The following are direct extracts from "It Happened Here" by Stanley Tiquet. Any explanatory notes are the editor's and in italics. THE GREAT ATTACK A Night of Fire On the afternoon of Saturday, September 7th 1940, the massed forces of the Luftwaffe struck at London. They came just after 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The day was warm and sunny; the sky blue. Many people were out of doors. A monstrous monotonous droning proclaimed the coming of the bombers. They swept on south of the Borough. By 6 o'clock the skies were empty. But all Thameside blazed. Wanstead and Woodford, so far immune, awaited the night. Soon after 8 o'clock the enemy struck again, the airmen flame-guided to their target of the afternoon-;the docks and the small homes of the East End. As the sun began to sink, the vast expanse of the red glow in the sky to west and southwest sent a chill to the heart. It seemed that all London was burning. And this time, the enemy, before his roaring procession had ended at 4.30 a.m., had set fires blazing in Wanstead and Woodford and some of our neighbours were dead or lay buried beneath the ruins of their shattered homes. Civil Defence faced its first real test and, without previous experience to guide it, came creditably through the ordeal. It dealt not only with local incidents, but also sent reinforcing parties to East Ham, West Ham and Poplar. Wanstead High Street area suffered chiefly on that first niqht, and Post 35 was heavily involved.

  • Barking Riverside Extension – Factsheet 1 Project Overview
Barking Riverside Extension – factsheet 1 Project overview Introduction Barking Riverside is the largest housing development in east London, with planning permission for up to 10,800 new homes, as well as healthcare, shopping, community and leisure facilities. However, the London Riverside Opportunity Area Planning Framework (OAPF), a spatial planning document covering this area including Barking Riverside1, identifies that a package of transport measures are required to facilitate the development of Barking Riverside, and the wider London Riverside Opportunity Area. The Barking Riverside Extension, a 4km extension (1.5km of new track) of the existing London Overground Gospel Oak to Barking line, is the primary component of a package of transport measures to unlock development at Barking Riverside. Without a new operational rail link in place, the development potential of the Barking Riverside site cannot not be fully realised, as no more than 4,000 homes can be occupied. This project aims to deliver the Barking Riverside Extension of the London Overground Gospel Oak to Barking line. The project will be complemented by a series of transport improvements measures led by Barking Riverside Limited and Transport for London, including bus network enhancements and the creation of a street network that promotes walking and cycling. Further information about the London Riverside Opportunity Area and the Barking Riverside development proposals, is presented in Barking Riverside Extension factsheet 3. The Barking Riverside Extension is proposed to be funded and financed by a variety of sources, including through money allocated in the TfL Business Plan and contributions from the developers of the Barking Riverside site.

  • Essex Fire Museum
Information File No1. ESSEX FIRE MUSEUM . The Fire Service in Wartime Essex. Before 1937 there were more than 60 Fire Brigades in the County of Essex. The standard of these brigades varied widely, from the professional ‘Metropolitan’ brigades such as Walthamstow, Ilford, Leytonstone, Barking and Dagenham and the large towns such as Colchester, down to the tiny rural brigades of villages like Finchingfield, Mersea Island and Thaxted. The Air Raid Precautions Act of 1937 required all local authorities from Parishes to County Councils to make provision for properly organised Fire Brigades for their areas and for the formation of a Government sponsored Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) attached to the local authority brigades. New or more modern fire appliances were purchased by many of the smaller brigades and recruiting for the AFS began in 1938. Equipment for the AFS was provided by the Government, this included uniforms, pumps, ladders, hoses and branches. What was not included was the provision for vehicles to tow the many trailer pumps issued and this resulted in many fire brigades acquiring an amazing variety of cars and lorries for conversion into towing vehicles and fire appliances. Rayleigh’s Auxiliary Fire Service in 1939 Initial training for the auxiliaries varied greatly from brigade to brigade until a training manual was produced in 1939 by the Home Office with the intention of standardising training. Women were recruited to operate the fire control rooms, to be administrative staff, station cooks and also to drive both cars and supply lorries. They were often in the thick of the action. The so called ‘Phoney War’ period from autumn 1939 into the early part of 1940 did not leave the fire fighters of Essex with nothing to do.
