Before arriving at Hampton, McCray served as assistant basketball Shahara Johnson 1 4 coach, with head coach Patty Walsh, for nearby Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Chinyere Ukoh 1 4 Virginia for 10 seasons. While at Oscar Smith, McCray helped lead the Lady Tigers to three Southeastern Championships, four Southeastern District Championships, and eight Eastern Region appearances. He was also head coach of the three-time Boo Williams Virginia AAU Division I Championship basketball team. As head coach of the 12-U team, McCray led them to a ninth place fi nish nationally in 2003 and led the 13-U to a fi fth place national fi nish. McCray is a retired 22-year veteran of the United States Naval Reserves where he participated in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield and is a Beirut Confl ict veteran.
