Len was a Level 3 Scoretable official from Logan and previously from Victoria Point, Southern Districts and Bendigo. With an unbelievable commitment and love for the game, Len was known at all levels – from domestic, to A grade, to Vets to National Leagues. Why was Len so well known? Was it because he would sit at a tournament all day every day, or was it because his voice could be heard throughout the stadium, or was it because he showed newbies how to complete a scoresheet, or was it because he had an endless supply of lollies, or was it because he remembered everyone’s names or was it because he was the first person to welcome you into the stadium and the last person to say goodnight on his way home? Actually for all of the above! Len is survived by his wife Margaret, two sons, one daughter and eight grand- children. His family, basketball and bowls were his life and he loved each with an amazing passion. A larger than life memory was when Len attended a recent WNBL game, with his health deteriorating, friends took in him a wheelchair to support his beloved Logan girls. He was wheeled around the court and waved to all – we shall never forget his smile on this day! It was a grand farewell and an opportunity for his friends to farewell him at the stadium! RIP Lenny Hamilton – your legacy to the game shall never be forgotten. Now – who has a mint? As the only Queensland representative to assist with score table duties, I anticipated an exciting week of basket- ball. I arrived there on Friday the 9th of April, had a good nights sleep in very beautiful surroundings at the Avoca Palm Resort, overlooking Avoca beach and was ready for a busy week. On the first day of com- petition I was the shot clock operator for four games. Avoca Beach, Terrigal. An excerpt from my journal reads: “Yesterday the first day at Nationals was exhausting. We were at the stadium from 8am until 1030pm. Photo courtesy of Moana. I scored four games. It was a big learning day because of the differences in the way we do things at home. During my third game we had two overtimes and I had to work with a faulty game clock, however, I am pleased because I did an excellent job regardless of the problems with the clock.” With two weeks notice I prepared my- Every game I was assigned to was an honour and privilege, and I was grateful that I was rostered to self for an ad- many of the Queensland team’s games, which included both Queensland North and South boys and venture of new girls teams. I scored 29 games during the seven days of competition, with the highlight of being chosen experiences as to score the girls final. It was Victoria Metro versus Queensland South girls. Victoria Metro won by 1 I journeyed to score for the point. U18 National The boy’s final was NSW Metro versus Victoria Metro. NSW Metro won with a three point shot suc- Champion- cessfully made in the final seconds of the game. Comments made after the finals were that they were the best finals for both girls and boys games at U18 Championships for many years. On the day I returned to Queensland I was filled with a deeper appreciation for my experience in Terri- gal and the many friends I had met. I was happy to have contributed to a very successful tournament. Have you ever thought of doing something a bit different for your holidays? Early this year, I was asked if I’d be interested in assisting with a new concept for a basketball tournament to be held in Adelaide just after Easter. As I hadn’t been to Adelaide for about 15 years and I had friends and relatives there, I thought I’d take on the challenge of something new and revisit the place in which I spent my student days. The new concept was the Foot Locker Elite Classic Basketball High Stakes Hoops – aka ECB! This tournament had 8 teams which the various owners assembled from ABA, NBL, Ex-NBL, College players, and other overseas players who were drafted to play in this tournament which had some $250,000 in prize money on offer. The rules had been modified to include no possession arrow, 4 time-outs per half which comprised two full and two twenty sec time -outs; there was also a three minute Game Breaker period for each team per half where three pointers were worth four points. Needless to say the teams which played some defence as well as made their outside shots in their Game Breaker periods were the ones who progressed through the tournament. The Scoretable Chairpersons had an extra job keeping tabs of these Game Breaker periods which were indicated by turning the scoreboard lights on and off at the start and finish! There were Queensland players in all of the teams which made it more interesting for me, with the Reef team being coached by well-known Brisbane identities Dale Ryan and Rob Scheibner and the Rays team with Blaze guard Adam Gibson, taking home the winners cheque. As the game times for this new event were dictated by TV programming (so not always very worker-friendly), the spectators were pretty few and more between in the 7,000+ stadium. However, it was great that basketball was back on free-to-air television and the games were fun to watch and were of a good standard considering the teams had just been brought together without time to train. Some overseas players literally got off the plane and went straight to the stadium for their first game! It was also interesting to see retired NBL players like Cal Bruton, Tony Ronaldson, John Rillie doing some commentary work and others like Brett Maher returning to play, much to the delight of his Adelaide fans.
