Signed: iv Abstract Background The cinema industry may be showing signs of growth since having to contend with increased competition over the last number of decades from alternate offerings such as radio, TV, computer games & Pay TV (Silver and Mc Donnell 2007). The apparent global box office decline in the last decade had been attributed to a number of factors including cyclical poor movie offerings, total costs associated with going to the cinema from admission price and snacks to parking, failure of new screen technologies to boost box office revenue and the emergence of alternative viewing methods (Silver and Mc Donnell 2007). -

Cedar Point Debuts Biggest Investment Ever
SPOTLIGHT: Hoffman's reborn as Huck Finn's Playland Pages 26 TM & ©2015 Amusement Today, Inc. August 2015 | Vol. 19 • Issue 5 www.amusementtoday.com Cedar Point debuts biggest investment ever AT: Tim Baldwin [email protected] SANDUSKY, Ohio — Ce- dar Point no longer releases investment figures, but the re- sort has revealed that the Ho- tel Breakers makeover is the biggest investment the park has ever undertaken. With Top Thrill Dragster costing $25 million in 2003, that certainly speaks to what is on display for this season — and beyond. In addition to the new hotel grandeur, Cedar Point has also made new upgrades and ad- ditions in several areas of the park. Hotel Breakers dates back to 1905, a time when most guests coming to Cedar Point Cedar Fair recently completed its largest investment ever at the Cedar Point Resort. December 28, 2018 The Honorable Joseph Simons Chairman Federal Trade Commission 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20580 Dear Chairman Simons, Thank you for inviting public comment on the question of whether U.S. antitrust agencies should publish new vertical merger guidelines, and how those guidelines should address competitive harms, transaction-related efficiencies, and behavioral remedies. We submit these comments on behalf of the Writers Guild of America West (“WGAW”), a labor organization representing more than 10,000 professional writers of motion pictures, television, radio, and Internet programming, including news and documentaries. Our members and the members of our affiliate, Writers Guild of America East (jointly, “WGA”) create nearly all of the scripted entertainment viewed in theaters and on television today as well as most of the original scripted series now offered by online video distributors (“OVDs”) such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Crackle, and more. The Non-Horizontal Merger Guidelines (“Guidelines”), originally issued in 1984,1 are the governing document of U.S. vertical antitrust enforcement. They rely, however, upon outdated economic theories that not only fail to promote and protect competition, but, in some cases, obstruct appropriate antitrust enforcement. Large vertical mergers in key industries have caused harm to consumers and failed to deliver on their promised innovations, efficiencies, and public benefits. The current Guidelines’ bias toward false negatives, or non-findings of harm, enables incumbents to consolidate market power and undermine competition. Recent vertical mergers in the telecommunications and entertainment industries illustrate the deficiencies of the current regulatory regime and provide evidence of the need for new guidelines. -

When Victims Rule
1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media. -
