In June 2019, the library celebrated the launch of its Legacy Society. The Legacy Society recognizes those who have made lifetime gifts of $25,000 or more and those who have indicated that the Lewes Public Library is a beneficiary in their will or estate plans. A special area in the lobby dedicated to the Legacy Society was unveiled, as well as new brochures and webpages acknowledging all members to date. Hugh Leahy, Board President, said “This launch is hugely important for us. Legacy gifts – those made through a will, trust or other estate planning tool – are a key way to support our future. The current endowment is built on such gifts and these donor families are now remembered forever.” The library devotes income from the current endowment fund to help meet operating costs. But there is now an additional need – to build a capital reserve for the long term care of the new building ... For the Next 50 Years. Organized in 1980, the all-volunteer Friends of the Lewes Public Library is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Delaware corporation with the sole function of supporting the Lewes Public Library, itself a separate 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Delaware corporation. Why does the Lewes Library need Friends’ financial support? As an "Independent Library" within the Delaware statewide system, the Lewes Public Library receives only partial funding from Sussex County and the State of Delaware, 52% of total needs in FY19. Friends, as the next largest funder of the Library and its largest private funder, contributed 8%, leaving the remaining 40% for the Library to raise. What did the Friends "buy" with its contribution to the Library? 100% of the books, periodicals, DVDs, and CDs added to the Library's collection; Many of the supplies, materials, and speaker fees needed to support the Library's free classes, workshops, and lectures; Some expenses related to the Library's community outreach activities. Where does Friends raise its funding? Membership dues: the single most important source of Friends' funding; Year-round operation of the Just Between Friends book shop located within the Library; The annual book sale, and specialty book sales held throughout the year; Friends' volunteers who donate 7,000 hours annually, equal to 3.8 full time employees; Donations of books, CDs, and DVDs. H ow essential is Friends to the Library? Over the past 10 years Friends contributed more than $520,000 to the Library. Perhaps more instructive is to compare the final 3 years in the old Library, with the first 3 years in the current Library. During those final 3 years, Friends’ average annual contribution was $52,000, compared with $67,300 during the first 3 years in the new Library, a 29% increase. As the Library’s increased size and state-of-the-art design allows for an enhanced collection and a wider array of programs, funding needs grow, so the Friends’ fundraising must grow as well. Early in 2019, the Margaret and Randall Rollins family issued a challenge matching grant to help retire debt remaining after completion of the new building. All amounts raised through December 2019 towards this debt will be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000.00 The Rollins family has provided extraordinary support for the construction of the new library facility. One of the first gifts received in 2014 came from the family, demonstrating their commitment to the mission of the library and their recognition that a new facility was sorely needed to meet the growing needs of the community for services only available at the library. Their first gift was supplemented by others, making the Rollins family a critical and enabling donor for the new building. In August 2019, we announced the naming of the Main Reading Room of the new library the Margaret Hastings Rollins and Richard Randall Rollins Reading Room. "The residents of Lewes and surrounding communities have embraced the new library and increasingly use the many services and programs we provide. As such, we look with confidence toward a rousing success in meeting the challenge match in 2019," said Board of Commissioners President Hugh Leahy.
