CHARLES EPHRIAM RICE Charles, age 78, passed away in his home on January 12, 2005. He was born in Manila, the Philippines on October 22, 1926, to father Carl Ephriam Rice and mother Maria Pilar Salvador. Charles, known as Charlie to all of his friends, had an amazing and interesting life. He grew up in the Philippineswith his 4 brothers and 2 sisters at a time when life was idyllic and easy. Then World War II began and the Japanese invaded the Philippines and occupied it for the next 4 years. His family survived through the occupation and prisoner of war, concentration-style camps, however, little brother Arthur and Grandma Onding had sadly been killed. After the war, he and brother Henry were sent to live with Aunt Ada in Manhattan, Kansas where they both finished high school. The rest of the family came for a little while, then soon returned to the Philippines to rebuild their lives where brothers Fred and George were born. Charlie then went to Northwestern and University ofKansas on a Navy ROTC scholarship. He graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and a Navy Commission, going on to the Navy Supply School and was then assigned to serve as Disbursing Officer on the attack transport, Bayfield. So began a 26 year long Naval career which stretched across the globe, sending him to all corners of the earth. He was stationed at many different Naval stations, Seattle, Detroit, Norfolk, Mechanicsburg, Subic Bay in the Philippines, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Coronado, Saigon, and many different ships including the aircraft carrier Intrepid and battleship Indiana, sister ship to the Missouri. He was Lieutenant Commander on the Intrepid when they were sent to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was soon promoted to the rank of full Commander, the youngest officer to do so. In this time, he also supported his mother and siblings when they returned to the United States after the death of his father in the Philippines. He also revolutionized the system of receiving goods at the Naval base PX's where his system is still used today world wide. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of several different military credit unions. At Coronado, he met Cynthia Anne Harries, and they soon married, relocated to Hawai'i, and had 2 children, Adam and Aimee. He was then in Saigon,Vietnam, and was there at the time of the airlift escapes. Soon, he was able to be reassigned to Pearl Harbor, CINCPAC Fleet as an intelligence officer so he could be with his new family. Charlie retired from the Navy in 1977 and began a second career as a Security Officer, and was soon working at the 'Ilikai Hotel where he continued to work for the next 23 years. He retired from the 'Ilikai only last November and only because he was ill with liver disease. In his military career, he made many friends and long time buddies who still call up to relive those youthful days. Even at the 'Ilikai, he is well-liked and remained good friends with other officers who had retired or moved on to other employment. Everyone who knows Charlie knows him to be very friendly and a great listener. He was never judgmental and only gave advice when asked. He is well-known for his fairness, honesty and integrity. He strove to do everything well, and set the standard for excellent work. There is so much to write about him, not only because he did so many things, but mostly because he never spoke about all of his accomplishments. Above all else, he was always there whenever anyone needed him. He often stayed on late at work to cover for missing coworkers or emergencies at the hotel. For our family, he was always there for all of us. He always helped us without question and with overflowing generosity, and a little bit of advice. He is an amazing source of support for us, he never let us down. Charles passed away on January 12, 2005, exactly seven years after his beloved Cynthia. He is greatly loved and missed. For us, his passing is much too soon. We pray that he continues his adventures in Heaven, joining the rest of his family and friends who have already passed away. Back to their swimming hole at the coconut plantation in Sebu. Charles is survived by son, Adam; daughter, Aimee; grandson, Maverick; sisters, Ellen Nephew, and Norma Kittle; brothers, Robert Henry, and James; and many nieces, nephews and friends. LES RIETFORS Age 53, called to God February 17, 2005. A life-long resident of Kailua, he was born there on October 3, 1951. Les passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness. A loving and devoted husband and father, he is survived by Cheryl, his wife of 25 years, and daughters Ashley (Ken) Casazza of Fresno, California and Amanda. He is also survived by his father Fritz (Lois) Rietfors, Jr. of Kamuela and brothers Ron (Marge) of Kamuela and Ken (Linda) of Kailua as well as six nephews and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Hodde Rietfors. Les was a custom woodworker, cabinetmaker and more recently a master luthier, or maker of fine ukuleles and guitars. His custom crafted pieces have found homes all over the world and a twinkle would shine in his eyes when he talked about his instruments, often referring to them as "his children." Les was happy to play a role by providing the tools for musicians to deliver so much enjoyment to others. Not long ago he and his nephew Justin spent the summer building a guitar together. Les was justifiably proud of the young man, especially of his talents in playing the instrument and his devotion to it. He was able to find much comfort in Justin's music during his final weeks. Les Rietfors will be sorely missed but fondly remembered by those who knew him. Silence comes slowly Sleep embraces the body At last the light comes. [Adv Feb. 25, 2005]
