Life is for Everyone

July 2018 Volume 21, Number 7 Pre-Fair Party!

Join us for a pre-fair party on Friday, July 13th at noon at our office! We will be attaching 10-12 week old fetal models to description cards which details the stages of development that baby has already undergone. The kiddos at the fair LOVE these! Being able to give these out can change hearts and save lives – once someone can hold that tiny baby in their hands and read the developmental facts, they can easily see that it is, indeed, a baby. The first step in building a greater respect for life in the womb is educating – and what better way than this! Join us for homemade lemonade, hotdogs, chips, and cookies as well as fellowship! Come hungry and excited to make a difference! Fair Booth Volunteers

Tuesday, 24th – Sunday, 29th July is an exciting time of the year because of the Dubuque County Fair! We are so eager to be able to promote LIFE at our educational booth to thousands of people with our different fetal models, stickers, pens, pencils, bags, suckers, and brochures. Our booth provides a great opportunity to engage others and to invite them into the pro-life mission. We are looking for volunteers to help man our booth – please consider giving a few hours to stand for LIFE. Your presence makes a difference. It’s a wonderful way to educate and it’s a great deal of fun! Please call Ashley (563-556-5960) to sign up. Shifts are 11am-2pm, 2pm-5pm, and 5pm-8pm. Let us know what best fits your schedule!

Life Decisions International publishes a Boycott List every year listing the different corporations who directly support Planned Parenthood. If you are interested in the full list please contact our office, and if you would like to receive our weekly Boycott List emails, please contact Erica at [email protected]. - Page 03 - “A Bright Line” of Physical and Financial Separation in Title X

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced their proposed revisions to the Title X grant program which funds family planning services to low-income individuals. Nearly 4 million people receive these services, and in the past, they have been taken advantage of in clinics where abortion is a priority. Now, the rights of women, children, and families are strengthened under these new revisions.

One of the biggest issues that Title X has allowed is the co-location of grantees and abortion services in the same facility. This co-location blurs the lines of where the grant money actually goes. Because of current federal law, taxpayer money is banned from paying for abortion services. The new revisions reinforce that federal statute and goes a step further by requiring a clear physical and financial distinction between the two parties. This distinction will pull the funds from many Planned Parenthood clinics who are in violation of this regulation.

Families and children should have been the focal point of Title X all along. However, previous requirements were lax in supporting them. The new revisions require the reporting of any woman or child who is experiencing abuse, violence, or trafficking, something that facilities like Planned Parenthood have not done in the past. The regulations will also encourage families to be involved in their child's family planning decisions. Currently, 37 states have a similar statute in place but 36 of those states allows a judge to bypass the law. Twenty-six states allow a minor to independently receive birth control at the age of 12. The Trump Administration realized that the sexual indoctrination of our children has continued behind the backs of parents for far too long.

Other revisions uphold the conscience rights of individuals and employers. The previous regulation that required all Title X grantees to refer for abortion is completely eliminated. The referral of abortion services is now prohibited when counseling on family planning methods. This places the focus on more positive and safe actions, rather than killing an unborn child which can have life-long effects on the mother.

For every PP “clinic” there are 20 that provide legitimate family planning services. Dubuque County Right to Life, Inc. applauds President Trump and HHS for their diligence in upholding pro-life values and allowing families to flourish.

Continue Defending LIFE – Our Fight Isn’t Over

Perhaps you've heard the news that the president of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is stepping down, and Minnesota is taking over Iowa's branch of Planned Parenthood.

The media is also reporting that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's revenue had dropped by over $4 million recently – and that was before Iowa reduced public funding for abortion providers last year.

There's no doubt this is welcome news. You are making a major difference in the fight for life, and Iowa is winning the war for protecting the unborn!

But these same news reports have a hidden warning.

In them, Planned Parenthood hints that while they've been losing on Capitol Hill and closing clinics in Iowa, they're working on other ways to promote abortion, especially in rural areas. Through the "Tele-Med" abortions and mail-order abortion pills, Planned Parenthood isn't going away; they're just going underground.

This is all the more reason we need to keep up the winning momentum. To make sure Iowa remains a state where the people stand up and let their voices and their votes be heard, that we will defend life.

- Page 04 - Forced to Lie About Assisted Suicide, by Wesley J. Smith (Wesley J. Smith is an author and a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center on Human Exceptionalism)

The assisted-suicide movement often lies, prevaricates, spins, word engineers, and obfuscates in its advocacy memes.

Lying in debates is one thing. But legally forcing doctors and public officials to participate in these tactics in their official capacities is quite another. Yet, that is what many assisted-suicide laws and legislative proposals do.

Take for example, lying on death certificates. Several state laws legalizing assisted suicide force MDs who assist suicides to falsify death certificates — an important public document needed for the accrual of accurate vital statistics — that the cause of death was the underlying disease and not a self-administered drug overdose.

Now, a Minnesota legalization proposal goes there. From SF 1572:

Subd. 17. Death certificate.

Unless otherwise prohibited by law, the attending physi- cian may sign the qualified patient’s death certificate. The qualified patient’s underlying terminal illness shall be listed as the cause of death.

Think about this: MDs compelled by law to lie in order to prevent transparency, inhibit oversight, and thwart accurate independent scientific studies of the deadly practice.

It gets worse. The bill would specifically legalize assisted suicide — doctors prescribing drugs for the purpose of a patient taking them to cause an overdose death — but claims mendaciously it isn’t legalizing assisted suicide:

Subd. 16. Medical aid in dying.

(a) Nothing in this section authorizes a physician or any other person to end a patient’s life by lethal injection, mercy killing, assisting a suicide, or any other active euthanasia. (b) Any action taken according to this section does not constitute causing or assisting another person to commit suicide. But that is exactly what it does!

And to make sure the mendacity sticks, the term “assisted suicide” is banned from use in public communications, documents, and pronouncement:

c) No report of a public agency may refer to the practice of obtaining and self-administering life-ending medication to end a qualified patient’s life as suicide or assisted suicide, and shall refer to the practice as medical aid in dying.

This is utterly nonsensical. As a recent AMA Ethics report on the issue noted (my emphasis): “The term ‘physician assisted suicide’ describes the practice with the greatest precision.”

Forcing MDs and public employees to lie and use euphemistic language isn’t just a matter of semantics. It destroys integrity in governance and undermines trust in public institutions. And, it disrespects democratic deliberation.

Assisted-suicide legalization turns thousands of years of medical ethics on its head. It has the potential to shatter family life. By definition, it results in the premature deaths of thousands of people — some of whom might not have died from their diagnosed illness, which sometimes happens. And, it gives the imprimatur of the state to some suicides, which has the potential to increase suicide ideation as it makes suicide prevention more equivocal.

If it is so important to do all that, then call a thing what it is! If you can’t, stop pushing the agenda.

Another Pro-Life Success! Planned Parenthood has been forced to cancel abortion appointments in Arkansas days after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block a law regulating chemical abortions from taking effect, which threatens to shutter two of the state’s three abortion clinics. The appeal was from Planned Parenthood, who was seeking to challenge an Arkansas law requiring chemical abortionists to have hospital admitting privileges or have a formal contract with a physician who has admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and “who would agree,” notes Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier, “to handle all complications…”

Supporters of the law say it is necessary to ensure women can follow-up quickly with medical treatment for any dangerous medical complications that result from their abortions. The abortionists claim obstetricians will not agree to the requirement, forcing their facilities to close down. They also complain about forcing women to travel greater distances to obtain abortions. But pro-lifers say such complaints are more examples of the abortion industry putting business convenience above patient safety. They have warned that chemical abortions, which have grown nearly as common as surgical abortions in recent years, are dangerous to mothers as well as to their babies.

Jerry Cox, president of the Little Rock-based social conservative group Family Council, expressed skepticism that “in the whole state of Arkansas, no one doctor out of 6,000 doctors would contract." He added that the law was necessary because a “woman bleeding shouldn’t have to check herself into an emergency room and have a doctor figure out what the problem is — her records should follow her.”

Heartbeat Law Update

Attorneys representing the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Iowa City’s Emma Goldman Clinic claim the law violates both Roe v. Wade and the Iowa Constitution. They requested the temporary injunction to resolve the “uncertainty” of women seeking abortions.

Attorneys representing the State of Iowa in the lawsuit over the Heartbeat Law have agreed – or “stipulated” – to a temporary injunction prohibiting the law from going into effect on July 1 as scheduled until the full case can be heard in court.

Martin Cannon of the Thomas More Society will represent the State of Iowa in the place of Democratic state Attorney General Tom Miller, and will defend the Heartbeat Law at the anticipated full hearing some months away. He explained in a statement why attorneys consented to the temporary halt in the law’s enforcement:

“I very much appreciate your prayers and support in this challenge before us. After much discussion, considerable thought, and a lot of our own prayers, we have agreed to place the heartbeat bill on hold until the challenge to it can be heard on its merits instead of in the shortened hearing that precedes a temporary injunction.” Choosing this path, Cannon explained, “We’ll get to a proper hearing sooner, and our prospects for ultimate success are better.”

“There would be no First Amendment without the pro-life movement. No one uses it more than we do. And if we go away, it will too.”
