Bristol Sycamore HR.14

Named for its resemblance to the sycamore seed pod, the Bristol 171 was one of the important pioneer helicopters. It was developed by a design team led by Raoul Hafner. The main rotor was fully articulated and had wooden blades tapering in chord and thickness from near the root to the tip of the blade. The Alvis engine was mounted horizontally under the rotor. Although the first prototype was flown in 1947, the first Sycamore was not delivered until 1951. Various versions including SAR, anti-submarine and anti-insurgence were produced until 1959. A total of 178 Sycamores in all versions were produced for Britain, Australia (15), West Germany (50), and the Belgian Air Force (3). The Sycamore was reliable and tough even in harsh environ- ments. Many could still be seen in service in the 1970s. This kit includes markings for six British aircraft in a wide variety of colors. Also included is one Royal Australian Navy Sycamore.
