Introduction

The Career Services Annual Report of the post-graduation activities of the Class of 2014 is presented to the administration and faculty of Marywood University. The report consists of two sections. The first section describes the Career Services Office in terms of mission, goals, objectives, personnel, and services. Section two provides an executive summary of the responses of baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral graduates.

Career Services

Missions, Goals, and Objectives

The mission of the Career Services Office is to support the Enrollment Services and Student Success mission and the University’s academic mission of educating men and women of all ages in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs. A primary goal of the office is collaboration with academic departments to foster the self-development of the student through career planning. Additional goals of the office are to assist the student or alumni in decision- making, transition to the work world, and pursuit of further education. Services are reviewed and evaluated to identify student needs in an evolving society and to meet those needs creatively through on-going program research and planning.

Objectives of the office are to assist the student with: 1. Self-exploration and assessment; 2. Acquisition of vocational and career information; 3. Research on graduate study and employment opportunities; 4. Presentation as a candidate for employment or graduate school; and, 5. Preparation for optimal employment or further education.

Executive Summary

Section Two of this report is organized in three parts. The first summarizes the post- graduation activities of the Class of 2014 alumni by college designation according to status of respondents employed, in graduate school, or involved in a combination of similar activities. Also, average salaries are summarized by degree and college. The baccalaureate alumni survey results then are discussed, including employment and graduate school status, and a discussion of the masters and doctoral degree survey results concludes the report.

Objectives

Alumni post-graduation activities for undergraduate and graduate members of the Class of 2014 are grouped as follows: the proportion of graduates employed in their field of preparation; employed in another field, employed in , employed outside Pennsylvania; employed part-time; pursuing advanced degrees; not seeking employment, and unemployed. Comparisons between 2012 and 2014 results are discussed where data are available. Data are available for previous years. In selected areas, information is provided in three and five-year trends. Questions regarding employment and enrollment status by field for baccalaureate graduates and master’s degree graduates are also addressed in this report.

Methodology

All graduates from July 2013 through June 2014 were included in the survey time period which occurred from May 2014 through June 2015. Graduates were emailed a survey link up to six times, dependent upon Career Services receiving a response; those not responding received a mailed paper survey up to two times during this time period. In addition, LinkedIn was used to obtain employment and graduate school attendance data on graduates who did not respond. The knowledge rate obtained for undergraduates was 68%, for masters graduates 39%, and for doctoral graduates 52%`

Table 1 indicates the percent of alumni employed, in graduate school or involved in a combination of similar activities by college and degree.

Table 2 summarizes the average salaries of graduates by college and degree. At both the undergraduate and graduate level of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences there was an increase in salaries ($35,234 in 2014 vs. $32,187 in 2012) and at the graduate level ($47,272 in 2014 vs. $41,381 in 2012). An increase also occurred in the 2014 masters level in the Reap College of Education and Human Development ($51,866 in 2014 vs. $40,044 in 2012)

Employmment and Educational Status

Figure 1 indicates the status of 2014 baccalaureate graduates in the work force and graduate school one year after graduation. Full-time employment decreased from 44% in 2012 to 42% in 2014. Full-time employed and in graduate school increased from 4% to 7% in 2014 and part-time employed/not in graduate school decreased in 2014 to 6% from 21% in 2012. It should be noted that 49% of those students we had information on (328) were attending graduate school. This is approximately 34 percent of the entire class (478). In addition, the percent of unemployment increased to 6% in 2014 compared to 3% in 2012.

Figure 2 compares the status of 2012 and 2014 undergraduate alumni employed full-time in and out of state and in and out of their major fields. There was a decrease in those employed in PA, In field from 51% in 2012 to 48% in 2014. However, there was an increase in those who found employment Out of PA, In Field from 31% in 2012 to 36% in 2014. The percent of Employed in PA, Out of Field and Employed Out of PA, Out of Fielld followed a similar trend.

Full–time employed and in graduate school presented the largest increase compared to 2012 graduates (8% in 2014 vs. 1% in 2012). The percent of alumni full-time employed annd not in graduate school decreased from 78% in 2012 to 56% in 2014. The unemployed rate increased form 3% in 2012 to 11% in 2014 and other result remained similar to the previous year.

Figure 5 indicates an 3% increase in full-time employment in PA, In Field (72% in 2014 vs. 69% in 2012). Employed Out of PA, In Field .decreased from 26% in 2012 to 22% in 2014. There was a decrease in those who were employed in PA, Out of Field from 4% in 2012 to 1% in 2014 and a 4% increase in Employed Out of PA, Out of Field in 2014.
