Year 8 Debating Excursion

On Friday Harry H, Will B and I went to University with Ms Waters to watch the Hume Barber Year 12 State Debating Finals with Manly Selective competing against Sydney Boys.

When we arrived we were impressed by the old traditional style of Sydney University. We went in to The Great Hall to see the debate. It was a very tough debate between the two teams and I was very impressed with the standard of the speeches as the teams had had only one hour to prepare.

The topic was "We should stop reporting statements made by perpetrators of terrorist attacks". Both teams had very strong opinions and arguments and it was a very interesting to experience such a high quality debate. The debate was so close that the adjudicators were divided – the first split decision in 15 years. Sydney Boys were declared winners.

At the end of the day I was glad to have seen Sydney University (it reminded me of Hogwarts), and I saw some great skills and techniques to use in debating in the future.

Over the last couple of months the Under 15 Rugby Union team have continued on their winning way from successful 2011. After going through undefeated in the 2011 Peninsula Cup, they have again been effectively accumulating wins in the NSW state-wide Buchan Shield for Under 15s.

On 24 May they attended Rugby Gala Day at Freshwater Campus.

In their first game they accounted for Davidson HS to the tune of 45 - 0 (what a way to blow the cobwebs out). Try scorers - Jamie Perry 2, and one each to Clint Maguire, Max Bertock, Luke Milham, Jasper Damp and Lachlan Rose. Captain Daniel England kicked four conversions.

Their second game was against a combined team from the Northern Beaches Secondary College (Balgowlah Boys, Cromer and Manly Selective schools). This contest was always going to be a more difficult assignment. Pittwater showed great skill, composure and determination to lead 7 – 0 at halftime. Captain Daniel England and forwards leader Luke Milham led by example, as we weathered the opponents many promising raids. Despite losing the penalty count convincingly, our boys proved just too good finally putting the game out of reach with a smart try and goals to Daniel. The final score 17 – 0. This victory would allow Pittwater to progress into the extended draw of the Buchan Shield Knock Out as the No. 1 team from the Northern Beaches.

The next opponent, Asquith Boys, unfortunately had to forfeit.

Last Friday 27 July we played the No. 2 team from the Hunter Region, Whitebridge HS, on the Pittwater oval. The winner of this game would then progress through to the final 8 (Quarter Finals) of the State knockout. The Pittwater boys were absolutely clinical in their resounding victory 51-0. Throughout the game we had the ascendency in pretty much all departments. Credit should go to the Whitebridge team for the way they played the game, right up to the final whistle. Our best included the usual suspects :- Daniel England, Luke Milham, Lachlan Rose, John Ferguson, Clint Maguire, Jamie Perry, Trenton Crosse and Jasper Damp. The contribution from the rest of the players cannot be understated. Connor Bradshaw and Mason Binge, both made the most of their opportunities. The whole teams’ commitment, enthusiasm and courage should be commended. Just getting through some of our physical training runs can be an accomplishment.

Over the next two weeks, the team will train hard with John Milham (parent and guest coach) and myself, and prepare for our next opponent (Endeavour Sports HS from the “Shire”). The winner will progress to the semi finals of this prestigious competition.

The final eight remaining teams makes interesting reading and puts the Pittwater HS efforts into some perspective. Eight teams, five of which are specialist Sports High Schools, another being a multi high school college, another comprehensive high school and Pittwater.

Thanks to John Milham and other parents, for their continued support.

Manly/ North Schools Champions

After placing equal fifth in the state-wide Buckley Shield last year, the PHS under 15 team entered the all schools carnival full of confidence. In our first game we accounted for St Pauls fairly emphatically 16-4 on the back of tries to Clinton Maguire, Sam Groom and Lachlan Rose. We then played our “grand final” (knowing Cromer were going to be tough after both teams had a win apiece last year against each other, with only two points separating them on both occasions) against Cromer High where we won 6-4 in another classic.

Talented lock forward Jamie Perry made an uncharacteristic error in the play the ball which led to a Cromer try only to see him save our tournament with a diving cover tackle, at full stretch in copybook fashion, to bring a runaway attacker down a metre from the line. Captain and most instrumental player Daniel England at five-eighth then sealed the victory by converting his own try after some real razzle dazzle on the last play in the previous set of six that forced a line dropout to Cromer, and a repeat set for us.

Next pool game saw us defeat a depleted but gallant Narrabeen Sports 30-4 which put us in the final against surprise packets The Forest High. In this game PHS really clicked and put on a brilliant display of solid defence and blistering attack. One particular move involving a decoy runner in the backline, created havoc on each occasion attempted and led to two tries. Zac Purll opened the scoring with a beautiful whole run off a Lachlan Rose pass before crosses by fullback Connor Bradshaw, Daniel England twice and Jamie Perry completed the rout.

This was a victory to be savoured as to the best of my knowledge, no PHS team has won this tournament before, and certainly not in the past two decades. It qualified us for the finals where the winners of each NSW district are invited to battle to be the best in the state.

The Victorious Under 15 team- Manly/ Norths All Schools Champions Back L to R: Mr Dailhou, Stefan Ubiparovic, Callum Watts, Max Bertock, Clint Maguire, Rob Fabro, Connor Bradshaw, Lachie Rose, Josh Wandl, Tyler Stowe, Jamie Perry, Tim Kovacs, Zac Purll, Tommy Bowden Front L to R:,Jasper Damp, Ben Sedgwick, John Ferguson, Sam Groom, Daniel England (Captain), Dylan Ambrosius, Nick Fretton

The Under 13 team also entered the All Schools carnival and expected to be competitive after defeating Barrenjoey High and narrowly losing to Cromer and Narrabeen Sports in the Jamie Lyon Cup last term. Unfortunately we failed to reproduce that form and had disappointing losses to Barrenjoey (14-0), The Forest (26-0) and Balgowlah (20-10) where we showed some form through tries to hooker Adam French and centre Luke Trbojevic.

Coach Mr Tesoriero nominated Adam and Luke our best alongside classy halfback Patty Gililland, five- eighth Brendan Murphy, prop Marcus Larosa and centre Lachlan Creagh.
