1 Chairman’s Report 2016

In last year’s report I commented on the declining number of youngsters playing golf in Glamorgan. Although there is much to be positive about in the qualities of our teams and individual achievements, this trend has continued and the evidence suggests that it has not yet bottomed out. For reasons which are still unclear, golf has declined in popularity as youngsters embrace sports which are currently considered to be ‘sexy’, eg cycling, exhilarating, eg surfing, or effortless, eg playing with their Xboxes.

Once again, I have to appeal to our constituent clubs to address this issue with an even greater sense of urgency. Complacency will only lead to inexorable decline as the laws of economics will dictate that weaker clubs will have to cut back and may even face closure.

Squads’ Results

The Under 12 autumn / winter coaching programme involved 32 boys in 3 squads all coached by Keith Williams at the . During the summer we held four 9 or 10 hole competitions that made up the Under 12s Order of Merit. Sam Peet (Pyle and Kenfig) won on his home course and at Pontardawe; Alex Williams (The Grove) won at Brynhill, and Sean David (Pyle and Kenfig) took the honours at Maesteg. The Order of Merit Plate was secured by Sam Peet with Tom Savill (Glamorganshire) in second place.

The Under 12 County Championship was a full 18 hole event held at Maesteg in September and with a score of 87 Sam Peet won by 3 strokes from Dylan Thomas (Pontardawe).

My thanks go to former Welsh international Matthew Peet for managing the Under 12 programme in recent years. Clearly Sam and his brother Tom have inherited some impressive golfing genes and we will watch their progress with great anticipation. Matthew has decided to assist in running the Under 14s; his role has been taken by Paul Melding (Neath) and I’m sure we wish him great success.

The Under 14 team had an excellent year. Ably captained by Myles Prothero (Maesteg) they drew with Worcestershire at Morlais Castle, lost narrowly to Wiltshire away at Bowood, defeated Somerset at Tall Pines and were leading against Gloucestershire at Aberdare when the weather intervened. Of the 15 players who represented the county in 2015, no less than 10 are available this year and 5 next year, so we can face the immediate future with a degree of optimism.

The Under 14 County Championship took place alongside the Under 12s at Maesteg in September and the winner was Lewis John (Whitchurch) with two excellent rounds of 75 and 76 from Tom Peet (Pyle and Kenfig).

The Under 14s Order of Merit comprised 9 events around the County of which points accumulated at the top 7 events counted. The winner was Tom Peet with Lewis John in second place, followed by Jacob Harrington-Wara (), Myles Prothero and Dylan Thomas.

2 Without doubt, Tom Peet provided the outstanding individual performances of 2015: he won the Welsh Under 13 Championship at St Mellons with a score of 76 and followed this up when becoming the youngest ever winner of the Ben Williams Trophy at Whitchurch in August with a 73. As a matter of interest, brother Sam was runner-up. It is a great pity that Matthew and his wife Penny restricted themselves to only two children! In recognition of his progress, Tom has been selected to play for in the Quadrangular Tournament in Ireland later this month.

My thanks go to Roger Chaffey for managing and taking ownership of the Under 14s in 2015 and I know that he is looking forward immensely to the challenges of this year.

The Under 16 team had an excellent season, beginning with a 12-3 victory against Worcestershire at Morlais Castle. This was followed by a 12½-2½ demolition of Somerset at Pyle and Kenfig, a convincing win against Gwent 9½-5½ at Bryn Meadows and a 10-5 victory against Wiltshire at Chippenham. However, in the final match, and deprived of three regular players, we lost 9½-5½ to a powerful Gloucestershire side at the Vale of Glamorgan. Consequently the Under 16s came second in their Channel League.

In the SWBGA U15 / U16 inter-county championship at Tredegar Park we won both sections comfortably with Jamie Pickering (Royal Porthcawl) winning the individual with a score of 73. Unfortunately the Welsh Boys Under 16 inter-county event was cancelled due to lack of interest (and is, of course, confirmation of golf’s current problems).

The Under 16 Order of Merit was won by Kurtis Harrington-Wara (Cardiff) after a season- long tussle with Sam Mayer (Whitchurch) which went down to the last counting event, the Ben Williams Trophy at Whitchurch.

My thanks go to Martin Price (Glamorganshire) who has managed the Under 16s with great distinction. Martin has been the driving force behind almost all the changes which have transformed both Under 14s and Under 16s golf in the county, particularly the introduction of Order of Merit events. David Watkins () will replace Martin and he will, no doubt, attempt to emulate Martin’s achievements.

The Under 18 team continued to excite and disappoint in equal measure. For administrative reasons, matches tend to be played in the congested August period and this impacts on selection. For example, against Wiltshire at Whitchurch in August, Steve Joseph made over 20 phone calls before being able to field a team. The players excelled and lost narrowly 8-7 - against the English County Boys’ Champions! Then against Somerset at Isle of Wedmore, having halved the foursomes, we won all ten singles for a remarkable 12½-2½ victory. Conversely, against Gloucestershire only two weeks later, we lost the singles 8-2 to suffer a heavy 10-5 defeat. In the final match against Gwent at the Gower Golf Club the result was a halved match - an appropriate end to an inconsistent season.

Perhaps the best example of this inconsistency came in the annual Severnside Tournament hosted by Worcestershire at the Moseley Golf Club. We defeated Gloucestershire 5 games to 2 games. Then we beat Gwent 4-3, before losing 5½-1½ to Worcestershire who had lost

3 both their previous matches 6-1! Gloucestershire therefore won the Severnside on a countback and we were left to reflect on a lot of poor decision making.

My thanks go to Jordan Golley (Clyne) who captained the Under 18s admirably and also made his debut for the men’s Channel League team. Jordan came second in the Under 18s Order of Merit behind the winner, Matt Roberts from the Vale of Glamorgan.

Sadly, John King, the Under 18 manager and for many years a great supporter of Junior golf in Glamorgan, has finally decided to retire. He will be missed. However, he hands over to Steve Joseph, who has provided wonderful support in recent years.

Individual Performances

The Spring Meeting was held at Coed-y-Mwstwr where the overall winner was Sam Mayer with an excellent score of 72. The top 16 were then eligible for the Junior Matchplay Championship, which was held at Caerphilly Golf Club in July. The tournament had to be played over two weekends due to inclement weather and culminated in a final between Matt Roberts and Luke Colwill (Neath) with Luke emerging the winner by one hole. The quality of the match was outstanding and included 9 birdies and 2 eagles.

The County Junior Championship was held at Mond Valley and was won by Kurtis Harrington-Wara with a score of 147 strokes, 4 in front of Jamie Pickering with Harry Frazer (Pennard) in third place. The team event was won by Neath represented by Elis Hopkins, Ryan Nedza and Dylan Matthews.

The Junior League in the East was won by the Vale of Glamorgan and in the West by Neath. In the final played at Royal Porthcawl in late October the Vale triumphed by 3 matches to 0. Indeed, Neath deserve sympathy for their travails that week: playing in the Welsh Club Junior Championship at Builth Wells, one of their players signed for the wrong score. This meant that they were relegated to third place, 3 strokes behind the winners, the Vale of Glamorgan. I’m sure that we all wish the Vale the best of good fortune when they play in the European Club Junior Championship in Spain.

However, another indicator of declining participation in Junior golf is the regularity with which our clubs fail to field junior teams and / or fulfil fixtures. As a result, we are continually rejigging the junior leagues to accommodate the declining player base.

The number of youngsters who applied for county coaching in 2015 / 2016 just about reached the 80 plus of last year, but fell far short of the 172 applications in 2007. Every applicant is welcome and experiences first class coaching from Clive Coombs and Keith Williams (both Vale of Glamorgan), John Peters (Southerndown), Peter Evans (Royal Porthcawl) and Simon Swales (). I thank them for their long and accomplished service to this county.

Our most successful junior golfer is Tim Harry (Vale of Glamorgan), who played for the GB and I Boys team against the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy at

4 Royal Dornoch. Tim scored 3 points out of 4 including winning both his singles matches. Four years ago when Tim played in a men’s match against Cornwall, the then County Captain Ian Flower paid him the ultimate accolade: ‘he rips it’! Long may it continue. Tim also played for Wales in the Home Internationals and with Tom Davies (Morlais Castle) represented Wales in the European Boys Team Championship in Finland.

Tom Davies, Jordan Golley, Gareth Morgan (Clyne) and Aled Greville (Vale of Glamorgan) played for Wales in the Boys Home Internationals at Conwy Golf Club.

Aled Greville and Jamie Pickering played for Welsh Boys U16s in the Quadrangular Tournament in Scotland and in the match against England U16s at .

Once again I must thank all the members of the Glamorgan Juniors’ Committee for their continued commitment and support. A particular debt of gratitude to Teg Bevan for organising the Spring Meeting and Junior Championship, and always volunteering his services when the need arises. And also to Martin Price for communicating our youngsters’ achievements so thoroughly on the Glamorgan website.

Finally, of course, thanks to all of you, the junior leaders in our clubs, for putting the needs of our youngsters before your personal interests. Without your grassroots support, none of this would be possible.

6 JUNIOR LEAGUE MATCHES - REPORT 2015

2015 has proved to be another tough year for Junior league golf. The leagues have been in place for a number of years and provide an opportunity for Junior golfers to represent their club and, if successful, represent Glamorgan in the Welsh Inter Club Championship. Sadly, seven clubs who entered the leagues at the start of the season were unable to complete all of their fixtures.

East League A: Winners - Llanishen

East League B: Winners - Cardiff

East League C: Winners - Vale Resort

With three leagues in the East, the best ranked second place team qualified for the semi- finals, this being Cottrell Park, on their return to the leagues.

West League A: Winners - Maesteg, Runners-up - Gower

West League B: Winners - Neath, Runners-up - Pyle and Kenfig

In the area finals, Neath defeated Pyle and Kenfig with defeating Cottrell Park. The Vale Resort then defeated Neath in the County Inter Club final at Royal Porthcawl at the end of October, having also won the Welsh Inter Club Junior Championship.

I would like to thank all of the Junior Organisers who give up considerable time to organise their Junior sections and teams, helping to build interest in the game with young people, and all of the clubs for making their courses available to their junior golfers. A number of clubs continued to use e-mail to return results this year.

The County Union is extremely grateful to all the clubs who hosted the playoff matches for allowing these to be played on their courses during September and October at a busy time for greenkeepers and clubs with finals and course renovation works.

WEST One - league 9 JUNIORS’ LEAGUE RULES 2016

RULES APPLICABLE TO INTER-CLUB TOURNAMENT FOR JUNIOR TEAM AND EAST v WEST MATCHES. ALL MATCHES MUST BE PLAYED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THESE RULES.

AS AMENDED FEBRUARY 2015

DEFINITION A junior shall be a member of an affiliated club who has not reached the age of 18 years at 0.00 hours on January 1 st of the year of the tournament. The player must have a current (not suspended) CONGU® Handicap.

1 Eligible Clubs The Tournament shall be played between Clubs affiliated to the Glamorgan County Golf Union and such other clubs as may be admitted at the discretion of the County Junior Executive Committee (subsequently the Committee). A Club may only enter one team.

2 Players A player, being a junior as defined, may only represent the affiliated Club that is his / her HOME CLUB for handicap (as defined in the CONGU® UHS System). Having represented that Club in the Inter-Club Tournament he / she shall not be eligible to play for another Club in the same Tournament.

3 Rules of Golf The matches in the Tournament shall be played according to the Rules of Golf, as approved by the Royal & Ancient Rules Limited, and the Local Rules and By-Laws of the Club on whose course the match is being played.

4 Leagues The Committee shall allocate and divide the Club teams into Areas and as many Leagues as appropriate. Teams shall play home and away matches against all other Clubs in their League.

5 Period and Format The League Tournament shall run from March 1 to August 31. Each match will take the form of three foursomes games and one reserve foursomes game. The games will be played off handicap from the men’s medal tees. The handicap allowance will be half the difference between the combined handicaps. The maximum handicap allowance permitted for each player is 18. Players with higher handicaps may compete but off 18. Girls’ handicaps shall be adjusted where appropriate according to the CONGU system in use at the time. (This adjustment may mean a girl off 18 having a higher adjusted handicap in the match. Girls off more than 18 must be reduced to 18 and then any SSS adjustment added.) Pairings may be selected in any combination but the playing order shall be the lowest aggregate handicap first and so on. The reserve match is excluded from this requirement, and a maximum handicap of 24 will apply in this match only .

6 Scoring of Results All League matches, area play-off matches, the League final and the East v West match shall be decided by match play. Strokes shall be taken according to the men’s card. In League matches teams score two points for each game won, one point for each halved game, with tied matches (3-3) allowed. In all other matches a straight overall win / loss shall be recorded as the result (with ties resolved as in 7 below). Individual game points do not count.

10 7 Resolution of Ties On completion of the League Tournament, in the area play-offs and in the League final, ties shall be resolved by the result(s) of the reserve game(s), scored ½ point for a win and a ¼ point for a halved game. In completed Leagues, where a tie is not resolved by the total points gained by the reserves of the teams involved, the results of the matches between the tying teams shall be used and if a tie still persists, lots shall be drawn. In play-offs and the League final, ties that are not resolved by the reserve game, “holes up” shall be used, including the reserve match. If the tie is still not resolved the top pair from each team shall play a “sudden death” play-off.

8 Arranging Fixtures The date and time when a match is to be played shall be mutually agreed between the Club Junior Organisers. Failing such an agreement, a match shall be played on a date to be decided by the Committee, who will give 10 days’ notice of the date to the respective Club Junior Organisers, unless the closing date in 5 above dictates otherwise.

9 Match Results The Junior Organiser of the winning team is responsible for completing fully and submitting the pro-forma result cards. Sending the results by e-mail is also acceptable. In the case of a halved match the home team organiser is responsible. Individual handicaps must be recorded on the result cards. Girl competitors shall be clearly identified on the card as (F). The result shall be posted to the Area Junior League Secretary within 48 hours of the match being completed.

10 Electronic DMDs The use of such devices is allowed if the home team’s club, or the club of the course on which the match is being played, has introduced a Local Rule to that effect. Note: If a DMD is used when no such Local Rule is in force or if the device used is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect play (gradient, windspeed, temperature etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is used.

11 Caddies Caddies are not allowed in team matches unless prior approval has been obtained from the Committee. Such approval will only be given in exceptional circumstances. Relatives / spectators should not act as forecaddies.

12 General Relatives / spectators should maintain a reasonable distance between themselves and the players and must keep at least 20 yards behind play at all times.

13 Breach of Rules The Committee shall adjudicate on any breach of the above rules that comes to its attention, or is reported to the Committee Chairman in writing. In all cases the Committee’s decision, ratified by the County’s Executive Committee where appropriate, shall be final.

14 East v West Match This shall consist of eight games. In the event of a tie, providing weather conditions permit, each Team Captain shall nominate one player to take part in a “sudden death” play-off.

11 GLAMORGAN COUNTY GOLF UNION 2015

Under 12 Report

We had over 25 boys involved with the coaching over the winter months. They all received 5 two hour sessions with Keith Williams at the Vale Resort. I cannot speak highly enough of Keith and the quality of the coaching he gives to these boys.

During the summer we ran 9 and 10 hole competitions at various courses, which again proved a great success; the boys thoroughly enjoy these. The results were as follows:

Pyle and Kenfig

Winner: Sam Peet Runner-up: Elliot Watkins / Harri Davies

Brynhill

Winner: Alex Williams Runner-up: Tom Savill / Josh Chamberlain

Pontardawe

Winner: Sam Peet Runner-up: Tom Savill / Sean David

Maesteg

Winner: Sean David Runner-up: Josh Chamberlain

We also ran the Order of Merit Trophy. This was won by Sam Peet of Pyle and Kenfig GC.

Once again we held the Under 12s County Championship, this year at Maesteg GC, who were fantastic in their support. Can I say a huge thank you to all concerned in making the day a great success. We had a good entry and the weather was kind to us eventually. The championship was won by Sam Peet with a gross score of 84 and runners-up were Dylan Thomas and Tom Savill. All the boys who played did very well and should be very proud of their progress.

Once again, I have really enjoyed helping and watching these boys develop; it will be great to watch them as they get older and move through the age groups in County golf.

Can I say a personal thank you to all who have helped me during the year. I look forward to another season in 2016.

Matthew Peet, U12 Manager

12 GLAMORGAN COUNTY GOLF UNION 2015

Under 14 Report

2015 proved very successful for a young U14 side. At the beginning of the year, 30 boys enrolled in the County Coaching Scheme and 15 of those represented the County in matches against Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. The side was excellently captained by Myles Prothero of Maesteg and ended the season undefeated with drawn matches against Worcestershire and Wiltshire and an emphatic victory against Somerset which looked likely to be repeated against Gloucestershire before the weather intervened and a potential win had to be abandoned after the morning foursomes. Lewis John, Henri Bowen, Jacob Harrington-Wara, Tom Peet and Oliver Reeves were ever present in the side. Sam Peet, Dylan Thomas, Myles and Joshua Davies missed one game only - Sam only because the match against Somerset was restricted to 8 a side. Josh was probably the most successful member in terms of games won, winning all three singles and losing just one foursomes match. Throughout the year we were able to blood 10 boys who are eligible to play for the U14 side in 2016. Unfortunately, Myles, Lewis, Henri, Josh and Jacob will be moving to the U16 squad in 2016. Our loss is their gain. I would like to thank all five for their contribution throughout the year, wish them every success in the future and commend every one of them to the U16 selectors in the forthcoming year.

Throughout the year, the County’s Spring Meeting plus the U14 County Championship were supplemented by the Ben Williams Trophy, the Junior Neath Bell and Junior Open Days at Glamorganshire, The Grove, Pyle, Southerndown and Royal Porthcawl to formulate a Junior U14 Order of Merit table. The U14 winner at the Spring Meeting was Jacob Harrington-Wara (Ceri Vaughan Jones winning the net prize for the age group) and the County U14 Champion was Lewis John. Overall, Tom Peet was a runaway winner of the Order of Merit.

Tom Peet’s achievements throughout the year deserve special mention. He started off by winning the age group section of the Junior Neath Bell early in the season and followed that with a remarkable run in August when he won the Welsh U13 Championship, came 4th in the U15 Championship and was then the overall winner of the Ben Williams Trophy - the youngest ever winner of this prestigious event. Performances at the Welsh U13 Championship also require special mention. Apart from Tom winning, his younger brother Sam was runner-up and two others of the Glamorgan team, Dylan Thomas and Tom Savill, shared third place. A commendation, I would say, for the Glamorgan County Junior Coaching set-up.

I would like to say that without exception, all those boys who represented the County at U14 level during 2015 were a credit to the County, their golf clubs, the game of golf in general and, most importantly, to their parents. This latter group also deserves my own personal thanks and appreciation. Wherever we go: team matches, championships, Order of Merit and other events, parents are always there supporting and encouraging. We all owe them a huge debt. One final, but vital, thank you must go to Matthew Peet, who has been a rock to me in organising, advising and being an overall good guy in ensuring that my first year’s involvement in managing the County U14 side has been such a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

GLAMORGAN COUNTY GOLF UNION 2015

Under 16 Report

2015 began with our U16 Squad enjoying a good positive winter coaching programme with Clive Coombs at the Vale Resort. This was supplemented with two productive short game sessions with Peter Evans at Royal Porthcawl and so we came to April with a large number of players registered to play in our Order of Merit events and a strong squad to tackle our friendly match with Worcestershire followed by the four U16 Channel League matches.

The U16 Order of Merit began at Coed-y-Mwstwr where Sam Mayer (Whitchurch) was the overall winner of the Spring Meeting with a score of 72. Sam followed this up with wins in the Junior Neath Bell and The Grove Junior Open and so he was setting a hot pace at the top of the Order of Merit with a maximum 135 points after 3 events. However, Kurtis Harrington-Wara (Cardiff) wasn't going to let Sam have it all his own way and he stormed into contention by winning the Royal Porthcawl and Glamorganshire Junior Opens before producing the best score at Mond Valley in the County Championship, becoming our Junior County Champion in the process. In the final three events there was a win for Andrew Brisbane (Southerndown) at Pyle and Kenfig and Sam Mayer picked up maximum points on offer at Southerndown before Kurtis sealed the Order of Merit by winning the U16 section of the Ben Williams Trophy at Whitchurch.

Six U16 players qualified from the Spring Meeting for the County Junior Matchplay Championship at Caerphilly. Kurtis Harrington-Wara and Harry Frazer (Pennard) reached the semi-finals of another great event which was eventually won by U18 player Luke Colwill of Neath.

This year our U16 team was managed by myself and David Watkins. Once again, my thanks go to Dave for all his hard work, enthusiasm and sound advice. The matches kicked off with a comfortable 12-3 win in the friendly against Worcestershire at Morlais Castle Golf Club and so the team approached the Channel League matches in confident mood. There were three matches in 10 days: wins over Somerset 12½-2½, Gwent 9½-5½ and Wiltshire 10-5, setting up a winner take all match with Gloucestershire, who had also won their first three matches. Unfortunately, due to a fixture clash we were without three of our regular players and despite a valiant effort our boys went down 9½-5½ to Gloucestershire at the Vale Resort national course and therefore finished second in the U16 Channel League.

In the SWBGA U15/U16 inter-county tournament at Tredegar Park, our teams won the U15 and U16 sections and so we won overall for the second year running. Jamie Pickering (Royal Porthcawl) won the individual competition with a score of 73. Unfortunately, the Welsh Boys U16 inter-county event was cancelled due to a lack of entries.

On the international scene, Aled Greville played for the Welsh Boys team in the Home Internationals. Aled and Jamie Pickering played for Wales in the U16 Quadrangular Tournament in April and in the U16 match against England in August. Aled and Sam Mayer played for Wales U15 in the annual match against Surrey.

15 Once again, my thanks go to all the boys and their parents for their commitment to County golf, to all the clubs that provided tournaments for our Order of Merit and finally to those clubs who made their courses available for us to play our County matches.

On a personal note, it has been a pleasure to manage the team this year and I wish all the boys moving to the U18 section all the best for 2016.

Next year’s U16 squads are already taking shape and 2016 promises to be another exciting season.

Under 18 Report

It was a real up and down season for the U18 Team. Our first match was against Wiltshire, the English County Boys Champions. After making 20+ calls we eventually fielded a young team and lost narrowly by 8 games to 7. We then played Somerset at Isle of Wedmore with a more experienced team and after halving the morning foursomes we won all ten singles, a remarkable achievement in any Channel League match, in the afternoon to win overall 12½-2½. We were now on a roll and played Gloucestershire at Knowle next and were confident after beating Gloucestershire in the Severnside (more of that later). After winning the morning foursomes 3-2 we went down in the singles by 8-2 so suffered a heavy 10-5 loss. Our last U18 Channel League match was against Gwent at Gower and we went down in the foursomes by 3-2, but in the afternoon we won 5½ of the first 7 singles to eventually end up halving the overall match.

In the middle of the U18 Channel League matches in August we played in the annual Severnside Tournament at Moseley Golf Club. We went with an experienced team and in the first match we beat Gloucestershire 5-2. On the second morning we took on Gwent and beat them 4-3. So the Severnside title was in our pockets with only a young inexperienced Worcestershire team, who had lost both of their first two matches by 6-1, standing in our way. We were outplayed in the last match by Worcestershire and went down to a heavy 5½ -1½ defeat, handing the Severnside title to a surprised Gloucestershire team.

It was particularly pleasing to introduce a number of Glamorgan U16 players into the U18 team during the year and hopefully all the U18 players will have benefited from the County experience gained in 2015. Jordan Golley (Clyne) captained the U18 team really well and again maintained an excellent record in U18 Channel League golf. Joe Lukaris (Creigiau) was unbeaten during the season. We will also not forget Luke Colwill’s (Neath) 3 birdies to finish, including a 350 yard drive on the par 5 18th in his match against Welsh Boys International Laurence Vargas in the Severnside to beat Gwent. I think Laurence is still in shock and was an absentee in the Glamorgan v Gwent U18 Channel League match - perhaps he is still in the ditch on the right hand side of the 18th fairway at Moseley!

The team was managed this year by myself and John King. My thanks go to John as well as to Whitchurch and Gower Golf Clubs for hosting our home fixtures.

The Glamorgan boys selected for the Welsh Boys Home International Team were Tom Davies, Gareth Morgan, Aled Greville and Jordan Golley. Tom and Tim Harry were also selected to represent Wales in the 6-strong team that played in the European Boys Championship in July. Tim was also again selected for the Jacques Leglise team and Welsh Mens Home International Team. We wish all these and other U18 players well who will be leaving U18 County golf this year.

Steve Joseph, U18 Manager

Juniors’ Meetings Results 2015

Spring Meeting, Coed-y-Mwstwr Golf Club, 8th April

A Spring Meeting with good weather and a warm welcome from the Coed-y-Mwstwr Golf Club were the ingredients for a great day’s golf. The course, which is now 20 years old, gave the boys a testing day out and everyone was very complimentary about the general condition and excellent greens. It was a great start to the season.

The Under 18 Division was won by Matt Roberts (Vale of Glamorgan) with a 73, followed by Luke Colwill (Neath), also with a 73 but with an inferior back nine holes.

The Under 16 Division was won by Sam Mayer (Whitchurch) with a fine 72. He also won the Easter Trophy, followed by Harry Frazer (Pennard) with a 73. Both lads are stalwart members of the Under 16 Team.

The Under 14 Division was won by Jacob Harrington-Wara (Cardiff) with a gross 80 followed by Myles Prothero (Maesteg) with an 81.

23 Glamorgan County Junior Championship, Mond Valley Golf Club, 31st July

Mond Valley proved an excellent test for the 2015 County Junior Championship, and Cardiff’s Kurtis Harrington-Wara passed the test with flying colours. It is rare that a Junior Division player wins the County Championship but Kurtis’ rounds of 73 and 74 gave him the title by 4 strokes from Jamie Pickering (Royal Porthcawl), with Harry Frazer (Pennard) 1 stroke further back in 3rd. The course tested the players’ concentration with 5 of the most difficult of the 18 holes on the back 9. Unusually, a par 3 (the 13th) proved to be the hardest in both rounds, although in the afternoon Jack Thomas recorded a hole-in-one! Kurtis birdied both par 3s on the back 9 in Round 1 but had a 6 on the 13th in Round 2! It is a tribute to his resilience that this setback did not prevent him going on to win. The Neath team of Elis Hopkins, Ryan Nedza and Dylan Matthews won the team event.

The Mond Valley Club contributed hugely to the success of the Championship. They were excellent hosts, providing a course in excellent condition. Also, the clubhouse staff worked tirelessly, ensuring that players’ and officials’ needs were efficiently catered for.

The Glamorgan County Golf Union has very carefully considered its responsibilities to the children participating in golf events they arrange, and has produced the following Policy Document. The document supported by underpinning Procedure Documents sets out the Standards the County wish to uphold in safeguarding the welfare of children committed to our care when they participate in golf events organized on their behalf. This Document recognizes the policies set out in Guidelines for Safeguarding Children in Golf (the “Guidelines”) prepared by the various National Organizations.

POLICY STATEMENT

The Glamorgan County Golf Union recognise that children have a unalienable right to protection and have their particular needs understood and addressed. They acknowledge its duty of care to safeguard the welfare of all children (defined as any young person under the age of 18) involved in golf events they organise. It is the responsibility of the Executive Committee to ensure that the Policies reflect the spirit and intent of the Guidelines in respect of all occasions where children are in their care. Further that all persons acting on their behalf that assist in the organisation and running events are fully aware of the Policies and their implications.

Policy Aims

• To provide children with appropriate safety and protection whilst in our care and also help them to enjoy their experience of the sport. • To reassure parents that their children will receive the best practicable care possible whilst participating in County activities. • To provide support to staff and volunteers to make informed and confident responses to specific child protection issues and to fulfil their roles effectively.

KEY PRINCIPLES

• The welfare of children is paramount. • All children within Golf, regardless of age, gender, ability, disability, race, religious belief or sexual orientation, have the right to be protected from abuse. • All suspicions and allegations of abuse and poor practice will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately. • All children have the right to be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect at all times. • All staff and volunteers working in golf have a responsibility to report concerns to the designated County Welfare Officer.

• All County Officials, volunteers, coaches and referees need to understand their role and responsibility with regard to the duty of care and protection of children and young people. 26 • Individuals will receive support through education and training to be aware of and understand best practice and how to manage any welfare or child protection issues that may come to light. • Where necessary we will work in partnership with parents to review and implement child protection and welfare procedures.

Our policy and procedures are based on the above principles and UK and international legislation and government guidance and take the following into consideration:

• The Children Act 1989 and 2004. • The Data Protection Act 1994 & 1998. • The Police Act 1997. • The Human Rights Act 1998. • The Protection of Children Act 1999. • Caring for the young and vulnerable – Home Office Guidance for preventing the abuse of trust 1999. • The Criminal and Court Services Act 2000. • What to do if you are worried a child is being abused 2005. • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2006. • The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. • Any subsequent legislation relating to child protection would implicitly be incorporated into this document.

Responsibilities & Communication

• Our Child Protection Policy will be available to all members of the County Organisations, parents, staff, volunteers and participants via the Organisations’ Websites. • The Policy will be reviewed every three years by the Executive Committees, and amended as appropriate. Changes in Legislation and recommended best practices from National governing bodies will be incorporated where appropriate. • The Executive Committees have responsibility for ensuring that the policy and procedures are implemented, including taking any appropriate disciplinary action necessary. • The designated County Welfare Officer has responsibility for responding to any allegations, concerns or child protection incidents, passing information to the appropriate National Governing Body Lead Child Protection Officer and informing the appropriate County Officers. • Parents have a responsibility to work together with the County Organisations in implementing procedures and providing their children with the necessary information to safeguard themselves.
