Australian Racing Fact Book A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2000 - 2001 Published by the Australian Racing Board December 2001 1 Although every effort has been made to ensure the information provided in the Australian Racing Fact Book, this publication may contain inaccuracies or typographical errors. The Australian Racing Board assumes no responsibility for any such inaccuracies, errors or omissions in this publication or in other documents referred to within the publication. We would appreciate being notified of any errors that are discovered. 2 FForewordoreword The Australian Racing Board is pleased to introduce the third edition of The Australian Racing Fact Book, our annual reference guide to the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. In a few years we will celebrate the bicentenary of racing in Australia. In the almost 200 years since its beginnings, a three day meeting held in Hyde Park in 1810, Australian racing has become not only one of this nation's best loved sports but also a major component of the economy. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. Our intention in producing the Fact Book is to meet this demand by assembling a range of useful facts and figures as a handy guide to any person seeking information on major aspects of the industry.

  • SUNSPEED SUMMER 2016 Thoroughbred Breeders WA Contents the Website for All Your Breeding Presidents Report
SUNSPEED WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER RACING & BREEDING MAGAZINE SUMMER 2016 INSIDE: SUPER SATURDAY FIRST SEASON SIRES WESTSPEED PLATINUM GROUP & LISTED RACEWINNERS YEARLING SALE EDITION Thoroughbred Breeders WA MAN BOOKER Man Booker winning the WA Guineas You may remember the article that was written back in the Summer edition of Sunspeed in 2015 where and un-named 2 year old Bay Gelding by the Stallion Discorsi out of the Mare Morine (Danetime) featured. We emphasised the pressure his trainer Danny Morton would be under come race day when that finally came about as this particular gelding was owned by no less than 23 females and how they were all very excited about their new purchase. He was bred by Ellie Giles of Korilya Stud and was purchased by Danny Morton at the 2014 Magic Millions Perth Winter Sale for $25,000. Danny decided to try something new and offered the horse for lady owners only. The idea was well received with 23 female owners taking shares, some of them first time owners and eventually he was named MAN BOOKER. The rest is history they say after Man Booker won his first three race starts before heading off for a spell with the intention to then aim him at the Ascot Summer Carnival. He returned in great order and raced very well without a whole lot of luck at his next three starts finishing fifth, fourth and second in the lead ups to the WA Guineas (his main target). With a large crowd of supporters on hand it was all about the girls and Man Booker on Super Saturday with Man Booker gutsing out another tough run when he deservedly won the $500,000 Group 2 WA Guineas over 1600m.

13TH EDITION / SEPTEMBER 2014 GAI’S GAZETTE Springing in the Rain... Cover title: Amanda Wood GAI’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Lea Stracey GAZETTE CONTRIBUTORS Gai Waterhouse Rob Waterhouse s I write, the sky is grey and a Zeb Armstrong constant drizzle of rain waters the Lea Stracey gardens outside. Amanda Wood’s Madison Whant cover photo very appropriately re- Claudia Miller Afers to the almost biblical amount of rain that Petrea Vela Joe Callan has fallen over August. It is proof, however, that preparation of the horses at Gai Water- house Racing occurs come rain, hail or shine. GRAPHIC DESIGN & laYOUT Whilst there is nothing better than soaking rains for gardens, the rain is also falling on our Madison Whant racetracks, sometimes making race day results [email protected] somewhat unpredicatable. Nothing is ever perfect, and by the time you are reading this CHIEf photogrAPHER latest edition, perhaps the rain has stopped, but I do hope there is less of it during the Bradley Photographers coming Spring Carnival of racing…. www.bradleyphotos.com.au As Petrea Vela mentions in her article this month, the foaling has begun and the anticipation of the next champions to be born is being realized. A year hence, after we owners have purchased our yearlings, they have Editorial PhotogrAPHER to be named in order to be registered in the Australian Stud Book. This is where the fun Amanda Wood begins. Need for Steed Aus. There are two choices when naming a horse. One can choose a name randomly www.needforsteed.com.au because one likes it, or one can consider the sire and dam’s names and choose a name that refers to or connects with the mating.
