the treasurer shall ·be audited annually prior to the April meeting by the Auditing Committee and a report made at that meeting. Section 2. No money shall be paid out of the treasury except by vote of the Club or by vote of the Executive Committee. Section 3. Assessments may be made only by vote of the club upon recommendation of the Executive Committee. ARTICLE VI.- QuoRuM The members present at any regularly called meeting shall constitute a quorum for the legal transaction of business. ARTICLE YII.- AMEND111ENTS Amendments to this constitution may be adopted by vote of two-thirrls of the members present and voting at any meeting provi.cled that notice. of such amenrlment has been gJVen a.t a. prevwus meeting and included in the call for the meeting.
