Jan 07, Reader rated it really liked it Shelves: not-a-straight-white-male-authorfemale-writers. I loved this book. The quality of the photos was fantastic and the book's design is neat and polished. However, I do wish that this had spanned over a longer time period than just It also would have been nice to have some captions saying where the photos were taken and who the people in them were. Also, Terry Richardson, the photographer, appeared in far too many of the photos. Some of them didn't even have Lady Gaga in them at all—it would either be him standing by himself or with someone I loved this book. I get that they might have found it cute to include the photographer in a few of the pictures, but towards the Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson half of the book, it got really obnoxious. I bought this book to see photos of Gaga and the people who are Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson around her; Richardson's job was to capture these moments, not to constantly insert himself in them. His presence should only be felt behind the camera—that's what a true photographer does. Despite that issue, I really enjoyed looking at these pictures and I definitely treasure this book. Terry Richardson spent the best part of a year with Lady Gaga on her Monster Ball Tour and captured everything in that time; the concerts, Lady Gaga working on her Born This Way album, various music award shows and her gay rights speech in Washington. So looking at the book with that in mind I'm pleased. When I say candid, I mean candid - no makeup or wigs, when she's brushing her teeth and hooked up to a IV drip. The photos don't appear to have been retouched either - on one photo you can see that Lady Gaga's fake tan is a bit streaky and on other pics her lipstick is smudged. What could have made this book better would be if Terry had included some notes to accompany the photos; loads of the pics show Lady Gaga stood next to unfamiliar faces, so those photos have no impact on me. She is crying in several photos. Happy tears? Was she unwell? One photo shows her onstage with a girl talking into a microphone. Who is the girl? What was she talking about? The comparisons to Madonna's Sex are inevitable. Sex though still remains more potent, creative, and, frankly, interesting. They both adopt sex as the subject, but they each approach it differently. We're able to see Gaga in her natural setting. We're able to see her at her most intimate and her most vulnerable. In a way it's unsettling - this global superstar of a woman who has an amount fame that isn't comprehendible cries. She does yoga in underwear you can just barely see through. She dyes her hair.
