WASA /WSSDA/ WASBO Legislative Conference January 31–February 1, 2016 WELCOME
Welcome to the 2016 Legislative Conference and thank you for your participation!
There is much for us to be attentive to as this year’s legislative session is getting underway. This conference provides us with an opportunity to hear from legislative leaders and policy makers who will update us on the education funding and policy landscape. As you have come to expect, WASA and WSSDA’s government relations staff will discuss this year’s Hot Topics to guide you as you meet with local legislators during Monday’s “Day on the Hill.” Sunday night provides us with a chance to meet in caucuses prior to networking with colleagues and legislators at our annual reception.
Each of you has an essential role in the legislative dialogue. As elected school directors, school administrators, and school business officials, you have your hands on the pulse of the community and are the experts on education issues. You are an essential part of shaping the fnal outcomes of the legislative session!
Compensation and levy reform are critical issues this session and form the cornerstone of our associations’ respective platforms. You will have an opportunity to hear from the three executive directors about these topics. Of course, how we fund districts is not the only issue on the table. School districts continue to be battered with changes in programs and expectations every year. This session will be no exception.
There has never been a more important time to show our support for our public schools. The state’s paramount duty is clear: to amply fund basic education for every student in the state. The Washington Supreme Court has reaffirmed that constitutional mandate and we, as educators, must capitalize on this tremendous opportunity to advocate for sufficient enhancements to basic education.
Your engagement is essential to our success—all on behalf of the children of Washington State. Thank you for joining us this year.
Frank Hewins, Ed.D. Superintendent, Franklin Pierce School District President, WASA
Chris Nation School Director, Marysville School District President, WSSDA
Jennifer Farmer, CSBA Director of Business Services, Everett School District President, WASBO WELCOME
