U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Program

Attention Members of the Class of 2016:

Representatives of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of General Counsel (OGC) will be at King Hall August 26th from noon to 1:00 pm in Room 2306 to recruit candidates for its 2016-17 Legal Honors Program.

Come learn about this rare and excellent opportunity to launch a career as a federal government attorney. The Legal Honors Program is HUD's only hiring program for entry-level attorneys.

The Legal Honors Program is designed for law students graduating from J.D. and LLM programs, and recent law school graduates completing a judicial clerkship. Subject to appropriations, approximately 10-20 Legal Honors positions are available annually in Headquarters and Field Offices. OGC is a nationwide organization comprised of 400 attorneys in Headquarters in Washington, D.C., 10 Regional offices and 35 Field offices. Successful candidates begin work in August or September and participate in a 14-month appointment that may lead to a permanent position, pending bar admission and successful completion of the Legal Honors' appointment. During the Program, Legal Honors are assigned mentors, are given the opportunity to rotate to other offices within OGC, and participate in additional training and monthly discussions to enhance their program experience and develop their legal abilities. The Legal Honors Program is highly competitive and candidates are selected on the basis of merit. Selection considerations include many factors, such as: academic achievement; law review and other publication work; extracurricular activities such as moot court competitions and legal clinics; employment history; and participation in activities related to HUD's mission.

For more information about the Legal Honors Program, including Application Procedures, please see: http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/documents/huddoc?id=Legal_Honors_Booklet_2016.pdf. For your convenience, here's a link to the Legal Honors Application Form that must accompany the other required Application materials: http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/documents/huddoc? id=LegalHonorsApp_2016.pdf. Legal Honors Applications must be postmarked by Friday, September 4, 2015.

OCI BIDDING TIPS

Bidding for OCI, Off-Campus and Resume Collections opened June 19th. Before you can place bids, you need to upload documents in your Documents section. The "Apply" button will only appear once you have uploaded all the documents an employer is requesting. If an employer has requested a document that you have not uploaded it will say "not selected" in the Bid/Application Details area of the posting; once uploaded a drop-down menu will appear in the place of "not selected". Some employers will ask for "Other Documents"; the other documents requested are listed in the "Additional Requests" section of the posting.

Symplicity allows you to store a maximum of 20 documents at a time. Maximum file size per document is 500kb. You can delete cover letters once you have bid for an employer to make room to upload more documents. Deleted documents remain attached to your bids.

Many employers request transcripts. Official transcripts may be over the document size limit so it is recommended that you create and upload an unofficial transcript. Copy your transcript from SIS Web and paste it into a Word document; be sure your name is at the top of the transcript. Once saved you can upload it to Symplicity. When uploading, label law school transcripts as "Unofficial Transcripts" and non-law school transcripts as "Other Document." NOTE: You can only have one "Other Document" and one "Unofficial Transcript" uploaded at a time. If an employer is requesting multiple 'other documents' or transcripts you may need to consolidate some documents; usually you would want to consolidate transcripts.

Is there an advantage to bidding early? No. But do not wait until the last minute to complete your applications in case you have questions that you did not anticipate about Symplicity or bidding. Additionally, Symplicity tends to run slow when many students are logged in at once. If you are in the middle of doing a bid and the deadline passes, Symplicity will not allow you to complete your bid. Once the bidding deadline passes it is not possible to change, submit, or withdraw bids.

We have also found that those in a hurry often make mistakes, which can result in application materials being discarded by the employer. Please review you application materials carefully. Every year students accidentally upload cover letters addressed to the wrong employer. Please remember to check all of your application materials carefully.

Employers do not have access to student bids during the bidding period. The day after the bidding deadline is when employers receive access to application materials. Although they will have access to your application materials after the bidding deadline they cannot see when you placed your bid or how you ranked your bid.

The application period for the Attorney General's Honors Program for entry-level attorneys applying to the Department of Justice opened on July 31, 2015 and will close on September 8, 2015.

Attorney General's Honors Program (Washington, DC): Deadline September 8, 2015, Symplicity ID # 348679 (for Class of 2015)

The Attorney General's Honors Program is the Department of Justice's recruitment program for entry- level attorneys, and is the only way DOJ hires law students directly out of law school. Judicial law clerks, full-time graduate law program (LLM) students, and law school graduates in qualifying full-time legal fellowships are also eligible. The first opportunity for law students to apply for the Honors Program is the summer before their third year of law school. For the 2015-2016 Attorney General's Honors Program, the on-line centralized electronic application opened on July 31, 2015, and will close on September 8, 2015. The Department of Justice's Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) intends to fill 10 slots this year. Eligibility requirements, participating components, and instructions on how to apply are available at: http://www.justice.gov/legal-careers/entry-level-attorneys. The Attorney General's Honors Program includes the Department's Gaye L. Tenoso Indian Country Fellowship, a three-year Fellowship open to all eligible Honors Program applicants, including current law students graduating in the coming academic year: http://www.justice.gov/legal-careers/attorney-generals-indian-country-fellowship.

ENRD invites 1L and 2L applicants to apply for volunteer (unpaid) legal internships in ENRD's Law Clerk Program. Applications for 8-week internships in Washington, D.C. for Summer 2016 will be accepted from August 1, 2015 to September 6, 2015 (from 2L applicants) and from December 1, 2015 to January 3, 2016 (for 1L and 2L applicants). Admission is rolling, and 2L applicants who are not selected during the first period ending on September 6 will be considered in the second period of applications.

To apply for summer 2016 internships, students must submit the following materials to [email protected] and include "Summer 2016" in the application and the subject line of the email: * Section application form (available at http://www.justice.gov/enrd/internships) * Cover letter stating hours/days available to work * Resume (which includes the country of citizenship) * Writing sample * Copy of most recent transcript (official or unofficial) * Three references with contact information, including telephone and email (letters of recommendation not required)

Post-Bar Jobs with Government Honors Programs: the time to start paying attention is NOW!

Class of 2016 -- It's generally tough to land a government law job straight out of law school. That's true at all levels: city, county, state and federal. One major exception is government "honors" programs (sometimes aka "honors attorneys" and/or "fellows"). In such programs, government agencies hire law students during their third year to start after they take the bar. While there is no guarantee, these "honors" positions typically convert into permanent attorney positions at the agency and even if they don't, they are still excellent stepping stones from which to launch a public sector career. Such programs are prestigious, highly competitive (but not always obsessed with grades) and, while every program is different, most have application deadlines in the fall, including several in August and September. So, if you're interested (and you should be), the time to start paying attention is now!

What should you do? 1) Get to know the opportunities available and note the deadlines. 2) Get prepared to apply. 3) Utilize your campus resources.

The single best source is the "Arizona Handbook" which compiles many of the programs and sorts them for you by deadline or department: http://arizonahandbooks.com/u/ucdlaw

But not every honors program is included in the Arizona Handbook, so if you possibly can, expand your search to include Symplicity and even a good, old-fashioned google query.

While the application instructions for each program vary (and you should read and follow them closely),

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/...322ccf&c=f034fde0-7dee-11e3-bf03-d4ae528eb986&ch=f0baa8a0-7dee-11e3-bf1e-d4ae528eb986[8/25/2015 3:20:13 PM] many honors programs demand things like letters of recommendation or official transcripts that cannot be obtained quickly. Therefore, some advance planning may be required! Approach your recommenders now to request necessary letters. Order official transcripts (if required) now.

Don't be shy! Email or come see Timothy Griffiths ([email protected]) in the Career Services Office for help identifying honors program opportunities, for assistance navigating the process or for feedback on application materials. Also, keep an eye out for on-campus presentations from several of the honors programs (e.g. Aug. 26th = Housing & Urban Development; late September = Presidential Management Fellows). These are great opportunities to learn more, but since the presentations will come fairly close to the deadlines, you should be preparing elements of your application in advance (see above).

Equal Justice Works Fellowships

Each year the Equal Justice Works Fellowship competition selects qualified and passionate lawyers who have developed new and innovative legal projects that can impact lives and serve communities in desperate need of legal assistance. Fellows receive a competitive salary, generous loan repayment assistance, connections to their prominent sponsors, participation in trainings, and additional support during their two-year tenure.

APPLICATION The 2016 Equal Justice Works Fellowship application will be available from July 6 - September 18, 2015.

Develop an innovative project where you will provide effective legal advocacy on behalf of individuals, groups or issues that are not adequately represented within the legal system. Select a nonprofit organization that will host you and your project for two years. Submit your application to Equal Justice Works by 5 p.m. EDT on September 18. Interview with law firms, corporations, foundations, or other companies or individuals who may sponsor your fellowship. Interviews can take place from October to March. Begin your dream job September 2016!

All applications will be judged according to the impact of the proposed project as well as the quality of the host organization and the individual candidate. Other factors taken into consideration are adequacy of supervisor, innovation of the project, groundwork laid, and sustainability of the project. DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION GUIDE TO LEARN MORE!

Some sponsors specify geographic and subject matter preferences, and we recommend interested candidates review these preferences as they begin to develop their project. VIEW SPONSOR PREFERENCES HERE!

Post-Bar Public Interest Law Fellowship Applications

Attention King Hall Class of 2016:

If you are considering applying for a post-bar public interest law fellowship (such as Skadden, Soros and Equal Justice Works), please note that the applications will be due in late summer/early fall! Therefore, the time is NOW to approach potential host organizations and begin developing projects. In fact, several prominent public interest organizations (among them the National Immigration Law Center, Centro Legal de la Raza, Bay Area Legal Aid, DNA-People's Legal Services...) have posted announcements seeking student candidates to partner with. Check Symplicity or those organization's websites for more information.

There are slightly different considerations, deadlines and procedures when applying for each type of fellowship! As an example, see below for initial guidance from Equal Justice Works.

For a general orientation to post-bar public interest fellowships, please watch the February 12, 2015 presentation on that topic under Career Services Presentations on the law school intranet. For individualized counseling by phone, email or in person regarding post-bar public interest fellowships, please contact Timothy Griffiths ([email protected]).
