Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Twins history began in 1961 when Washington Senators president Calvin Griffith made the historic decision to move his family’s team to the Midwest, settling on the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota. The new team was named after the state’s famous Twin Cities and began their inaugual season with a talented roster featuring Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Camilo Pascual, and Jim Lemon. Homegrown talents Jim Kaat, Zoilo Versalles, Jimmie Hall, and Tony Oliva combined with the Twins already potent nucleus to make the team a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s.

  • Determining the Value of a Baseball Player
the Valu a Samuel Kaufman and Matthew Tennenhouse Samuel Kaufman Matthew Tennenhouse lllinois Mathematics and Science Academy: lllinois Mathematics and Science Academy: Junior (11) Junior (11) 61112012 Samuel Kaufman and Matthew Tennenhouse June 1,2012 Baseball is a game of numbers, and there are many factors that impact how much an individual player contributes to his team's success. Using various statistical databases such as Lahman's Baseball Database (Lahman, 2011) and FanGraphs' publicly available resources, we compiled data and manipulated it to form an overall formula to determine the value of a player for his individual team. To analyze the data, we researched formulas to determine an individual player's hitting, fielding, and pitching production during games. We examined statistics such as hits, walks, and innings played to establish how many runs each player added to their teams' total runs scored, and then used that value to figure how they performed relative to other players. Using these values, we utilized the Pythagorean Expected Wins formula to calculate a coefficient reflecting the number of runs each team in the Major Leagues scored per win. Using our statistic, baseball teams would be able to compare the impact of their players on the team when evaluating talent and determining salary. Our investigation's original focusing question was "How much is an individual player worth to his team?" Over the course of the year, we modified our focusing question to: "What impact does each individual player have on his team's performance over the course of a season?" Though both ask very similar questions, there are significant differences between them.

  • City Officials Covering All Bases at Ballpark This Summer
May 25, 2021 Media Contact: Kenneth Cummings (731) 499-1142 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Officials Covering All Bases at Ballpark this Summer Jackson is ready to knock it out of the park JACKSON, Tenn. – With the City of Jackson issuing a nationwide Request for Proposals for the future use of the Ballpark at Jackson, the Ballpark is entering into a new and promising era. “We are very excited,” Mayor Scott Conger says when asked about the future of the Ballpark. “This Stadium is a treasured asset of this City, and, with its prime location right off I- 40, we are very excited to see The Stadium 2.0.” Opened in 1998 and situated in a beautiful location alongside the Interstate, the Ballpark catches the attention of all who pass by it. Says Mayor Conger, “The Ballpark announces to the world: ‘We are in Jackson.’ It’s a tremendous resource built by our community for our community, and it’s time for it to live up to its full potential.” The Stadium most recently was under a license and use agreement with the owner of the Jackson Generals. But that agreement required the team continue to be part of minor league baseball. The Generals lost that status when Major League Baseball restructured its minor league system earlier this year and did not invite the Generals to be part of the new system – making the Generals the only team in the former Southern League not to receive such an invitation. This loss of affiliation put the Generals’ owner in material breach of its license agreement with the City.

This effort was realized through modernization projects by President Porfirio Díaz, a Oaxacan, that encouraged the building of infrastructure to boost foreign investment while bandwagoning foreign culture. Perceived as civilized and ultra-modern, baseball was adopted by Oaxacan elites to counter- balance the embarrassment they had of their own indigenous population considered backwards. Baseball served primarily an exclusionary function but during the Revolution mass participation began to be seen as a way to reform and socialize the Indian masses. The professional game that emerged in México was powerful but didn’t reach Oaxaca until the 1990s, the local team owned by one of México’s great business moguls. The game abounds with modern and consumerist symbolism but remains tied to Mesoamerican spirituality and mysticism. The stadium itself serves as an international spectacle of baseball exoticisms yet represents a negotiation with the rooted local.
