It positsa tendency in Canada toward the reliance upon and the development of thecommunity. This tendency might explain why Canadians focus their attentionon "the imaginative training for citizenship." In the firstchapter, the concept of citizen education 1.0 examined, against thebackground of different citizenship styles. Chapter two considersthe features of Canadian history and society relevant to citizenshipeducation and indicates the nature of adult education'sresponse. In chapter three, the special case of the Canadian Association for AdultEducation is examined. A description of programs and projects follows inthe next three chapters. Chapter four describesprograms related to the needs of immigrants and to ethnic groups. Chapterfive deals with programs that create an informed citizenry and to disposeCanadians to play an active part in the democratic system. Chapter sixfocuses on programs that bring about social change. The final chaptersummarizes current trends in adult education and focuses on future directionsof citizenship education. A list of 269 references is included. This interest was given further impetus by meetings held at Pugwash, Canada in 1970, Nordborg, Denmark in 1972, Nairobi, Kenya in 1975, Oxford, England in 1987, Rome, Italy and Aachen, West Germany in 1988. A number of international organizations, among those Unesco, the Interna- tional Bureau of Education, the International Congress of University Adult Education, thc European Bureau of Adult Education, O.E.C.D., the (now defunct) European Centre for Leisure and Education, the Council of Europe, and the Inter- national Council for Adult Education have contributed their share. A grow ir g number of universities in all five continents established courses in comparative adult education. Many other unkersities encourage students to deal with comparative study or with the study of adult education abroad in major papers and theses. Tne literature in this area has increased considerably since the early 1960s both in support and as a result of this university activity. A number of valuable bibliographies were published, cataloguing the growing wealth of materials available ;n a number of languages. Most of the literature available on adult education in various countries can still be found primarily in articles scatteled throughout adult education and social science journals.Until a few years ago there was no commercial publisher enticing researchers to submit manuscripts of monographs dealing with compara- tive and case studies of adult education in various countries, even though the need for such a publishing venture was stressed at a number of international meetings. It was with the intent to provide such service to the discipline and the field of adult education that the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of British Columbia, in cooperation with the International Council for Adult Education, decided in 1977 to publish a series of Monographs on Comparative and Area Studies in Adult Education, In 1984 a major English publishing house in the field of education, Croom Helm, decided to establish a now series, the Croom Helm Series in International Adult Educaticn. Dr. Peter Jarvis of the University of Surrey, an internationally recognized scholar and noted promoter of publishing in inteinatimal adult education, was appointed editor of this new series. A number of volumes have besh published in this series since 1984 and have enriched the literature in this important field. The series has been taken over by Routlidge and is now published as International Perspectives on .k (lull and Continuing Education. Wc are pleased to bring out the sixteenth volume in our series of monographs, Citizenship and the Adult Education Movement in Canada,by the well known Canadian historian of rJult education, Gordon Selman.Certain innovative features of Canadian adult education, notably the National Farm Radio Firm and the Antigonish Movement, have had a significant impact on adult education practice abroad. All were in the realm of broadly defined citizenship education. Today, education for responsible citizenship is morc crucial thanever before. Gordon Selman, through his insigUtful analysis, brings to us the story of the trials and tribulations of this important part of adult education as it evolved in Canada, highlights tne contribution it made to the Canadian society, and askssome searching questions about the current state and the future of adult education.
