2017] 277 THE KATZ OUTTA THE BAG: BRINGING NATIONAL SECURITY LETTERS INTO COMPLIANCE WITH THE “REASONABLE EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY” TEST Anees Mokhiber* The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 (“ECPA”) equips the FBI with the power to issue National Security Letters (“NSLs”). The language of the ECPA, however, contemplates an era of electronic communication long since passed. Electronic communication has transformed rapidly with the evolution of computer technology. At present, the outdated form of the ECPA allows the FBI to utilize NSLs to retrieve information in a manner which runs afoul of Fourth Amendment privacy protections. Accordingly, this Comment proposes to amend the ECPA to account for the ongoing evolution of computer technology which powers the transmittal of electronic communications in the modern age. Additionally, this Comment calls for a commitment to legislative adaptability, to ensure that any statute governing electronic communications is up to date with its subject matter. The goal of these proposed amendments is to tighten the investigative scope of NSLs, and ensure the United States citizen of her reasonable expectation of privacy from unreasonable searches and seizures. 1 Writing and Drawing This chapter teaches you how best to write and draw on the eMate 300. There are several methods and tools you can use to enhance recognition, correct mistakes, and manipulate text and drawings. Go through the chapter to find the best tools for your needs. About recognition This section offers a general description of handwriting recognition used on your eMate and discusses some of the factors that may affect how well it recognizes your handwriting. When you write on your eMate, you write in normal printed or cursive characters, as well as numbers, punctuation, and gestures. Often you write English words, but not always. 1 The eMate tries to detect when you are writing English words, abbreviations, and common expressions. It uses a large dictionary to aid in recognizing these things quickly and accurately. When you write things that are neither simple numbers nor English words (such as initials, dates, telephone numbers, file names, or serial numbers) your eMate tries to match the characters you write to the common patterns of these entries. If no such pattern can be discerned, your eMate does its best to recognize the characters individually. Generally speaking, your eMate is somewhat better at recognizing poorly formed characters if they are part of English words (or other items that are in the eMate's dictionary). When you’re writing things such as license plate numbers, you’ll find that extra care in forming your characters neatly contributes to improved accuracy. Your eMate distinguishes characters and words in part by detecting pauses in your writing. -

SETTING UP-Setting up your Macintosh Centris 610 involves these steps: - Plugging in the computer - Connecting a monitor - Connecting the mouse and keyboard - Connecting other devices - Turning the computer on Plugging in the Computer Plug in the Macintosh before connecting anything to it. The plug grounds the computer and protects it from electrical damage while you are setting up. 1. Plug the socket end of the power cord into the recessed power plug (marked with the symbol ) on the back of the computer. 2. Plug the other end of the power cord into a three-hole grounded outlet or power strip. !! WARNING: This equipment is intended to be electrically grounded. Your Macintosh Centris 610 is equipped with a three-wire grounding plug -- a plug that has a third (grounding) pin. This plug will fit only a grounded AC outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact a licensed electrician to replace the outlet with a properly grounded outlet. Do not defeat the purpose of the grounding plug! !! If the computer starts up: If you hear a tone, the computer has started up and you need to turn it off before proceeding. Press and release the power switch on the front panel to turn the computer off. To protect both yourself and the computer from electrical hazards, the computer should remain turned off until you are finished connecting its parts. Installing an Expansion Card If you purchased an expansion card for your Macintosh Centris 610, see "Installing Expansion Cards," page 24, for instructions on installing it. -

"He embodies the true joy of being in the innovation business," said Arthur Yuan, executive director of the Chinese Intellectual Property Resource Center at The John Marshall Law School. "He makes using technology a very cool and very good and pleasant experience so that technology is no longer just a piece of hardware." "Steve Jobs was not only a visionary when it came to technological developments, but also when it came to intellectual property protection," said professor Doris Estelle Long at John Marshall. "Apple under Jobs aggressively used IP to protect its innovations. It often relied on newly emerging doctrines in its quest to translate its technological developments into legally protected market exclusivity.
